Is Zenimax reaching Mega Server Max Capacity?

KnotwoodKnotwood Member CommonPosts: 1,103

I noticed that Imperial sales are going out of sale both Physical and Digitaly.  Could it be that Max Server Capacity is being reached.   Here are the two warning signs:

1. Warning sign one - On ESO's front website it states "Imperial Edition Selling Fast! Don't miss out, Get Early Access and reserve your  "DIGITAL" copy before its too late!"

2. Warning sign two - I Also have ben looking around the internet for the physical Edition and on every website it says "SOLD OUT"

How could it be possible that the DIGITAL Imperial edition would be to late to get,  Unless, the server capacity is reaching MAX capacity that the tech support have set for the Mega-Server!

After seeing FFXIV release and the capacity being oversold,  Could the same be happing here?

It's also possible that they do this to make the item hot, and when more are available soon, chances are they will sell even better.

    Marketing talk really...

They did state at the beginning that the Imperial Edition was limited to a certain number of copies.  This includes a limited number of digital copies.

'before it's too late' is a pretty standard marketing call to action, I'd imagine they're just trying to push sales pre-launch. Physical copies of the Imperial edition could well be in short supply though.

Just my opinion though. I'd imagine they're megaserver can handle it, let's hope so anyway!

Is there a way to find out how many sold?

The physical Imperial edition is sold-out world wide.  This is because there were a finite amount of them made (since they include a statue, physical art, boxes, etc.).

The statement:  "Don't miss out. Get Early Access and reserve your digital copy before it's too late."  Is a simple marketing play on words.

It is worded in such a way to make people think they're "running out" of copies (like you thought)...when in reality they are just saying "buy the imperial edition and get early access to the game, before the game releases and early access is no longer meaningful (i.e. before it's too late)".

TLDR:  Physical edition is in fact sold out due to a finite quantity of them.  The digital edition is being marketed to appear as if it can "sell out" when in reality it's just a marketing ploy to get people to buy.

Edit:  As for the FFXIV comment, they didn't go "over capacity" in sales.  The servers at launch deemed the game completely un-playable, so Square Enix disabled sales to keep people from buying the game and then not being able to play it.  They had immense problems with their website hosting, login servers, and game servers.  This has nothing to do with how many people could actually play the game.

ESO won't have any of these problems because it has been properly tested, whereas FFXIV was not.

I'm sure they have an ideal number on how many they want on the 5-day headstart, 3-day, and "launch" date to get some folks spread out too. So, if need be they can just stop selling the Imperial if they really think it would be an issue (I doubt that they will need to).

Sounds like marketing talk to me. There pushing sales before launch.

Never beleive a company that they run out of virtual goods. It's just not possible. Only marketing talk or artifical limits to increase purchases before release.

Unless their megaserver architecture is not scalable. But in that case they are doomed anyway. ;)

Just marketing rhetoric they are going to soak up as many sales as they can.

Do you honestly believe that if/when they sell out of Imperial editions that the game is capped capacity on the megaservers?

    Really?

Even though its called "mega server", its not just one machine, they have many machines all forming the mega server

I believe they can just add additional hardware if it reaches full capacity

They are certainly not going to run out of digital editions, that's purely marketing speak....

the collector's edition- a few retailers sold out, but many others are still selling it last I looked.

    Correct.

As for digital editions running out.  As some have stated it is impossible for virtual goods to run out, and in that sense they are right.  The keys however are released in finite numbers so that the sellers can keep track of how many have been sold across the various digital distribution partners.  When they say buy now before it's too late they are talking about the pre-order bonuses which have a limited window.  The actual retail keys will be replenished as an ongoing thing when supplies get to a certain level.  If on the other hand they do as Square Enix did and suspend sales, it will be because the server isn't handling things too well, and like square they will resume sales when that issue has been addressed, if indeed it ever arises.

One has to wonder why they have sent out all of the thousands of keys....just can't put my finger on why. Why would they want sooooo many people testing the game at once. Boggles the mind....

    Running out of digital copies...

    Welcome to false scarcity 101...

If they were really running out of server space they would stop sales of regular editions before collectors as they make more on collectors but put the same demand on the servers...

    Yep, pretty much.

Though I have no doubt that the game is selling very well, which makes me happy.

Neverwinter Online did the same thing, and guess what, they are still selling them now - a year later.

My SWTOR referral link for those wanting to give the game a try. (Newbies get a welcome package while returning players get a few account upgrades to help with their preferred status.)

Steam will, on rare occasion, run out of stock of a game that's been out for a long time and receives an unexpected boom in sales due to a price drop or some other event. It's happened to Empire: Total War, Unreal Tournament 3, and a few other games. The "out of stock" relates to the finite number of cd keys generated for the game.

It's stated on their web page that you can upgrade your copy on april 4th (date may be off) if you pre purchase the game and didn't get the deluxe edition.  The answer is no they won't "run out" of copies.

No, I do not agree that they are running out of server space. This is just plain marketing hype.

Here you can now purchase ESO 20% off:

This totally debunks any of your ideas above.

I particularly like the idea of a "megaserver" which is highly scalable reaching max capacity.

    Seriously.... :P

"Highly scalable" is subtly different from "Infinitely scalable".

It is quite possible that they could suspend sales for a while if they feel the initial rush might degrade the "game play experience" of players. That would allow the starting zones to empty out a bit before they let the next "wave" in.

Depending on their server software it could for all practical purposes be infinitely scalable. The first bottleneck would more likely be the available bandwidth, but even that can be solved by just adding more fiber to the datacenter diet.
