Do you find this game FUN?

TheEasterlinTheEasterlin Member Posts: 75
I have tried Guild wars myself and i dont really like it at all. Compared to WoW, the community is less fun and the game itself is mediocre. There doesnt seem to be updates at all for the game itself. I would give this game a 5 for its price. 50$ is a rip for this. Im gonna go back to sweet WoW and leave this game.

You shouldnt make the mistake to compare two totally different games here. GW does not claim to be a traditional MMORPG. Its more like an instant-action fantasy Counter Strike Game with a little bit of level grind as well. There is only few content exactly because of the special playstyle. If you look for a quest treadmill you may want to look at WoW, EQ2 or whatever.

Conceirning the price - this game has no monthly fee and therefore the price seems pretty ok to me.

Because of the nature of this game you will probably not find such a good community structure like in other games, for sure. But I think the people playing GW dont search for social interactions and a virtual hide out from the reality but more for plain instant fun.

We will see how long this game type can be entertaining. Certainly not for too long, if the developers dont publish some add ons once in a while (what they will and what will compensate for the lack of monthly fee).

The weakness of GW is probably exactly this instant-fun thing btw. What keeps people playing mmorpgs are often not the games, because after a couple of months you just know your game and everything starts to become routine. In most cases its the community - and there GW will have its problems.

find a good guild, thats my advice. The great thing about GW is that you arent forced to play with anyone you don't want to (well, apart from the ring of fire missions at the end, but by then you'll have hopefully found a decent guild), if anyone is being abusive in the cities just /ignore them and never worry about them again.

And in answer to the thread title, yep, i find GW terrific fun (apart from trying to capture elite skills, that sucks a bit). The first time you stand toe to toe with a sand wurm, desperately trying to heal people who rush in like madmen, the many twists and turns in the story, the legendary battles where you wonder quite how your party survived (when it's down to one person with a res signet).

Just make sure you're not basing your opinion on pre-searing, that part of the game is a drag IMO.

    ---sig---

PvE in general is pretty lame, if you think long and hard about it. You are spending your time beating a severely gimped AI that would lose to a well trained monkey. Best not to think too long and hard why you are wasting time playing games in general actually...

I still think it's fun, and we are soon to get the first Live Update with 2 new Major areas to explore =)

And here we go yet again.. same thing as all the other wow fanboi´s..   Cant ppl just go play WoW and leave us GW´s alone? Dont see me posting "wow is a sucky game" in the wow forum do you ?  Well i played wow for 4 months and its a good game. i dont like the pvp part of it. Nothing really to win --->IMO<---  And os im trying GW. But im getting more and more pissed @ WoW because of all the freking fanboi´s flaming GW. If you dont like the game.. cool.  Then put it in your rating of it.  But plz stop spamming the forum with thread after thread about how bad this game is because your getting your ass spanked or becuase there no community. Or whatever your problem with the game is. Just go play what YOU think is fun. Not what some WoW or GW fanboi tells you to.

    Manix out.

Guildwars is the most addictive game since DAoC.

While I was playing WoW, I played for about 8h a week and was bored after a max. time of 2h a day.

After the "free month" I payed the second one, but never logged in again. I even stopped playing PC games until guildwars came out, I think that says all.

PvP is the only motivation for me, WoW has none, resp. it sucks a lot - as far as I was able to try it out, maybe that has changed with the fame system, but I believe a game that wasn't prepared for PvP in the very beginnings will NEVER catch up with games like DAoC or GW, which are aimed at PvP in the endgame.

Guildwars has everything I was waiting for. It's just a perfect game! image

No, you feel that Guild Wars has a less fun community and is rather mediocre compared to WoW, that doesn't make it a fact. ::::15::
I played WoW for a while - and in my experience it's community was far worse than any game I've ever played (except Counter Strike ofcourse) and definitely a lot more rude/less social than Guild War's community. (played on both PvP and RP servers, not PvE)
As for the game itself, I tend to dislike endless questing with no point to it - hence I didn't really think WoW was all that interesting. I tend to like PvP, hence Guild Wars keeps me interested.

No updates? You probaply mean you don't get a sudden message that all the servers are down in order for a new patch - maybe that's because they don't have to shut down the servers to patch the game -_-"
They've updated something every single time you get a message that a new build is released and every single time you have to download new files.
In a few days we'll have 2 new explorable zones introduced to the game - around 4 days ago, the entire PvP system was completely revamped - and balance changes have been made round-the-clock.
This game receives far more updates than WoW ever did, or ever will receive - you just don't notice that an update has been released.

Fortunately we are entitled to state our opinions as we like. And no, will not "leave you alone". As long as I bother I will post a once a while how bad this GW suck, in addition to warn other against buying this piece of junk.

And yes, it is a fact that GW has lame community, as well as it is an overrating to say the game is mediocre.

