God, I hate games that sell Beta access as part of pre-ordering. Of course it's NC Soft, so I shouldn't be surprised. This is their M.O.

This is wrong. The most recent example is ESO. There's been no guaranteed beta for pre order, and in fact they've had many beta giveaways and friend keys.
Plenty of MMOs have released in the past 10 years without needing to sell preorders with the lure of beta access. It's nothing new, you're right, but it's also not something that sits right with me.

The reason you give beta access for preorder is because they already paid for the game. Those players do a far better job at beta-testing your product compared to the million of tourists that just want to check out the new game and say "game X is so much better" on all chat channels.
