I ended up cancelling the gamestop order and preordering a digital imperial edition from greenman (no toys for me =( teh sadz), but that's okay, my wife doesn't have to sacrifice her 5 days because I got bamboozled. It would have been a 4 day total loss as we both had the game preordered. And we paid for those days, and at the end of it all time is much more valuable than a statue and artbook - I can always get a copy later if I feel the need, but I'll never be able to go back in time).
Even though it's a day too late to save the physical edition, I have to give kudos to Zenimax customer service - I was contacted this morning with an offer to grant me the 5 day early access on the original order, unfortunately I did the cancel/reorder thing yesterday. Such is life.
Original dilemma:
I pre-ordered the physical imperial edition in January when it was announced, finally got my code from gamestop after waiting patiently. It was a 3 day code.
So I called Gamestop and they said, "sorry we ran out of 5 day codes" which I'm a bit confused how they ran out of a code that should be associated with my purchase. Anyway, they told me to contact Zenimax, so I did.
And after getting my response (which was timely) from Zenimax I am baffled. How do they not have the ability to grant my account the full 5 day early access? Aren't they the ones who made the game? The CS rep is now telling me that I have to contact Gamestop again and basically just keep asking for managers until they find a code to give me.
It's just 2 days, I get that and I'm less upset than I probably sound, it's just a bit irritating that I paid for a list of goods and am not receiving what I paid for. Anyway, I'll give it another go with Gamestop and see if they can right their wrong, bleh hate sitting on the phone for nonsense.

It's rare if ever that a manufacturer covers mistakes made at the retail level. So it doesn't surprise me Zen couldn't do much, now gamestop on the other hand, they seem to always have this problem. My guess is employees take these missing codes. It's just a hunch of course. Yet it seems likely to me. I have a hard time believing they would have so many system screw ups, this seems to happen for every MMO.

Just cancel your pre-order and purchase elsewhere, like Digital Edition from Elder Scrolls Online store.
This. With such a long history of screwing people over I have no clue why people still shop there.
Gamestop is one of the most arrogantly, and, badly run game stores that I know of. Its not uncommon to order a product from them, with special bonuses, or, extras, only to get, "just the game" that you ordered, while they keep all the bonus material, or, special codes for themselves. Hell, back in 2005, I ordered the Wookie DLC for Star Wars Galaxies, with bonus materials, plus, a code for an exclusive speeder, only associated with that DLC, and, all I got was a standard game disc a week later in the mail. Plus, even though the order was around 24 bucks, the company waived the cross border duties, and, I ended up paying another 40 bucks to the shipping company for the delivery, even though I had paid the international shipping costs for the package. And, the worst part, even after I complained to Gamestop, and, Lucas Arts, along with SONY, I never did get the bonus material I paid full price for, nor, was I able to get a refund, even after sending the DLC back, unopened. And, 1 week before the DLC went live on the game, Gamestop was selling the bonus materials on EBAY, for nothing less then 45 bucks. They were stealing from paying customers, stealing from the SWG game company, and, they were making huge amount of cash off those sales, and neither SONY, or, Lucas arts cared about at all.
Simply put, I'll never buy another product from then, not in a billion years, or, end of time.
One of my friends works at a Gamestop and its common that employees give codes to friends and regular customers. Sometimes even the staff take them for themselves. As my friend told me, they get a set amount of codes for each promotion but the managers think its better business sometimes to give them to their big spenders to keep them coming back. Sad part is if they gave away your code, there isnt much they can do at this point to make it right with you. Personally I would file a Better Business complaint as this kinda of behavior needs to stop. This is one of the reasons I dont buy from stores. I buy from web stores like GMG or direct from the game company.
This is exactly the case - heck there are some sites where a guy is selling 5 day access codes for $5.... Hmmm - wonder where he got those at, lol So no doubt this what the case is for sure!
I've always heard this, but never had that problem myself . . . until now. And as others have said, my very first thought was that some kid probably took the code for himself or passed it off to a friend.
I suppose I may have to pass up the statue and book and just get the digital version. Poopy.
Nope its not. They gave the codes to Gamestop to give to their customers. Gamestop has not done their part. I personally would ask for my money back at the store.
No, it's not false advertising, it sounds like theft/fraud at an individual store. Getting the company (Gamestop) to fix something that went wrong at one of their stores is a whole different matter. If they don't give a damn, you're out of luck, unless you bought on credit card, in which case just hit them with a chargeback if they refuse the refund.
However, given that physical CE's are sold out everywhere in the known universe (other than Ebay), you may be in a very bad spot if you really want that statue...
In about a week, this will have seemed like a silly thing to get bent out of shape over.
Launch will probably be messy with server issues and overcrowding just like every other MMO. Look at it as a blessing in disguise.
I pre-ordered the digital Imperial Edition and don't even plan on installing until a week or so after launch. Why deal with the chaos.
At this point OP I wouldn't even bother with the store you ordered it at, Im sure gamestop has to have some sort of corporate number where someone can give you better customer service.
I don't know why anyone still orders Psychical box editions of games anymore.. I made the switch a long time ago, steam just made the transition very easy. I use to love actually having a box with game art and a booklet/instruction manual to read on the toilet , but the upside of having no clutter , avoiding a trip to the store and the ease of just downloading and playing the game the second it releases it so much better.
I guess if your one of those doll collectors and enjoy the lore books then it makes sense.....kinda

