Another poster using a broken VGcharts website for speculation and lies. This is new and different.
Nah, same poster with his new account just for this....starting to think the ESO forums on this site are only maybe 15 different people with multiple accounts.
Funny i said the same thing yesterday and even reported a guy who was posting on multiple accounts to boost his own opinion. How he got caught? he forgot to remove the raptr signature from his alt account which was same name as his main. Busted!!!
So yeah its a fact that people use multiple accounts to make an illussion that everyone is agreeing with them.
So almost 3 weeks after launch most fanboys are now less optimistic about ESO sales, they forgot about 5m acc or 10m subs etc. ZEN remains silent, most reviews gives mediocre score, many ppl fleeing already and everyone understands that something is not going well. I m not saying that those things must have an impact to someone who loves the game, but it should to those who shouted all this time about huge sales, records etc.
i m saying again, i m not against who ever likes the game, but to those fanboys who were shouting all the time in forums etc.
Thx for that proof. Now we can say with 100% certainty that vgcharts is completely bugged. They list sales for 2013 and 2014 for STWOR, although it turned F2P in 2012. I don't now what they count, but most probably not box/game sales.
FYI, just went around the web and you can still buy the boxed game and receive disks. Here is the thing free gamers can't wrap their head around, even though the game is called F2P, you are expected to pay for your gaming time. And some people choose to buy the game even if it is so called F2P.
Listen it's Free to Play for a while. But if you are going to play for some time, you are expected to buy something regularly.
Pardon any spelling errors
Konfess your cyns and some maybe forgiven Boy: Why can't I talk to Him? Mom: We don't talk to Priests. As if it could exist, without being payed for. F2P means you get what you paid for. Pay nothing, get nothing. Even telemarketers wouldn't think that. It costs money to play. Therefore P2W.

Originally posted by ohioastro We already have had these discussions here, it's documented that this number is not correct, and continuing to present it as true is just not acceptable. It is not apples to apples because they update their numbers to reflect new information, so if Zen announces a million digital downloads tomorrow their number will be changed to 1.25 million.
If that was the case then GW2 numbers should be at least 3.5 million which was the latest number Arenanet advanced or a minimum of 3 million which was the last number given in a NCSoft conference call.
If one checks the numbers for GW2 and SWTOR it says retail.

If its not the game that's bad its the sales, or even the forum! Yes I totally believe the OP was a genuine guy just sitting there and he suddenly decided to join MMOROG and post these figures.
I think what we need is a leaner poster badge to highlight for posters how these guys pop up after every new MMO release and then disappear a few weeks later.

Per that same source, Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls sold 500k copies. Blizzard recently said it sold more than 3+ million..
Althought there is defintely the possibilty that ESO didn't sell as much as SWTOR and GW2 take VGChartz numbers with a grain of salt. They have D3: Reaper of Souls sales listed at 500K when we know it sold more than 3 million. They list WoW:BC and WoW:WotLK sales at 700k+ but we know it sold more than 5 million in a week. I don't know why people take their numbers with any credence, they don't even reflect half of Skyrims's actual sales in their numbers.

VGcharts only estimate retail sales.
It is true that VGcharts is not a reliable way of tracking total game sales.
But pretty much all current big PC games sell tons of digital pre orders and copies with their alpha/beta access and this and that plus the fact that digital copies is just more convenient.
So one can compare retail trends (and I really doubt that ESO percentage of digital sales is that higher than for example GW2 percentage of digital sales).

What does this have to do with anything? You still didn't tackle why they got games like BC, WotLK and RoS completely wrong?

That's just more speculation. I could just as easily say I expect ESO digital sales to be double GW2 digital sales, and neither one of us could prove it. I don't really care if it does outsell GW2 as long as I'm having fun playing ESO. 2 years of begging Anet to deliver content and provide an actual guild wars experience rather than Guild WoW was enough for me. I love the franchise, but I just don't know how they are going to pull this one out.
I'm getting off topic here, but my point stands strong, no one knows digital sales numbers because they haven't been released yet and any kind of speculation is quite foolish imo.

The goal of an MMO should not be to peak like SWTOR and GW2 during launch, and then go on a free fall downfall a month after. I think this will happen with ESO too, but it will be hard to beat the SWTOR/GW2 downfall that happened within a month.
Why even care if it sells more or less? Don't you have more important things to do in your life?
If ESO sold about 50k copies, then I would still enjoy the game
To find out the populace within the game, beside going into the game and look it up your self is also, can be by looking up the sales margin, to have the idea of how many people doing the game.