Tell me, GW fanbois, is it the only thing you can call people; "WoW fanbois", every time someone says they are dissapointed with this game?

Btw: Anyone wanna buy a lame air guitar? If that rings any bell.... For those who didnt understand it, thats about 90% of what happening in the chat rooms; people playing lame air guitars... Impressive community image

How would someone who hasn't even gotten past pre-searing Ascalon know what the Guild Wars community of today is like? Exactly: he wouldn't. ::::07::
The Guitar emote is rarely used, I don't know where you were at but there must have been some sort of party gathering in that district.
Or hey, maybe some people were happy Guild Wars was released and were celebrating. In any case, you wont find many emote-spammers in any city beyond ascalon (and even there the emote-spamming is quite limited nowadays)
In any game with emotes, people will be trying them out early on in the game - it's the exact same deal with WoW or other MMO's with emotes.

As a matter of fact, WoW fanboy is not the appropriate term for someone who continually puts down a game based on 2 hours of play and absolutely no real argumentation, the appropriate term for that is: troll.
And fanboi is not a word ::::15::

You have every right to be dissapointed with the game, but if your opinion is based on 2 hours of play you have (imo.) no right to be telling people not to buy the game, since you have no real experience playing that game after all...
You're not in a position to comment on the community either, since you haven't really experienced it.

Lol, WoW is far worse than GW. WoW is nothing more than an average mmorpg with a little less grind but with a terrible community existing of 13 years old who's goal it is to be as 1337 as possible. No thanks, bye bye , have fun with wow and don't let the door hit you on the way out. image

And you expect a free MMO that is based around quick fixes, auto lvl 20, and pvp to avoid these "13 year olds" how?  If anything there will be more in this game, just like diablo 2.

I don't know why people insist on comparing apples to oranges. WoW is a great MMO, although it is perhaps one of the least social MMO's I have ever played, and I play on RP servers! With my main character a level 28 rogue, most of the quests I get now are un-soloable, and I find it difficult to find players willing to group for anything other than Deadmines or Black Fathom Deep. I don't even earn xp for Deadmines anymore, so I find myself growing bored with that character already. The guild I was in never did anything whatsoever in the few months I was with them so I recently /gquit. But does WoW itself suck because of this? No, it's just that the game doesn't inherently force anyone to be in groups other than the instanced dungeons (assuming you're not a high-level just farming the low-level dungeons solo...)  And obviously some people have had better success than me finding good guilds, or at least good temporary groups. Do I still play? You bet, it's a great game, and if I grow bored of a character I can always make more.

On the other hand we have Guild Wars, which despite being highly covered on all the various MMO news sites, is marketed as an Online Action RPG, not an MMO. The easiest analogy to GW is comparing it to Diablo 2, with the towns being an uber 3D avatar chat version of battle.net chat. There's nothing "MMO" about GW. You might argue that the towns are the true MMO function of the game, but I would argue back that with the towns being sub-divided into districts to help prevent lag and over-crowding, that rather lops off the first "M" (Massively) of the MMO acronym. Also as an Online Action RPG, the emphasis is on action obviously.

Like any other online game, there are always the asses or "griefers" and I suspect since GW has no monthly fee, the griefer children will arrive soon enough. But I will say I've had a much easier time finding friendly, helpful players to group with, and to make a guild with already in the short time GW has been out than I have over the months of playing WoW.

I don't have any Pre-Searing characters left to see how ArenaNet modified the Pre-Searing primary quests, but I do feel something should be done to let new players know that the whole Pre-Searing era is just for learning how the game works and training your character a bit, because most of them think it's the whole game and are disappointed when they learn there are only the 5 towns and suddenly they are level 6 and out of quests.

  • DonavynDonavyn Member Posts: 71

^^ Correct. Guild Wars should never be compared to any other MMORPG on the market, as its not a comparison. Guild Wars is making their own strides, and prefer to be titled a CORPG, a Cooperative/Competitive Online Role Playing Game.

You're also not going to see game updates, unless there's an emergency client patch where you will need to log out and log in to download it. All the updates are streamed in the background while you play. There's no need to wait for a patcher program to update your game prior to play, you're off and running the moment you select your charadter and click the button to Log In.

If you evaluated Guild Wars with the concepts of comparing it to something else, then you wasted your own time. Guild Wars as far as I can tell, is unique and can easily be the main, or a pleasant addition to any othe game you're currently playing.

I rather enjoy the community on guildwars, they seem to know whats going on within the game, and within the world around them, they have intelligence and free will and are not brainwashed by some corporate big wigs who take their fan base for granted and are willing to speak their minds in a educated fashion.

The community in World of Warcraft is bar none the worst I have ever seen in well over a decade of playing MUD's/MMORPG's, they are primarily the old Diablo / Counterstrike type of people...."B.net Kiddies" as one of the phrases has been coined.

