The reason why DFUW is unpopular is that it caters to a very specific type of player, who MUST match all the criteria:
MUST work in a team - playing solo is not a realistic option.
MUST enjoy PvP (look at the map - it's built as a giant PvP arena). There is no escape from PvP.
MUST enjoy repetitive crafting / collecting to fit in with the team (chopping down many trees a day etc).
I used to really enjoy Darkfall when you could solo by living on the many isolated islands.
In DFUW, they removed all of them!
The day the islands come back, I will definitely return. However, I know this will never happen - I feel both sad and angry about that.
Soloing is completely viable in UW, its just harder to solo PvP because of the skill cap. Any skill cap system AV would have used would have made it harder to solo. Economically, there's actually more incentive to solo your way to riches then there is in teaming up with people, which is one of the reason why the game's economy is so messed up. Alone, I've gotten enough materials over the course of the year I've played to outright buy a player city when cities were still expensive. When I was grinding regularlly , I'd get over 500k in gold and resource every week and a half with normal MMORPG play time.
Soloing in DFUW is viable in the same way that crossing the road blindfolded during rush hour is viable. You can do it, but would you really want to?
This is what I hate about fanboys - they support or excuse all the faults in a game and so nothing gets changed and nothing improves.
The worst example of rabid fanboy-ism is for the game Eve Online, where fans are charged $100 per year per account and then the fanboys celebrate when CCP introduces rubbish DLC that they have to pay even more for.
Wha? I solo 90% of the time. And I have since I started, a few months after launch. I am not a great PvPer and I'm rarely surprised while solo PvEing or gathering in the open world.
I do think the PvP skill gap is pretty large due to how skill based the game is. If you put down a noob in WoW and a noob in DFUW in front of a good PvPer he will have much much less chance of winning in DFUW. Not saying it is good or bad it is just a fact.
I find your account very hard to believe because if you look at a map of the new Darkfall, there are no longer any isolated areas. All areas of the map are now between player-owned settlements.
Truth be told, one of the biggest problems with the game is the fact that solo-powering your wealth was too easy albeit time consuming. AV is now trying to fix this issue with the new systems they are putting in place.
WAYYYYY too late to try and fix it now. Almost all of the big clans have left the game and will not be coming back. They had a 4+ year window and blew it. I just hope another company takes over the concept someday.

Yup, I really liked the game but all the large guilds left. Playing an empty world is pointless. It was fun while it lasted.
As much as liked this game at launch I stopped playing after about 3 months, Resubbed 2months ago and I was astonished at the amount of people left in the game, About the same as 1 battlefield 4 server. FTP is the only way for this game and with the low population it's not worth a sub.
I disagree. I'm enjoying the game a lot and have no trouble at all finding pvp. Raid cities, hit popular spawns, go to dungeons, go to sea towers, do village reqs and possibly now go steal from levies. You'll find pvp.
I had come back to give the game another try about 4 months ago and my sub just ended. Do not intend to resub until I see some major combat changing patch notes, classes removed and population increase. Sadly I don't see but possibly the combat changes ever happening. Atleast I got to enjoy df 1. Cheers to the promising games on the horizon

Super, "arena" fighting.
What arena? These are all things you do in the game. This is playing the game. Stop hating on the game JUST to hate on the game. You don't play it, so you don't have an informed opinion on it. So why do you continue to post here?

Where have all the "good" shills gone?

Nobody is running around in groups less than 5 people these days so be warned.
I am sure what I said is different than the majority of this thread since I didn't read it.
The definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.
