I disagree with the OP. I think the best sandbox MMORPG this year should be Elite: Dangerous (providing David Braben gets the proceedural generation right and there is plenty of variety in that game's universe).
The main reason why Elite: Dangerous should beat ArcheAge is that ArcheAge is 3rd person perspective and seems too WoW-like. Elite: Dangerous is more high-tech: it's 1st person perspective and is 100% Oculus Rift compatible.
I was not aware that Elite: Dangerous was even a mmorpg? when did this happen?
I backed it instantly as i love the Elite games but not really been following it since so if you have any links about this now becoming a mmorpg that would be awesome
I guess you haven't heard about the recent changes to ArcheAge huh? Calling it a sandbox currently is a bit of a stretch.
Trion addressed that. Linking old info isn't cool.
Trion also acknowledged that there are issues with the Korean 1.0 with levels 50-55, which are considered themepark'ish.
And .. Trion said they didn't like what they saw and are working with XLGames to modify the game for the West, to ratain the original sandbox flavor.
Yeah, it sounds like Trion are trying very hard to re-model the game to western tastes. According to their new community manager:
"Some other information touched upon is “pre-launch packages” similar to founder packs we've seen in the past for other titles. Berman is also aware of the 1.0 patch situation, but can't say too much on the decisions of XLGames for their regions. Although he did state that Trion Worlds and XLGames will continue to aim for, “No Tricks, No Traps” regarding development as a whole. Regarding that, XlGames has already agreed to have racial quests grant experience and gear from the cash shop be less superior to crafted items."
So it sounds like the P2W stuff in the Cash Shop will still be the best in the game, just not as totally OP compared to crafted gear...
Who knows, given enough time, perhaps Trion can persuade XLGames to completely change their monetization scheme for AA in western markets ?
Um....he states that anything from the cash shop will not be as good as crafted items, at least that is how I understand it. Granted his use of "less superior" could be slightly misleading but I read that as "lower quality" instead of "superior but now by a smaller margin".
I have never seen so many ups and downs before reelase of an mmo. yet i still think it has potantial altough at some points AA looked as if it was dead on arrival.
There are not many sandbox games on the market specialy not "new" ones so i realy hope Trion gets good influance into the game here in the west. I defently will pay a sub for this and i realy hope you get that extra stuff so you dont have to dive into the cash shop or that it has pay to win / pay to enjoy aspects.
I have seen pvp clips and i must admit they looked delicious. Some things i hope wont be ingame like cars / wicked costumes that do not belong in a real medievel fantasy setting.

Let me get this straight.. you played less than 30 minutes, reached level 9 and decided to quit? Was this because you wasn't hand-held to every destination? You are the type of player I hope ArcheAge doesn't attract, an absolute waste of bandwidth.

Trion is already selling Tier 1 raid gear in Rift's cash shop, can't imagine that AA would be any different.
And what Tier gear are they up to now.?
I lost count. Relate it to selling WoW's Molten Core gear, Tear 1 in WoW, in 2014.
Hey anyone wanna buy these sweet purples in the cash-shop? Level 60 purples! If you pay enough the item level is 68!
.. Or someone can just get their own low level crap. =D
While Tier 2 was the top tier, Trion was selling Tier 1 in the cash shop. I'm guessing now that Tier 3 recently came out, Tier 2 gear will soon be available in the cash shop.
Not sure how you could lose count of three tiers... and NO it's not comparable to selling 9 year old WoW gear as you tried to imply, in many cases the Rift cash shop raid gear is only one step below BIS.
this is going to be the biggest best badass sandbox mmorpg in 2014. LOL
Can you beleive those AAA mmorpg here in the USA still use phasing technology in their whole world? instead of seamless world. its sooo 2008 phasing.
lol hilarious.
You should ask yourself this: How many Sandbox MMO we have in the western market?. and how many of them are actually a success?.
ArcheAge wont be an exception.
SWG was a success until the exodus, also referred to as the NGE. ArcheAge treated correctly for the western audience could quite easily be "an exception".

