Why do MMO gamers refer being level capped as "endgame"?

because it needs a name ... and "endgame" is convenient.

Does it make a difference if it is called something else? The game is the same.

That sounds even sillier though, makes it sound like activities at a Senior Center. Wooooo, shuffleboard.

I've never been a fan of the usage of "endgame" in MMO's.

What's typically referred to as endgame in MMO's is actualy where the main body of the gameplay lays, not the final chapter or last moves of the game.

Middlegame (or main body/meat of the game) is more accurate IMO.

The Opening = Levelling ones character/learning the games mechanics

Middlegame = Undertaking level cap content

Endgame = There is no real endgame, as long as new content is being produced, you're just in the middlegame.

    or

Endgame = When you're over playing the game anymore... /endgame

Any other thoughts on this, please share?

Why?  It is the historical vernacular of the industry.  You might not like the term but it exists.  Doesn't matter if anyone doesn't like it.   For me, it is a perfectly good term for that period in an mmorpg and therefore useful for communicating information.   Would you rather call it Taco Salad?

Exactly this^. What does it matter what its called? We all understand what it means which is the point of it being labeled. Whether its called end game, Elder game, or Taco Salad. If we all understand what it is referring to then what is the need to discuss why its called a certain term. It is what it is. And it's not like it doesn't make sense either.

The Opening as Rhinotones said is when you're first starting the game. The Middle game is after you got your bearings and there's no more help dialogues popping up at you every minute and you got the hang of the game. End game is when you're at max level and you just play the game however you wish to, whether its just helping people still in the "opening" or "middle game" or pvping or raiding or fishing or socializing.

You've reached the end is not equal to there is nothing left to do or you've beaten the game. You reaching the end just means you're at the end, you still decide what you do in the game from that point.
