I havent found a solid MMO lately (along with some friends) and some of the old stuff we miss from games like EQ and FFXI are the big reliance on groups for a lot of things, Crafting and trading having a lot of meaning and being very community dependant, being able to just grind on mobs in a group and get exp just as much as quests (i really hate how so many MMos make quests far and away the best way to level and make it pointless to do it in groups)
One of the other major things is just making use of the open world. Open dungeons, NMs, public events..ect. Too many games are just filled to the brim with instanced everything.
SO is this game more like some of the oldschool MMOs (and i yes i know not everything will be, some changes are good) or yet another quest hub, solo fest with heavy instanced low man endgame?

Finally someone posting about Archeage.
To answer your questions: Yes! This game is VERY group oriented, you and your guild can build castles/ships/homes together and the more people working on it the faster it gets done it can take a long time to do it alone so if you have friends you will always be at an advantage.
There is trading in Archeage, you get tradepacks and you need to travel to other continents and areas to hand in your packages to get gilded coins (Used for blueprints, mounts, Ships and a lot more!). Adding onto that. you can be attacked and have your tradepacks stolen, thus making trading in a big group almost a must.
No grinding mobs like crazy does not give more XP than questing. You can however craft, Fish and treasure hunt and you can level up that way (It is still slower than straight questing). BUT! all the best gear comes from crafting, a level 30 with crafted gear will destroy a level 50 with quest gear.
Source: Been playing Archeage Russian version for 2 months. I recently stopped because NA version is coming and i saw no point on burning myself out.
sort of a neco bump, but does the game have world bosses (or named monsters) for lots of levels? or is this just for end levels? Also are the world bosses claimed or open to all (which i dont mind some, but it gets zerged all the time and loses its meaning quick)
It may be obvious but im just looking for some of the features i loved from stuff like FFXI that i just dont see in games these days...they all seem to be "quest til cap and run instances all day" and if there is open world stuff it has to be done so that "everybody wins". Its a big reason i couldnt stand the new FFXIV: AAR...and sadly that stuff was in 1.2x before they scrapped everything.
This is important info for me as well.
I didn't like the Guildwars 2 and Rift versions of crowd participation looting. I am wondering how ArcheAge handles loot rights.
Specifically......
1 if you hit a mob first and someone comes along and gets the last hit, do they get to loot or you?
2 if you come along and some group is killing a tough mob and you jump in just to help and they all die right before you get the last couple hits, do you get to loot?
3 if you are in a small group taking on a tough mob for a few minutes and a large group comes along after those 2 minutes but does the most damage, do they get the loot?
4 when in a group can you switch loot options based on how the group wants?
5 when in a raid can you switch loot rights based on how the raid wants?
what are the loot options available if so?
Also is there meaningful loot in the game?
Examples......
1 is there some blue prints for crafting that drop?
2 is there special ingredients for crafting that drop?
3 are there weapons or armor that drop?
4 Does currency drop?
5 Any unique stuff drop off specific named mobs?
I saw a video of a person opening a book of portals and opening a portal to a specific spot and walking through it. Is that something you can craft or something you gain access to or can purchase?
There are world bosses. I've seen them at all level ranges. When a creature is tagged, it belongs to the group that hit it first as far as I know.
A neat thing about the game is that you can also attempt to claim world bosses and use them as pets.