EVE kinda sucks though.
That should tell you something about sandboxes.
On topic, I saw some in-game footage of ArcheAge and I liked what I saw but I'm no fool to get on the hype train ^^
Once the game is released and all that is said is done, then I'll voice my opinion if its the best or the crappiest sandbox/sandpark/themepark/whatever.
Originally posted by DrunkWolf If i log into AA and i see NPCs with shinys above their heads for quest to deliver mail im going to log out right away and consider it NOT a sandbox.
I watched a video on youtube yesterday where NPCs had ! and ? above their heads, so no... it's not sandbox, probably just litterbox like the rest.

Because quests define if a game is sandbox or themepark right.
Leveling is themepark-ish, rest of the features are sandbox. That's why it's called sandpark. It's still pretty much the only AAA mmo with so many sandbox features.
From what I've seen in the russian beta youtube vids, this game looks to me like a full on themepark, granted it was only low level content.
Also I heard a few people fuss about the latest korean patch turning the game into even more of a themepark than it already is, don't ask me how, I didn't do any research.
Yeah think of the low level stuff up until about level 20 as your standard quest hub themepark game.. after that it opens up and brings in a ton of sandbox features.. It is still a mix of both at the end of the day.
As for the korean patch both the russian devs and trion have told XL games that is not they way they want to go.

Eve is boring and lame and to me is not even real sandbox. More like a niche MMORTS game. My intrest for ArcheAge has not changed since it was first announced. I will be there day 1.

I couldn't stomach the gameplay video, but the lyric theme was DESTROY!!! which peps can do, maybe in upcoming console / pc MMORPG crossovers. I'm into gaming music, and sadly, thought the soundtrack for Shadowbane stinks, from the trailer:

Erm, no they don't..
Some may not, some do.
You try to lump your own desires into everyone elses, which was your undoing.
You consider ArcheAge to be themepark (from earlier posts), others state why it has sandbox qualities, then you refute them and say, Nope themepark, I said so! Sandpark is a fair definition of ArcheAge, which is still light years ahead of other AAA games coming out.
A better response on your post would be to acknowledge that some want player driven worlds, some don't. But you indicated "they" don't wan't that. You just have to face up, that not everyone will see gaming like you do; not everyone will enjoy what you enjoy.
Credibility to your earlier claims is being lost, because you are apparently one sided, and not entertaining the possibility that people are different. In the real world, no two people are alike. No two gamers are alike, either.
I love games with complexity personally. Make a massively multiplayer game with complexity, socially and politically, and watch the money flow. From my wallet.

Im level 23 now in the RU beta with the 3rd party english patch.
That said, im thrilled, best game i had my hands on for the recent 3 years.
Dont expected it to be tab-targeting, but also dont expected the movement to be affecting the combat.
Surprise surprise.
I love it ^^
Its hilarious to see ESO or wildstar having phasing all over the game world and instancing everywhere.
Man archeage is going to get some beatigns from a true AAA sandbox mmorpg.
Lol at mortal online, repopulation, and dark fall online.
Heck what boggles my mind is everythign is in real time game world no loading or instancing on a cryengine 3.
insane. THIS is how you do polished sandbox mmorpg. wooo
All those so called sandbox mmorpg is going to get their ass handed to them this year for sure.
hahah you beat me to it
very nice to bash small low budget indie titles..
Expect some triple A sandbox MMOs by actual triple A developers in the future.
Thempark MMOs are a dead end. Market is over saturated completly with this stuff, only a few good ones will survive.
People want virtual player driven worlds with real competition, economical conflict, territory conflict and player combat open world.
This is what sandbox MMO is all about, player conflict.
Erm, no they don't..
huh? Well then they should stick to their themeparks, they have plenty to choose from
Some may not, some do.
