So basically what you are saying is that we can expect TES VI to be even less sandboxy without mods than Oblivion?
This is TES6... Everything from now on should be an expasion of this great online world.....
There currently is not a single person over at bethesda working on a single person version of the elder scrolls...
if they ever want to bring back a true single person version of TES again, they could make it a payed expansion of ESO...
if they want to add openworld sandbox, they can just add a new continent, that plays and feels totally sandbox...
Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)
As compared to what? $60 has been the standard box price for AAA mmos going back more than 10 years.
Forced, oh sorry "incentivised" cash shop purchases just to stay competetive
What exactly does one need to purchase in the cash shop "just to stay competitive"? A horse? I can get one in game that's better.
I actually think console sales will be severely hampered once people realise just how much cash it will cost to play this game.
It's gonna cost me exactly $48 to play this game. Pretty good deal. If i turns out good, i may pay monthly to continue, if not, then not. It's pretty much in line with every good MMO i've played.

Most of those Skyrim fans that are complaining bout ESO are not Elder Scroll fans in the first place. They just played and like Skyrim. Skyrim was the worst of the franchise to date, mind you I still loved that game, but they took a lot out of the free world you had in the other games for the casuals players. Yes they made a single player game casual so that you couldn't screw up the game.
ESO is a lot like elder scrolls and feels a lot like edler scrolls. Is it going to be as good as the single player game that is the number one game of the year every release? NO! But is it a damn good MMO with a Elder Scrolls theme? Yes!
I have played all the Elder Scrolls and love the single player games, this has nothing to do with my desire to play ESO in anyway. Totally different games.
My worry is did Skyrim kill the best single play franchise for RPG games out there?

