It plays nothing like an Elder Scrolls game. Most of the design "sacrifices" they made "in order to make the game work as an MMO" were completely unnecessary, as other games have shown how to do things like level scaling, dynamic world content, etc... with in the MMO framework.

It's a full box price + Subscription MMO, even though that business model has proven a failure for new MMO titles for at least the last half decade. Subscription Models have become the "fleece the suckers before we transition to the F2P model" stage of the MMO life cycle.

I've been around the genre for a long time and I've been on this site for a decade. I've seen the same cycle repeat over and over again on games like this. Initial success, gushing reviews that ignore or downplay all the flaws, people professing that this will be their long term game; by month three most will jump ship, cancel their subscriptions, pretend they always knew the game was going no where and trash it on the forums.

I found absolutely nothing special about the game, and was actually very disappointed that we finally get an Elder Scrolls MMO, only to have the developers fail to deliver a title that does the RPG franchise justice. The Elder Scrolls wrapper on a mediocre MMORPG does nothing to aid the game's long term prospects. SWTOR was a slightly better game that did it's i.p. a lot more justice and most of us know how that turned out.

As long as people keep throwing money at games like this, the genre will continue to evolve at a snails pace.

    Its sad but its true!

"I know it’s not the sandbox some hoped for, and I know some can’t get past the MMO-isms that Zenimax had to put onto the IP, but I wish they could put those all aside and just play this MMORPG." No, I'm not going to just play it because it's an MMORPG. With that mind set I might as well play a marathon of all the other MMORPG's that are out there.

I wish they could put those MMO-isms aside that Zenimax thought they had to put onto the IP and instead innovated to put sandbox elements into the game to make all elder scroll fans happy.

No way! See, had no clue about that.  Thanks!

Also, if you are in a group, you can travel to the wayshrine closest to your group  member regardless if you have been there or not I believe. It doesn't cost anything to do that.

Also, to some of the comments about being paid to advertise, it such a bunch of factless nonsense, so unless you have proof that the site is paid to give a score, STFU. If anything sites get more hits for when they criticize a hyped game, like the ridiculous Forbes articles as an example. You can see that by the threads here. Negative threads go on for pages and pages getting more advertising than a video showing what you can do in a game that another member will post.

One of the things I always loved about the single player TES games was the sheer level of character build customization but I always got a little sad since I could never really share them with others or test their viability in group based scenarios.  ESO has fulfilled that desire.  Sometimes I actually forget that I'm playing an MMO and I'm just destroying the mobs of Tamriel and I just happen to be surrounded by other people when I do it- and I get to do it with that insane amount of character customization.  I'm loving this game so far.  Can't wait to see what the future holds for it!

The thing is, everyone wants to get paid and get loot from doing mundane things. I like that ESO keeps your ego in check. You'll be broke, but do more than just kill mobs and you'll be fine. Do some storylines, craft, something. Keep in mind that you're asking for GOLD for doing nothing. LOL

This is a fantastic MMO. I like feeling a bit weak. Because I'm imagining that when things start to roll, you'll feel great. I put most of my points into crafting, and I'm struggling a little. But I like the struggle. Epic is waaaay down the line for me and that's ok. I never liked MMO's that made things easy. Cheap items that silly mobs carry selling for more than a few gold/coin? Why does that make sense? It actually bugs me that mobs that wouldn't carry a weapon otherwise still drop greatswords and such. LOL But that's just me.

ESO is bringing adventure back. I'm level 12 and have barely seen half of the Daggerfall starting map. Glenumbra I believe? The game just FEELS like it's going to deliver awesomeness. But first, I have to prove I'm worthy. THAT is an adventure right there.
