As pointed out by our users, Sony Online Entertainment has trademarked the site and name "H1Z1", a possible nod at the earlier news that SOE was working on a zombie-themed MMO. According to a Twitter post by SOE's CEO John Smedley, the game will be revealed today at 5:00 pm PST (8:00 pm EST) and that folks will be able to play it "fully" in the very near future.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Sounds like a strain of avian flu that caused zombie...ism. Surely it's not that though, that would be...Heh.
Feel like if this is true they are about 10 years too late to the zombie fad.

If it does turn out to be a zombie game... then....
Hahaha my thoughts exactly.

This is true, fads are quite cyclical. If the game comes out in 2020 maybe zombies will be popular again

I am loving the audio track on the website. spooky.
As long as they can keep the mood set properly who cares what the underlying theme is!?!?
Well I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but I can't even stand the thought of another zombie themed game. The market is already saturated with them, regardless of mood.
Not knocking anyone who enjoys them by any means, I just can't do zombies anymore. There are far scarier things in the universe than shambling corpses.

Ah yes, the zombie soap opera, that show was actually what finally killed it entirely for my friends and I. I'm glad you are still enjoying it, but i just can't do the rehashed zombie story again

While the market does have a lot of Zombie themed titles, there are few that really offer a proper survival aspect, as well as overall decent package. The closest I can think of is SOD even that game is more of an arcadeish thing than actual survival horror.

Zombie games only really work when the danger is immediate, the risk is hair-raising, and the fear is palpable.
Same is true for zombie movies and TV.
Once the zombies get to "farm mode" where they are no longer really that much of a threat, the zombies just become a backdrop for the other problems faced by say food scarcity or disease or hostile humans etc.
Combining RPG mechanics that make you a really proficient zombie slayer, safe houses to store gear and/or more softcore penalties for death etc. really removes the immediate danger, risk, and fear.
If you are going to make a game more focused on the PvP aspect (survivors versus other survivors) there are much better genres to paint as a backdrop than zombies.
This is true, maybe I'll give it a shot if I can find the time for another game in my life heh. The survival part in a post apocalyptic scenario is really what always did it for me, not the zombies themselves. It's why I'm such a big fan of the Fallout series.

You'll have to forgive my skepticism. Spiritual successor to swg? By smedley? Yeah.
I couldnt agree more! Not to mention its possible that whatever turned humans into zombies also turned every other creature into them. Then it becomes more of a fallen earth with SWG mechanics.
All speculation of course but it could be done in a palatable way for to me. Who am i kidding im desprate for something..
Government is not reason; it is not eloquent; it is force. Like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master.

Apparently you didn't read the very short tweet where Smedley said they already are working on it and the article saying it will be playable in the near future. So I guess they must be making money.
Same here.
I'm hoping for a true Hardcore Survival Triple-A Zombie game. For a genre that's so popular we sure haven't seen much besides mediocre ripoffs, mods & random indie titles. Someone needs to take this genre to the next level with a quality product; do so and I promise you your investors wallets will once again be fattened.
(I'm not saying that indie titles can't be quality products, often they are. They are often quite small in scale and very niche... as if Zombie games couldn't be more niche.)