Iol cmon, what year do you think it is, 2001 ? When was the last major MMO launch that had the problems you describe, The past 4 or 5 MMO's I have played have all had a smooth launch with the exception of the occasional 15 min Q.
Aloha Mr Hand !
They may not be able to get more codes because as I said people (most likely these store employees) are selling these "5 day access codes" on other sites. So if gamestop tlls Zenimax hey we sold 200 editions and they get the 200 codes - then Gamestop goes back to Zenimax saying ummm we lost 150 of them please give us more - why would Zenimax do that?
The employees stealing the codes and selling themselves are to blame and so is gamestop for not putting some measures in place to prevent (not even sure if that is possible to be honest).
People keep saying that but there's a reason that some of us still buy the physical copy of a CE.
And yeah, I feel bad for the people that still do business with Gamestop.
Like others have said, keep calling and keep asking for a Manager.
One other solution is to buy one of those $5 cards from Target or Walmart that gives you 5 day early access and add that to your account as well, to get the 5 days. Then you can still get the physical copy from Gamestop when it comes in.
And please do report them to the BBB. Everyone assumes that everyone else is doing it but it's worth the time taken.
Rusque, I went through the same thing with Gamestop and this is exactly what you have to do. I had to explain it the CS rep at Gamestop about 20 times. She was bloody useless. Finally, I just asked for a manager and told him, here's what happened, I'm pissed, you're going to make it right and this is how. Finally, have over an hour on the phone with Gamestop, I got a 5 day code.
It's the last time I do an MMO preorder through Gamestop.
That's all well and good. But, what if he actually wanted the Imperial Edition with the Art Book and Statue like I did? If he cancels, he can't get another. They are sold out.
Well, I guess problem has been resolved. Cancelled order, purchased Digital Imperial from greenman for $64 instead. I know it's just 2 days, but it didn't sit right with me and I didn't want gamestop thinking what they did was cool. Oh well, guess they saved me $45.
Glad that solution worked for you. I didn't have that luxury. My wife really wanted the art book. Happy wife, happy life.
Funny last major MMO that had a smooth launch was Rift. FF was bad but most have problems. The worst launch I have played was WoW. They were handing out free game time hand over fist to try and keep people happy for all the down time. Also maxing out peoples rest exp lol.
oK, Ill give you that one lol. That was actually the last mmo launch I played lol. For me it wasn't as bad though as others described, I think the game launched on a Friday and was fine for 2 days and then everything went to shit on Sunday and was basically unplayable all day. By Monday I was up & running , so it was one day, big deal.
