MMO: Is it worth it? Survey inside

BulldozeBulldoze Member UncommonPosts: 115

Hi guys,

I'm currently carrying out a research project that  is probing into the world of massively multiplayer games and the skills we develop and acquire  from playing them. I've put together a survey to gather data for this project and I'd appreciate you having a go at it!

It's a pretty short survey that will only take a couple of minutes of your time to complete. The questions are relatively straight forward but kinda fun to answer so it's not a drag

I'll post the link below for anyone interested in taking part.

Feel free to feedback any advice or criticism in regards to the questions and format as this is the first attempt and I'm by no means experienced in research projects.

Thanks In advance

It's just  a college project where I wanted to take a closer look at what we achieve / or don't whilst playing MMO's, and if said skills are transferrable to real life situations. Should the populsr public outlook that gaming is a waste of time be cast away and the industry viewed in a different light now that e-sports is on the rise and could that be considered a viable career path? One that would be encouraged the same way a child who's good at football would, for example

Personally I feel like I have honed skills I already had and acquired entirely new ones in the last decade of gaming with friends. I just wanted to get  a feel of what fellow mmo'ers had to say on the matter. Take a look at the google docs survey if you like, it's only short

    Done.

    Good luck with your research!

I find the idea that "MMO playing might be 'worth it' because it's educational" to be somewhere between baffling and humorous.  Good luck with the survey though.
I want to help design and develop a PvE-focused, solo-friendly, sandpark MMO which combines crafting, monster hunting, and story.  So PM me if you are starting one.

Filled it out.  Good luck with your paper.  Hopefully you get enough to have some data to use.

Done! It was nice, short and sweet survey :)

A note I'd like to point out, though. Players are very different today than 10 or more years ago. The skills I learned and honed that could carry over to real life are not very present any more. The majority of those skills were about dealing with people, the good bad, and indifferent aspects. Twitch/Action combat skills I guess have some uses, but personal interaction is almost null and void with many, many players. It still happens, do not get me wrong, but in the same amount as previously. That is weird as there are so many players today to interact with. One would think that the chances for interaction would be greater, not lesser.

Also, I am only playing one MMO right now, Wizard101. It uses turn based combat where strategy plays a HUGE role, instead of reflexes/reaction times. It is more about picking which spell in your deck to cast when.
"Can I take 2 more hits before healing, or should I heal now?"
"Does the player in the first slot need shields or healing?"
"Do I take the chance that I can take out 1 of the opponents now, or do something more defensive?"

That is the kind of strategy I appreciate in video games :)

Again, thanks for the short and sweet survey. Best of luck on it :)

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

I love MMOs with that kind of strategy (well, technically tactics) too. :) Whenever you finish Wizard101 you should definitely try Dofus or Wakfu unless you already have.

Dofus and Wakfu. I have not looked into these games. I'll give them a peek. Thanks :)

Welcome. :) The two are from the same company, Wakfu is the newer one. They have variations on the same graphical style and the same combat system, which is pretty much unique among MMOs for being tactical turn-based combat. If you want the most complex combat, pick a class that summons things.

    Bulldoze,

Regarding your last question, can I assume that by "relationships" your referring to friendships and not only intimate relationships?

    Cheers.

    Hi Rhino,

Yes I meant friendships as well as intimate relations, I should have been  a little clearer on that!

Massive thanks to you guys who have taken the survey and commented in here.

Just curious, would any of you be interested answering interview questions?

I would be sending the questions to you for completion. It would be in the same vein as the survey but more in depth and pulling on your opinion for qualitative data to bolster my primary research.

Ideally it would be best if I had interviewees from both sides of the argument - I've learned loads from MMO's / I've wasted too much time on MMO's, kinda thing.

Drop a line in here if you'd be interested in doing it, I'll start writing up some questions.

Also, if you think there are questions you would ask on the survey or the interview for this research, feel free to let me know as I'm new to this and fully open to ideas!

Thanks again to those who took part so far

Yeah I'll do this later when I get home. Can't access google drive from my work PC so it'll have to wait :(

I cut and pasted this from the result screen I was given after taking the survey... not sure if it'll work.

If you're going to ask all people interviewed the same questions, is there any reason not to just do it up as another survey?  Though preferably with bigger text-entry fields?

Yeah that would make sense. I'm not sure how I'm going to do it yet, might try do it via some kind of instant messenger so the questions can be more spontaneous and tailored to that specific interviewee

That's cool.  Is there a way to see the write-in responses from people who answered Other to the questions with the graphs?  Those don't seem to be included in the results.

For me, the write in answers appear at the bottom, all in a mess. Each one is highlighted in gray, so you can separate the answers by looking at where the highlight is. Did this not appear on your page?

Other than that, you can not decipher who said what :)

I'm seeing two batches of answers at the bottom which correspond to the two "essay" questions near the end of the survey.  I am not seeing anything related to the "Other" choices for questions near the beginning of the survey.
