Is WildStar Worth $60?

popezaphodpopezaphod Member UncommonPosts: 58

Question: Is WildStar worth $60 plus a subscription?

History: I played WoW from Open Beta through BC, then came back for WotLK and quit before Cata.  I like Vanilla WoW through BC very much but am not a fan with where the game has gone since then.  Vanilla WoW is my "gold standard" for MMOs.

I played RIFT from maybe 1.4 through much of Storm Legion.  I got burned out but really enjoyed the game and the mechanics.

Some other games I tried:

  • TERA - Fun but no end game to speak of
  • Neverwinter - Fun but really grindy end game
  • ST:TOR - Boring
  • LotRO - Boring
  • Secret World - Didn't like the setting, didn't hold my interest
  • FF XIV - Not bad, but I've never been a big FF fan and it didn't hold my interest

I like themeparks and despise PvP.

I have no interest in ArchAge nor TESO.

I have been very interested in WS but I am not willing to pay $60 for a game I may only play for a week.  I never got into any of the betas, so I have no experience with WS at all.  I have read many posts from people saying, "This game is great!" and just as many posts saying, "This game is horrible!"

So tell me: Do you think this game is worth $60?

To me ( and only ME) ..no. Too much like WoW that I completely have written it off.

But that being said...I hope that it receives massive success. I would very much like to see a subscription mmo make it out there. And would not like to see it go f2p any time soon. Good trails to all you Wildstar fans in the months to come. image

There's going to be more beta weekend events for WS.

Personally i didnt like it but that does not mean that its a "horrible" game. Try to get a beta access and see for yourself, there is still time for it.

Well you are going to get the same thing here most likely. For ME and thats all I can speak for I had more fun playing Wildstar. This is all anyone can really say yet they make it come off as fact for all who play.

Both are not worth $60. I have no clue how some have no problem paying for something that is so unfinished yet they will make sure and tell you..you are NOT PLAYING A BETA...yet people will defend it with all its bugs and say "what did you expect all mmos that launch are like this". Sheep.. they they just follow. They toss out $60 and expect nothing in return.

Yet for ME $60 for a digital download of 18.45 gb thats I can copy and give away yet cost us $60. So really your paying $60 to just play one month only. Cost them nothing to have a copy of a copy of a copy ready. Not like digital music.

Give people a BOX and you give the illusion your getting something for your money. You are but what  $10 to really make all that.

See if you expect something for your money you stand alone. Most are like sheep they will follow what everyone else does. They say they expect yet dont. Like a doc coming out where they put two little girls in mall (closely watched) as if they were lost to see who would help. At the start they asked people if you saw some little child looks lost what would you do? ALL everyone said they would DUH help.

Yet 616 people walked by this little girl alone and did nothing. Like that car crash you saw..yeah you were the one that just drove by maybe even took a pic.

So me..I will buy both games and test to see. I don't care someone says its kiddish or AWESOME I will find out my self. I like you have to pay $60 to see.

    I m playing almost 10 years WoW & EvE.

I was not hyped about this game, mostly of its combat, as i m a lover of tab target.

After i played the last weekend beta i have to say i changed my mind 100%. The game was a pleasant surprise.

    Combat and animations are excellent.

Well made world,  no loading screens, no phasing etc.

    Graphics are very well designed.

Housing ROCKS! One of the best in mmo's.

    Movement is superb.

Questing is a bit generic but more fun than in WoW.

Crafting is very interesting and much deeper than in WoW.

It has almost no bugs despite it has more than 2 months to release.

    Its fun. Humor is everywhere.

It has of the highest quality PvE dungeons/raids/public quests/adventures/shiphands etc.

WoW like PvP with arenas/bg's + warplots (40 man)

Great talent & stats system. Not revolutionary but way deeper than in WoW.

    No flying mounts.

    Excellent UI!

Subscription can be also acquired through in game currency (like EvE's PLEX)

Box price of 40 Euros (i m from EU) is way less than other mmo's price and a hell of a good deal imo.

All in all is a very quality game, but I don't know if you are going to like it or not. Its up to you and your tastes.

I can say that most of my rl friends and my WoW guild m8's are going to move to Wildstar. Time will show if we are going to stay or not, but for the first time after vanila WoW, we have a good feeling for a mmo :)

To people who says its to much like wow, ignore them because they did not play the game or they didnt get to far into it. Is it worth 60 bucks? Not unless you are willing to play just an ok game to level 25+. Your first 15 levels is as far as most people get that hate the game and if thats all you see I would not like the game as well.

