Evidence of Very Smooth Performance with Hundreds on Screen in PVP

BelgaraathBelgaraath Member UncommonPosts: 3,205

I was amazing at the performance considering it looked like a battle right out of Battle for Helms Deep lol. Especially with all of the hundreds of special effects and abilities going on. Very impressive.

Edit: If you jump to around the 7:00 mark or so, the battle is huge.

This has pretty much been my experience 100% of the time as I was playing beta.  All this crying about lag in large fights seem fictitious to me since I haven't experienced it once.  More than likely, there are other variables such as the whiners having pathetic PCs or Europeans connecting from across the ocean, etc.

That's exactly what I experienced.  Very well done.

I agree. There are so many variables that may affect what one perceives as lag. I have a very solid gaming rig and I've been experiencing slowness after 2 hours or so of playing. Ill be monitoring my CPU temperatures at release to try to get at what may be causing it with the fan running all the time, but one might think there is something wrong with the game when I know for a fact its my PC. Trying to hold off on getting a Falcon Northwest Fragbox or Tiki if I can keep my current rig going a bit longer :-).

Theres still allot of people out there that thinks a 7 year old PC should run this game on max settings.

Most people complaining about lag were talking about server lag. Not frame rate lag. Spells were taking several seconds after being cast to go off.  The weapon swap was even worse from what I've heard. There were some people talking about frame rate lag but for the most part it was server lag.

Edit: He was casting there was no cast bar to see when it should have ended. Also auto attack with staff =/= casting.

The crying about lag was especially about SERVER LAG and not FPS.

Pressing a skill button and even after 20 seconds nothing happens or doing 1vs1 pvp but actually both are only dancing around because they cant hit each other.

In all 4 weekend betas I saw such performance issues in cyrodiil, in the last weekend beta it was much better but there were still horrend lag spikes.

In addition there is an issue that players with a certain PC setup get freezes for some seconds, hopefully they will find a fix for this for those who suffer from it.

Of course he was casting. He even spent around 8:30 talking about how low he keeps getting on Magica. Can you point out where he says he is experiencing tons of casting lag or weapon swap issues?

Most of my AvA experience was smooth like this also but as you can see, the pvp is gorgeous to look at but gameplay-wise it is pretty boring.

You're just standing there trying to avoid siege weapon hits while trying to hit someone with a single spell before he evaporates from all the people trying to hit him aswell.

I know this is low level pvp and you're pretty weak but still, we should be able to last longer in battle so you can have some more fighting action.

I already bought this game and looking forward to see endgame PVP, but as of right now, a casual just trying to pop in pvp for a quick fun is not gonna have much fun besides looking at all the stuff happening on screen.

I've been in a few battles where I was healed and managed to stay in the fight longer so I don't die within 2 hits, it makes a big difference. Specially if you're enemy is doing the same and you're not just facerolling them which is no fun.

Healers will be in high demand in PVP, same goes for tanks.

Maybe him but the chat lines were filled with massive complains and really a lot of them did suffer with server lag. This is not just ficitonal, it was more or less UNPLAYABLE.

It could be that these are all EU players. The EU servers in the last beta and located in the US did offer better performance but there were still sometimes huge lag spikes.

Though I agree about the freezing issue which they ackowledged and said they were fixing (I never experienced it), do you not think that some of it was due to the fact that the beta's you participated in were 'Stress Tests'? You do understand the purpose of a stress test right?  For all we know they were running automated scripts in the background to further increase load to break it if they could.

There was indeed some severe lag bugs in one of the previous betas (second last one I think), but they fixed it and it was actually a coding issue and not server related.

That was a pretty epic battle.

    The performance looks pretty impressive.

I just can't get over the design decision to not have friendly fire.  What you get is this...massive blobs throwing AoE's with no strategy whatsoever.

If there was a stress test for all and therefore big performance hits what is the point of this video prooving something ? Good maybe he had no performance issues in general or in the short time he did film the battles.

It could be that EU players had the most problems in addition to the normal "stress testings".

First I made the edit to say he was casting but there is no cast bar to determine when any cast should have ended, therefor you can't see the server lag.

Second You can't take one video and say there is no server lag for the majority of people. Just like I can't say there is by the number of people posting on the forums saying there is. All I can do is say there are more people saying they have had server lag in large battles than those saying they have never had them from what I've seen.

And third why does he have to mention to he is having casting lag for him be actually be having it? If I were making a video I wouldn't be complaining about the game while playing it. People don't want to watch a video of someone playing complaining about the game.

away negative energy...both of you! lol. It was simply to show that with the stress testing they have been doing (pushing the servers beyond capacity) and with the tweaking to the code and infrastructure I'm sure they are doing in the background, this is what we can expect to see more at release and considering what I have witnessed in other games, this was very smooth performance and an impressive feat. I'm impressed, sorry! lol..

Actually when it lags the hotbar will still look like its trying to press the spell

You are right about the lag being an issue though but it was due to campaign population, if you were in a campaign that didn't have a full (locked) faction then the lag wasn't noticeable at all, if you had one or more factions at the cap then it would lag with spikes of over 6 seconds before the spell would cast.

The guild I was in the beta before last was in a capped campaign for the first 2 days and couldn't play due to lag making cyrodiil  completely unplayable, we changed to a campaign that was still pretty full but no capped factions and non of us experienced any lag at all

The purpose of a final "beta" is to sell the game; show everybody that all is well; sweep away all doubts.

    i7-3820

    Gigabyte Super OC 680

    8 gigs of 1600 ram

    2 x Samsung 500 GB 840 Evo set up in Raid 0

Not the best rig but Its not the worst  and I experienced server lag that occurred in which my abilities would cast a couple seconds after I pressed them ( like 3 - 7 seconds later )  and at its worst, wouldnt' cast at all.  Not even combat wise, just going through a door or trying to teleport from one area to another within Cyrodil would lag even as much as 30 seconds of waiting.

I have read from other threads that supposedly Zenimax was involuntarily testing stress in some campaigns but I don't remember it being quoted from an actual dev so I can't verify it being genuine.

I don't think so :-). I think it was a stress test. It was way too buggy to be an advertising campaign lol. I think people tend to use it for the purpose of trying it out and not to test, that I agree with hehe.

I saw that a couple of weeks ago :-). Good performance for that too. If only they spawned in more random places, like in front of a keep when all 3 sides are attacking. I know Zenimax said that it would make it too chaotic, but to me thats the fun of it all...CHAOS!!!! lol.
