I don't know about "credit" per se -- who's counting? -- but I do know in open world areas where I have done a lot of drive-by healing I have gotten "credit" for kills... as measured by having the right to loot the dead mobs. You don't have to be grouped in that situation to get "credit".
I have no clue as to how that determination is made in game...
In a dungeon, I was always too busy healing and running away from mobs to really worry about who got credit for kills. Thankfully, I could heal folks (AoE) without facing them, because invariably the DPS guys don't generate enough aggro to hold the mobs and tanks can't -- apparently -- generate aggro at all.
...at least that has been my experience... to include my own tank. Melee classes SUCK in this game.