Other then CS and D2, I have not seen so many "Ass-Hats" in a single place.

So if the average gamers idea of a "fun" community is dealing with children on a regular basis that are ignorant, self-involved, whiny, are able to flame a thousand posts on their official forums in a single bound, then yes, WoW has a excellent community of pre pubescent ignorant gnomes.

I should also add that there are as always exceptions, I have found several people on both the woW forums, aswell as within the game, that are friendly helpful, and "fun"....I would have to guesstimate that about 95% of the people playing the game are the "Ass-Hats" and that elusive 5% divided across all servers are the ones that are there to actually have fun and not just to ruin someones day.

Ya and I'm sure half naked dancing trolls is impressive toimage Considering WoW's community is made up of frigen 2 year olds. And we're not saying they're WoW fanboi's cause they hate the game we're saying they're WoW fanboi's **cough cough chrisel cough cough** because they keep saying WoW is better than GW over and over again without giving a reason **cough cough chrisel again cough cough**. And I'm sure you got lost on your way to the GW chat and wandered into the WoW chat cause there's defianlty not anyone play "air guitar" if that's even possible on the internetimage. And we are entitle to our opinion but nobody wants to hear it over and over again especially when nobody agrees with you!image

I got Guild Wars the day it came out and I played on a LAN with two of my friends for no less than 8 hours. I find it to be extremely fun. I've played WoW, FFXI, Everquest, Ragnarok Online, and Runescape and I like this more than any of them. Added onto that, it's free. I stopped playing WoW and FFXI when I found I was only playing because I felt I needed to since I was playing monthly. That's another good thing about Guild Wars, if I do get tired of it, which I don't think will happen any time soon, I don't have to worry about playing because I'm paying. I find it best to play it with friends you know, but even solo is fine. Great game, but as is appearent, not everyone thinks so.

Ehh... I posted twice by accident. I'm such a n00b. I'll just add on to what I was saying. The level 20 cap isn't really that bad. The first time you go through the game it takes a long time to get to it, since you have to real idea of what you're doing. And although I'm not a real big PvP person, the PvP in Guild Wars isn't bad even though you go auto-20. You're still missing just about all the skills and all of the runes, which you need to play the actual game to get. I would play right now, but I'm increadibly tired so I'll also end this post.

GW is the ultimate casual player game. It is not for hardcore players and the devs have stressed this. If you don't like it, perhaps you should be playing a game that requires more time and effort. GW is mindless fun. It is not supposed to be deep.

I find Guild Wars to be an excellent complement to your other MMORPG's. There's no spending tireless nights trying to level up your character and if you choose to leave for an extended period of time, you can come back later without the worries of wasting your money on unused monthly payments. Guild Wars and other MMORPG’s like WoW and Everquest are really in two different game genres so expecting them to follow the same trend is ludicrous. image<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

    That's funny...on the GW homepage, there's this...

Live Update Preview: New Explorable Areas
As part of our commitment to bringing you new content via our free live updates, the first streaming update for Guild Wars offers players access to two extensive new explorable areas: the barren expanse of Grenth's Footprint and the fiery depths of Sorrow's Furnace. You can get a sneak peek at these two areas today, with concept art and a bit of the lore on this page.

And on Wednesday, we'll preview this area with an in-game movie, a movie that will also be screened at the E3 trade show in Los Angeles.

GW is great, in short periods or long. I have enjoyed it and don't really care if there are people who say that it ain't worth my money. I like it and after all it's my money we're talking about here..

image  For the last time, GW is not an mmorpg it is an "online rpg".  Comparing it to true mmorpgs is comparing apples and steaks, it just doesn't make sense.  For all those people saying wow is better, perhaps that is because people are affraid of something new and different, and affraid of change.  Wow is a good game, probably even better in some aspects compared to GW, however it should be since it costs a infinite amount more than GW a month.  Go back to wow, this game doesn't need anymore crybaby whinners, every game community already has enough of those.

  • TorakTorak Member Posts: 4,905

The results of your poll so far speak for itself.

The reason you dont see any updates are this....

*An interesting new idea called streaming. This means data is fed to your PC while you play rather then having you shut down and wait.

Companies just cant satisfy MMORPGers. They complain when the servers are down and they complain when they dont go down.

*Second reason, the game just released on April 28th. How many updates do you expect them to do? Daily? (which, in fact, they do)

WoW is a great game, if you like it, stick with it.

Guild Wars is a great game, if like it, stick with it.

"Communities" are subjective as far as a factor for "fun" maybe you didnt talk to the right people....maybe you didnt give it a chance? How many hours in WoW have you put in vs how many in GW? If you had an equal amount I might understand your opinion more.

"Game itself is mediocre" In what way? Thats a very broad based statement.

They are both very different from one another. I play both. Both have their positives and negitives. There are lots of games that are complete junk out there, GW doesn't even come close to falling down. On any level.
