I saw a post earlier about how all the MMORPGs are more or less implimenting single player story lines and it got me thinking about one of the things I loved about Asheron's Call, which were server quests.
Basically, I'm looking for a game that brings the server together as a whole to accomplish something. Some examples from Asheron's Call (which I love) are:
- Monsters invade a NPC town and everyone on the server rushes to the town to defend it.
- Server resourece gathering. Everyone on the server gathers and turns in a particular resource and once the entire server has turned in a certain amount, something happens (something is built, monster is summoned, portal opened, etc. lots of possibilities).
- Developer controlled boss mob fights. For anyone that never experienced this, basically a game developer is sitting at a computer playing the game as some super powerful boss monster and wreaking havoc on the server until enough players band to gether to kill him.
Those are just some of the examples of server quests, there are probably more possibilities from other games that I don't know about, but these should give you the idea of what I'm looking for. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

The closest game I know of that is kind of like what you are describing would be the zone wide events/invasions in RIFT. Basically monsters invade each zone periodically/randomly and players flock to these zones to finish the event and beat the big bad boss.
The boss isn't developer controlled, but the zone events are a lot of fun I'll say. I enjoy them when I log in still even though I don't play RIFT as much as I used to.
It's F2P (completely all the way to 60) so no harm in going to give it a shot if you are up for it.
