Question: Leveling up your skill trees.

Hey guys, my friend was asking me questions about ESO and I am doing my best to help him, but he asked me a question that I also would like to know the answer to.

So, as a templar (dedicated healer) I only put points into the healing tree of the class. (there are 3 trees).

My friends question is:  If you put say...1 point into each tree (using 3 points total) will the leveling of all 3 trees overall be slower because you have "3 trees" leveling, versus if you only put points into 1 tree?

Or...do the "trees"/skills only level when you actively use the ability from that tree?  (Example:  I use my "Instant Heal" ability 100 times, so only my "insta heal" levels? Versus my other heals in the same tree not leveling because I am not using them actively?)

Or...do simply using a skill in any tree help the tree as a whole level?

Any explanation/information would be great! Sorry if my post is a little discombobulated - word wise.
