Piers Anthony Apprentice/Adept world where you have fantasy in phaze world and science fiction in Proton world. You also have The Game in Proton world where you can PvP.
You also have several other worlds by Piers Anthony that would make good IP's IMHO. Xanth and the Battle Circle world.
========================== The game is dead not, this game is good we make it and Romania Tv give it 5 goat heads, this is good rating for game.
IPs are tricky. Single Player game IPs do not seem to translate well to MMOs, so no single player game IPs for me, thanks.
Another direction would be books. These can be tricky, too, as most books center around a single (or group of) protagonist(s) against some grand evil. It would have to be from a book's IP that centered around the world.
From books I've read, the following are the worlds I'd like to adventure in. Midkemia (Ray Feist) A few counties close together, quite a few factions, another continent not much is known about (expansion material) and rift gates that travel to other worlds, making new material nearly endless.
Wheel of Time (Robert Jordan) Another land nicely detailed, a "separate" dimension to adventure in, a few factions, but the magic system is very restrictive.
Ring World (Larry Niven - I always confuse myself and think "David" Niven...) What a world! That's all I can say about this one
Tinker (Wen Spencer) Present day earth gets "merged" with another realm called "Elfhome." Pittsburgh, PA is trapped on Elfhome. Pittsburgh has technology while Elfhome has magic. There are possibilities for infinite other worlds, too. The magic system is good. Technology exists and reacts with Magic.
Also, I'd like to add (from another thread I started) Traveller, the old tabletop RPG game for a great Sci-Fi based IP

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse. - FARGIN_WAR

Xanth would be interesting one I agree,
I enjoyed how everyone had just one ability, but it was unique to everyone else.
Not sure if anyone has mentioned David Eddings - The Belgariad.
has an interesting background lore giving plenty of variety in potential content and few restrictions for an mmo. it would just be a matter of finding a veteran company to give the development license to.
Mafia. Not sure whether the factions would be mafia v mafia or lawmen v mafia or maybe a 3 faction game. The game would be set in a prohibition era setting. No rules about historic facts must hold true but nothing ridiculous. Ex. you can blow up the statue of Liberty or steal the gold reserves but you cant have lightsabers and rayguns. It have to stay somewhat believable for the era.
I want a generic classic fantasy setting, with elves and dwarves and other races, that isnt limited by any existing IP, or more precisely an IP of the MMO company itself and thus under their full control.
Kind of like EverQuest, Vanguard, WoW, etc.
To me, MMOs are a different kind of game. They are not something one plays for 1-3 months and move on, like with any singleplayer.
And, just for the record: even singleplayer games based on an IP tend to be rather weak.

They could. Some IPs would be a good basis. But the problem is:
(a) An extensive IP like for example Conan the Barbarian is no simple matter to implement. Thus developer took tons of shortcuts, resulting in a very mediocre game that in no way showed the potential of the IP, but instead was some graphic demo plus a lot of gore, with some sort of game attached to it.
(b) Having a premade IP not done for a MMO means you have some third party that potentially intereferes with really EVERYTHING you do. For example when Bioware was still Bioware and not EA just yet, "Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic" was a great title from them. However, they had to strip for example the [lesbian] Juhani romance from it.
So yeah, in real circumstances, I would much rather have an selfmade IP that the MMO developer team can expand on at their own speed, and not limited by some crazy third party.
I would love to see a Magic: The Gathering mmorpg, where in addition to armor and crafting drops, mobs and bosses also have a chance of dropping cards, which can be used to make decks. Endgame would consist of PVP, PVE, and using cards obtained from those 2 to play classic Magic card matches.

Wild, Wild West set in the late 1800's.
Either could have some Steam Punk elements, especially the Wild, Wild West.
Those worlds with a mix of steampunk, jules verne, and the like could be very interesting. Better yet, the late 19th century in both civilized and rustic settings with all the aforementioned trappings.
Raymond Feist's Riftworld saga setting would be a great backdrop. While there are stories with centralized heroes the setting itself lends itself well to an open setting.
The world of Avatar: The Last Airbender could be great. Another world that lends itself to decentralized heroes and antics. The premise of the world would lend itself equally well to pvp and pve.
Traveller/MegaTraveller - This IP has so much possibility.
I realize some of these IPs have existing muds/games, but none I think do them justice.
So long as it's not "Oliver Twist, the MMO", I think a game in a Victorian setting could work very well.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
Originally posted by laserit Game of Thrones would make an awesome IP
also Dune, cause both are Dystopias, one fantasy and one sci-fi.
also both have a background of war and lore. Also for once i wanna see an MMO where the players live the events and dont create them. I imagine the events in Westeros could be something living story ala GW2 : )