Once you get mid lvl and start PvPing and doing dungeon runs you will get it. This game is designed to play with people but not so much when you lvl. If you like housing, pvp, raiding and doing dungeons, this would be well worth 60 bucks. I have been in beta for a while and Im dropping money on the deluxe for my wife and I because if EQN sucks we will be back here to stay a while. Dont buy into the negitive hype. There is a solid game here. Even the other systems like crafting have some real depth. I think WS will be a dark horse of 2014.

I think it's a great game, loaded with content for a new release, great graphics (subjective) and it's fun!  Definitely worth it to me.

I don't understand, you read many posts and apparently still can't decide? Have you actually read about the games content and features? Have you watched any videos of people playing the game?

If you still can't decide after all these things, I don't think MMO's in general are a good fit for you.

I cant help you decide if it is worth it to you, its not to me.

Not sure I agree with you, I had fun in game as soon I got out of tutorial . Some people will never be able to get over their dislike for a certain type of graphics but that it is not wildstar fault.

Here in U.K. the price is 34.99 pounds vs 49.99 Teso (both normal edition) and for me Wildstar is worth the money (based on 14 levels in beta, not sure if I preorder or wait for launch). More than 40 pounds and I will have probably waited for a sale, not because the game isn't fun but I don't want to support an increase in game price without an increase in quality and quantity of content.

As others have said, the only way for you to decide is to play it yourself. I won't be spending $60 on it as it's the the type of game I want to play anymore.

I recommend Asiasoft's PSO2 , but it's about to start closed beta and it is in English. Mind you I wouldn't make it the only MMO you play as it will become repetative. As for WS , well I don't really know , try a beta ?

    Cheers,

I had fun playing this game, and i am actually missing it. To the people who are saying it needs to be perfect in BETA. Well they are just a special kind of stupid.

Carbine is actively bug fixing. in the course of the weekend they fixed the 3 most noticeable bugs that were complained about. And this was before the beta was even over. The Delay that we experianced was Noted after the beta saying " due to a programing error we gave the Mobs a higher priority then the players, This has been fixed"

Carbine cares about this game, This is not in any way shape or form a cash grab. The game is good it allows much playstyle choice and YES you can use a Tab Target system you just have to look in the options and find it.

Is this game worth 60 dollars, My preorder says yes.

    Because i can.

    • ST:TOR - Boring

Well, it's hard to compare games, but honestly, if you found TOR boring, I don't think you'll like Wildstar.  WS is basically TOR, only with even worse graphics, even worse story, no SW IP and with dodging.

If you liked TOR except for the fact htat it was Star Wars and you hated having to read/listen to more than 1 line of quests text/audio, then you may quite enjoy wildstar.

Yep have to play it to see if you like it. Personally I have been in beta almost from the start of beta and have to say I won't be buying it. Uninstalled and will not play it again.

Like so many others have said, try to grab a beta key and try it out for yourself.

Personally, I was planning on buying and playing the game but the beta convinced me otherwise.  It just isn't the game for me starting with the graphics.  I just couldn't get into the world as much as I wanted to.  Way too busy and cluttered for my middle aged eyes.  I also wasn't a fan of the combat.

I do think it is going to be a good game though and will appeal to a broad audience.  I really liked the crafting and the housing was fantastic.  In fact the housing is what initially drew me to the game and of course the video trailers.   I so much wanted to love WildStar but unfortunately it didn't click for me.  Again though, try it out.   From general chat, seemed like many folks were really enjoying the game and planning on purchasing it.  I wish Carbine the best of luck with WildStar.

I think it's completely worth it. But I didn't know that until I had already pre purchased it. Currently as it stands, it is the most fun I've had in a game since vanilla WoW, and I can't wait to keep playing each beta weekend until release.

So tell me: Do you think this game is worth $60?

Pretty much any MMO is worth $60.  The better question is the game worth your time which is far more valuable than $60

For me the answer is yes.

    For you maybe.

I have played beta for almost a year now an have played to 50 and done veteran dungeons but I have not done any raid testing.

Based on your resume I would guess yes you would like Wildstar.  The game is well made, fun and has an emphasis on endgame and long term play. But there are some downsides and somethings you may or may not like.

I will start with the bad.  Or what may be bad for you.

the endgame is not nearly as well tested or as diverse as Rift was at release.  But Rift was the best tested endgame I have seen and the largest releasing with 10 very good dungeons and 1 well tested raid followed quickly by 2 more raids in the 1st month.