If we can take a lesson from WoW is, there a lot more mediocre players than people who are good at games and like the "no pain, no gain" mentality. Skyrim sold 20 million copy because, as you said, it was the least TESish of the 5. And because the Lowest Common Denominator could play it as well. It's also the second (the first being ARENA) TES game I didn't bother finishing
Originally posted by xpiher Because they were expecting sky rim with friends, not a themepark or sandpark. The setting and lore have very little to do with. It has more to do with how much worse the combat is than Skyrim and the fact that its not nearly open world enough to even be considered a TES game. This doesn't mean the game isn't bad for what it offers, it just means that it doesn't live up to what people were expecting.
BTW, anyone that says "this game plays exactly like Skyrim" needs to tell me how you can lead target and hit a person in melee without "targeting" them first.
the combat in skyrim is terrible, what the hell are you talking about?
skyrim's combat is by far it's worse aspect IMHO. sure sneaking with a bow and one shotting everything is cool but that's basically all you do and not viable in the least for an mmo.
ESO's combat has much more going on, you have actual skills to use in combat other than just mashing left and right click.
i'm not going to say it has true aim targeting like skyrim because it doesn't but you don't have to "target" something before hitting it like you are proclaiming.
if you have multiple targets and want to hit a specific target, then yeah you have to target it.
you are right about one thing, some people are expecting skyrim online. a lot of what's in skyrim would not work in an mmo, like the combat.
people are just very unrealistic or just not very knowledgeable about how mmo's work. or maybe they just dont like mmo's and want to play another ES SP game.
i know a lot of people who are console gamers that refuse to touch any mmo, especially when it has a sub model.
there are actually lots of reasons why an ES fan might not want to play ESO and not all of it can be avoided/fixed.
I really enjoy playing Skyrim but I wouldn't call myself a hardcore Skyrim fan. I’ve also played all the Elder Scroll games before Skyrim.
I've watched the ESO videos and I know I would love the PVE portion but I have no plans of subscribing to the game. The only thing stopping me from playing this game is its apparent heavy focus on PVP, which I will not touch under any conditions. I know I don't have to enter the PVP portion but I have no intentions of helping to finance the troubles that accompany PVP and its crowd. I think ESO will eventually be forced to focus on Cyrodiil.
Anyway, I wish no ill will on the game. I definitely don’t hate ESO. Perhaps, Zenmax will find that mythical balance between PVE & PVP despite class balance changes, nerfs, min-maxers & elitist bad behavior and forum politicking. I just will spend my money on a game that better suits my play style.
So many =/= a few disgruntled people who wanted Skyrim online. I loved Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim and think ESO is a great and logical step forward for the franchise.
I told people if you go into it expecting Skyrim online you would be disappointed, it's not a SPRPG, its an MMO. You have to go into the game expecting an MMO.
Basically, it's not Skyrim fans that dislike the game, it's people who don't like MMO's that dislike it the most. Skyrim has nothing to do with it.
Currently Playing: ESO and FFXIV Have played: You name it If you mention rose tinted glasses, you better be referring to Mitch Hedberg.
Isn't the answer to that question rather obvious? It is a MMORPG at it's core, wrapped around a DAOC style end game, and not the multi-player version of the single player games that the fans were looking for.
But you had to know this already, slow news night I guess.
I was going to say something about how the original IP was not the true inspiration for this game, But since this post is here already, I guess I don't need to.
Skyrim for some was the pinnacle of achievement in the series and for some they could imagine the next title being even more superior.
That "some" must be people who aren't really very into RPGs. Skyrim was, by far, the most shallow and empty game in the series. And please don't bring up mods. Modded Skyrim is not the game that Bethesda sold, it's the game the fans made using the engine. And I'm not saying Skyrim is a bad game; it's an absolutely wonderful First Person Slasher. But from a company that once upon a time knew how to make great RPGs, it's more than a little disappointing.
ESO on the other hand appears to be shaping up to be a damn fine RPG.
Peace is a lie, there is only passion. Through passion, I gain strength. Through strength, I gain power. Through power, I gain victory. Through victory, my chains are broken. The Force shall free me.
I'm curious where you play a "hardcore" fan of Skyrim. I have 200+ hrs in, I've also got some trophies that only 1-2% of the Steam pop have. Is that hardcore? Because I LIKED what I saw in ESO. I liked it so much I had to stop playing it. I don't want to burn out. I picked a faction I had ZERO interest in playing, and I played.
You know what I saw? People running from point a to point b. Then doing a quest and point c. All straight lines. And the complaints about it.
You know what I did? I walked around. Opened many chests laying about (completely ignored by the idiots from a->b). Spoke to NPCs randomly (some talked or remarked funny quips, others did nothing). I also decided that one cliff I wanted to climb. I spent the day climbing it then taking a screenshot so I had it.
At the end of the day, it's a game. It's not a job, it's not a life, it's a way to pass time in a way enjoyable to you. If you ENJOY running as fast as you can and saying "HA! First!" well then good for you. I think most people who do that don't fully enjoy their games but I can see the appeal. But who are you going to show? You friends? Your guild? You gunna go to a bar, strut around, and think someone IRL is going to buy you a beer for your accomplishment? No. In fact, you'll probably be made fun of. It's a game. Enjoy it. When you don't enjoy it anymore move on to something else. Never forget that.
I don't know. I can only go by what friends have told me - ie: one just hates MMO's in general except GW1 and 2 and says that he thinks the graphics are crap compared to "real" ES games. Plus he'd never pay a subscription but that's another story.
Another friend was hoping for better RvR than GW2 but said she was disappointed in the results in ESO.
Personally, I didn't care for Skyrim that much. The combat has more depth in ESO, and I can farm all I want without worrying that a particular farming spot has already been "picked" and will only respawn in a few days. Plus, there are people to talk to. Or argue with. Whatever. I just thought Skyrim was kind of overrated.
Because it's not open world at all. WoW is more like TES than ESO is.
I tried exploring on the starter island, went around every corner hoping to find some hidden stuff or just a dungeon off the track - nothing. Forums said it would get better in later zones, but all i found was closed doors/entrances, which meant i would have to pick up a quest first somewhere i guess. So i quit.
ESO just made me wanna play the next TES. It was a tease. Same races/lore, but nothing else.
I gave it it's fair share of time and played it on multiple times but no for me (See I said me) it doesn't feel like an elder scrolls game.
The lore was twisted to add stuff that shouldn't have been in the game anyway (Daoc like pvp), faction locks, not really free to do anything/go anywhere since some stuff are locked until you get X quest, combat feels worse than the single player game which is not that outstanding to begin with, they changed the level system to an hybrid fake "free" skill ups tied with levels which was one of the reasons I love the series and I didn't like their decision on various other stuff like loot, melee weapon speed all the same etc etc
I may give it a try when or better say IF they add conjuration weapon spells and/or dark brotherhood maybe.

I LOVED Skyrim. I thought it was a wonderful single player game. Would I love to see Skyrim Online? Yes. Will I ever? Nope.
The simple reason I won't is because Skyrim was brought around the player. UO pre-trammel days (for those who don't know what that is, it is basically skyrim (Open PvP, killing people whenever, stealing, stealthing, etc) in an Ultima setting) we're some people's best times but the VAST majority of people hated it simply because they would get killed, camped, stolen from, etc. all the time. They tried everything you could do in Skyrim in an MMO and it did not work out too well. UO then created Trammel, a mirror place but without the stealing, killing, camping of other players. Honestly for a post WoW MMO it seems to capture the essence of Skyrim nicely while being an MMO at its core. To be honest you can try Skyrim in an MMO setting but it simply would not work because it was done before and failed.

It's simple really, they didn't want a MMO... they wanted a coop multiplayer Skyrim.
