Ultimate question

CouganCougan Member UncommonPosts: 422

Anyone know if you need an active skill from the skill tree to equip a Ultimate from that line?

I was interested in taking the ultimate from the alliance war Support tree but didnt want to keep any of the actives

Dammit!  based upon your thread title I was ready to fire off the "42" answer....damn serious questions on forums.  But to your question (we'll debate the ultimate-ness of it later), I have no clue, sorry :(

I never tried to actually equip an ultimate from a line I had no skills with, however I'm going to say you won't have a problem doing so.  You must remember however that you will need to level the skill line by using abilities in order to unlock the ultimate for the line.

My guess is that it works like all other skills.  Once unlocked you can remove all other lower tier abilities from your bar and keep the ultimate.

Once you have leveled up the skill line to unlock the ultimate, you can slot it and remove the other skills from that line if you want. The only limiting factor for slotted skills is weapons. You can slot a weapon skill for a weapon you are not using to level it up, but you will not be able to use that skill until you equip its weapon.

Not to challenge anyone's veracity, but several of the skills' descriptions are annotated with comments such as "Adds one to the Ultimate" or "Adds two to the Ultimate" (or words to that effect) as if it is necessary to accumulate "points" to use them.

I never used one in the Beta's, so I have no clue.

But, insofar as answering the ultimate question: Because.

I had wiped my skills at 15 and all of them maintained there rank. So I was able to keep an Ultimate from a skill line with no other skills. Tested and confirmed personally.

I believe that relates to how fast the ultimate power pool accumulates when you use abilities.  Ultimate's cool down is determined by needing to build up points to spend on it so those abilities just allow you to build up the pool faster and use the ultimate ability more often.

I can't think of any reason you can just put a ultimate on a ability bar although some passives are boosted by the number of abilities from that line you have equipped so if you have a really strong damage boost attached to a passive the ultimate might hit significantly harder if you stack abilities from that line on your action bar.

No you do not.  My partner used a build with 2 hand weapon skills, one magic damage skill and the healing ultimate from Templar tree.

Keep in mind, that to use an ultimate in a skilltree, you need to level the skilltree...  And that requires the use of skills in that tree...

however when you respec, you will keep your level in your skilltrees, and you get your old level back in your skills as soon as you choose it...  But when repeccing you can choose an ultimate skill, in a tree withouth spending any other points inthere..

Gaining access to the ultimate is one thing, and to do that, you do need a skill from that line.

Once you have it though, you can slot just the ultimate and drop the skills from your bar.

It's actually quite common in a lot of late-game weapon focused  builds to slot the morphed fighter's guild ultimate, Flawless Dawnbreaker, just for its passive +13% weapon damage when slotted without any other fighter's guild actives.