Wildstar is a bit lacking here.  It has 4 veteran dungeons and 6 veteran adventures.  The adventures are supposed to be the equivalent of dungeons but they never worked out very well in practice and still need a ton of work. Complexity wise the fightsare not near as complex as Rift dungeons. Much simpler with a very strong emphasis on movement.  Part of the reason is the LAS limits class complexity so much.  The over emphasis on movement may bother some people too much.  I think the dungeons are fun and well done.

Second problem is the class system.  Because of the LAS and the limit of 30 skills per class the classes are pretty simple.  This is not Rift with the great flexibility of classes, complex speccing and thoughtful character building.  It is much more simplified.  Classes and character development is not a strength of the game.

The endgame testing was limited.  Beta ended far too soon and the game is being rushed out.  Not rushed out in a ToR or AoC sense but it is being rushed out.  Guilds are still testing endgame and I guess we will see how good it is in June but I expected a bit more especially after the promises of Gaffney.  Overall the game is very good with a ton of well made content but there are many unfinished aspects of the game.  It could really use another 6+ months of development.  But it is what it is and its arguably the 2nd best game to release in the last 10 years behind Rift.

The one big reason to like the game s the emphasis on endgame.  Carbine has said they have spent over 50% of their resources on endgame the last year and this is where they intend to make their mark.  So a lot should be expected here even if a lot was unfinished when beta ended a few weeks ago.

The next reason to look forward to the game is difficulty.  The developers are commited to making the game difficult.  They tried making it very difficult to level last summer but so many complained they had to change plans but recently they have moved back to upping the leveling difficulty.  Ramping up the difficulty form level 20-50 to train players for veteran dungeons which are quite hard.  Many casuals are going to have problems.  Many will get better and take pride in improving.  But many will also quit and spend quite a lot of time trashing the game on forums.  This has been an ongoing phenomenon. But it appears that difficulty is one area that the Devs are not willing to budge on for now.  I give them some respect here for standing strong in their desire to make a challenging game and stick to it when the rest of the genre has lost its soul and gone easymode.

The answer then is maybe.  It depends on what kind of gameplay you like. Can you live with a bit of the game being unfinished?  Will you enjoy action gameplay with a strong emphasis on movement?  Do you mind class development being pretty simple and classes not being that flexible? Do you love raiding and endgame?  Do you like challenge and pushing yourself to play better?

IMO Wildstar is a great and well made game.  But its not for everyone and everyone should not like it.  There is nothing wrong with not liking it.  But if you do the game has a lot to offer.  IMO it is just a fun game.  It has that fun factor that many games simply lack.  It also has intrinsic rewards as it pushes players to become better players which results in satisfaction and a sense of achievement that we do not see in many MMOs.

no mmo is worth $60 up front any more. They can thank their predecessors for that.
  • BruhzaBruhza Member UncommonPosts: 391

Out of the options we have I would say yes, it is worth the $60.

This is the most polished game I have ever seen for something that is about to release. I have honestly not seen devs care so much about their game than these guys. They have proven that they do NOT want to do things half-way and that they will fix whatever needs to be fixed.

Is it perfect? No, but then again no MMO atm is.

Fair warning though. Make sure you somewhat know what class you want to play, leveling in this game is fairly brutal (Not in the un-fun way, but more in the "Get ready to grind quests" sort of way. Seeing you played vanilla WoW though, you should be fine.)

On a side note, this game has some of the best dungeons I have ever played in my entire life, and I'm not even a huge fan of PvE.

  • poyozopoyozo Member UncommonPosts: 33

Well, If you are a fan of Vanilla wow through BC then you are the demographic that this game is shooting for. If I'm not mistaken, about half the devs in Wildstar are ex Blizz devs from the Vanilla Wow era and they are making this game explicitly for the Vanilla WoW fans.

I can tell you from personal experience that the game is very fun. The combat and animations are fluid and feel nice. The world is huge and completely open. That said, having played the beta a few months ago, it needs polish. I just don't know if its worth the 15$ a month tag.

  • JaedorJaedor Member UncommonPosts: 1,173

I preordered to play with friends from another game, and I'm seriously considering upgrading to the deluxe edition for one of the extras. Worth it to me? Yes. I don't intend to play a lot but I'll enjoy my first 30 days and see how it goes.

WS is definitely a themepark game, somewhat reminiscent of vanilla WoW.

    Your mileage may vary.

  • LazzaroLazzaro Member UncommonPosts: 548

Considering the games you listed, this one should be right up your ally. It's probably one of the better themepark mmo's for awhile.
