Seeking a good economy in an MMO

ProxyCellProxyCell Member Posts: 3

I am a big economy nut with games like this. Think along the lines of EVE Online.

I love the idea of trading goods/services for money in the games.

There are quite a few MMORPG's that offer a great economy to make the game feel more like a living world rather than a hack and slash.  However they are not high profile games, which also means the 'AAA' feel is not there; which is entirly fine.  EvE online will be your largest and most polished game by far for a universe with a great economy.  There are some older games, like some Ultima Online shards that still have the economy feel that you are looking for.  Also, Ryzom; also an older game.  Wurm online is built by nothing but players, however it lacks the polish and feel of a great game.

So if you are looking for the #1 spot, I'd say go with EvE.

hmm, with eve, is it possible to fly from region to region, playing the differences in pricing?

I tried to signup for the free trial but it threw at error at me with two different browsers so I have contacted them for support now.

Is there anything else you can tell me about eve before i get the game?

Thanks for the tips, Wurm sounds pretty cool too

Yes, you can fly from region to region as prices will both differ from Region to region and distance from trade hubs. If you wish to haul your own goods you can train up in the specific ship line starting smaller industrial ships leading to extremely large haulers. If you just want to play the market there is a large range of 'Trade' skills for you to train. If you wish to manufacture you should look at the 'Production' skill line. Some urls below to give you an idea of what you wish to train. For me, EVE is one of the few MMOs that doesn't require you to enter combat to play.

I cannot in good conscience, let this slide. Eve in fact not only requires you to enter combat, but drags you into it, against your will, kicking and screaming. Every single place in eve, outside of being docked in a station, is free-for-all pvp, just with different consequences in different areas.

I'm not by any means saying this makes Eve a bad game, this aspect of the game is actually what makes the economy work as well as it does. Just don't lie to poor fellow, your always "in combat" in eve.

To find an intelligent person in a PUG is not that rare, but to find a PUG made up of "all" intelligent people is one of the rarest phenomenons in the known universe.

Achaea's economy revolves around the player-crafting market, and you can trade gold for credits from other players (credits are like a vanity shop currency).

Thanks to everybody for their suggestions, please keep them coming!

I may actually give those text-based ones a try. I'm pretty old and remember playing similar MUDs in the old days and things like Falcon's Honor :)

They really push for immersion and roleplay which is certainly my thing. I like being the travelling merchant sort of guy in these games so please keep going!

Well you might also like Imperian or Lusternia but my favorite is Achaea, it's the most developed + highest population. Also in Achaea there is an entire guild called the Grand Merchant Collective which accepts classes that have trade-skills. They generally roleplay being travelling merchants and lots of them own shops and stuff.

"Embracing the principles of mercantilism and diversity, the Grand Merchant Collective is a progressive House headquartered on the isle of Delos.

The strength of the Collective is a direct result of its diverse membership: merchants come from myriad backgrounds and economic stations, all possessing varying skills in the fields of trade and commerce. By expanding and sharing

that knowledge, members of the Collective assist their peers not only through the accumulation of individual fortunes, but by raising the House to a powerful economic force in the global arena. The Grand Merchant Collective propels those

with motivation and drive to a life of success. Through hard work and initiative, all who invest in the future of the House are rewarded with the opportunity to rise as an esteemed Master Merchant."