I prefer a game you can actually play in the realm v realm and not que for one hour to play.
gw2 was a pve side game of course they might sell big time but you couldn't play WvW because there was too many pve players and every single time there was a new pve event through WvW you had 1 hour que because all PVE players wanted inside WvW.
I remember a raid a year ago one day my clan could run 35 guys in WvW no problem no que at all to any WvW maps.
next day arenanet announce WvW event for pve players and we have 1 hour que.
the results? from being one of the best servers every single guild and WvW players abandon that server and next week when event gone all pve players asked some whispered me ''where did everyone go???''
now this kills servers and players quit the game this wont happen in ESO so the game can stay strong for a long long while.
(note that most gw2 guilds have quit the game pga those reason and areananet fail to deliver....)
It's just wishful thinking that this game sold a great amount of copies at this point on PC. There would already be some kind of announcement. My opinion is that, if they ever do release official numbers, it'll be post console release. At that point they might be able to get somewhat close to reaching the PC sales of other previously released AAA MMORPGs and the number might actually be considered a marketing boon to them instead of the lackluster number they are likely working with now.

hahaha interesting point, it'll be a 'miracle' if ESO do beat swtor and gw2. See what I did there? Miracle? Because Diehard ESO fans are like those extreme religious people, with their blind faith.
ugh who cares about numbers tbh gw2 have the pve side while eso have the realm side with epic fights.
gw2 massive lag jesus most guilds have left the game already because of the lags and the problem to que to WvW.
while in eso there is no problem with lags or queing......
if eso stay strong and stay like this they will survive gw2 with each because atm gw2 run with pve quality in WvW= dead game.
I don't know, I played WvW when GW2 at its peak, the combat system was fun as it lasted. I never had any lag problem with the WvW, its true that GW2 is dying now though.
You speaks of eso theres no problem with lags? watch this
Why even care if it sells more or less? Don't you have more important things to do in your life?
If ESO sold about 50k copies, then I would still enjoy the game
Stop making sense, that never helps here...
But anyways having initial small sales might actually be a good thing, I rather have that than TORs massive quits after a month. I have the feeling that MMO would do better if they start smaller and slowly grows instead of having every MMO fan trying it out in the launch. And considering ESOs launch shape the game have a lot better chance with getting new players mouth to mouth over time.
Still, nothing for the ESO fans to celebrate but don't be so soon judging the game, Eve started out with a really small crowd and grew pretty big with time.

The point was SWTOR and GW2 sold well but flopped within a month. ESO can either not sell as well as those two and flop just as hard as those MMOs. Or actually sell less and rise because of console sales. Regardless, the next couple of months should be interesting.
Edit: Slightly off topic but the sad part of the chart is WildStar has so little interest it doesn't even register on Google as a Online Game.
While i made this post for some certain fanboys, many more answered. If you want my opinion about vgchartz i would say that you may not have some exact numbers but a good % of them or a trend for the game.
If i was to say what really matters for a game, retention is my answer. Whats the good of selling millions, if none stays after the free month.
Once again i ll say that i feel happy about ppl who like and play a game. I don't care also for myself, about reviews, sales numbers etc when i like a game. I simply play it. I just don't like blind lovers and fanboys run around forums and spread misinformation.

Yeah, that must be why the wait for WvW is about twice as big as a year ago. Sure, my server did lose some really good commanders which will be missed but the actual numbers who played have been pretty stable for a long time.
However, worrying about ESOs lag is a bit predetermined, most new MMOs lags a lot at launch and usually get optimized after a few months. Annoying in the beginning though.

There seems to be this assumption that MMORPGs must have a specific life cycle, but where did this assumption come from? Not only that, where does the idea that SWToR and GW2 aren't maintaining this interest coming from?
Overlay GW2 and SWToR with Ultima Online and Everquest.
The SWToR curve dwarfs the others. The drop off is only so dramatic because initial update is so dramatic. The ongoing interest in GW2 and SWToR is higher than those older games. So where did the idea that games need to maintain a ridiculous amount of interest come from? Look at the same graph with World of Warcraft in there.
That actually surprises me. I expected there to be at least a little bit of interest in WildStar at this point. At it's core its going to be a good game, even if it is just a clone of popular mechanics from other big name MMO's.
Currently Playing: ESO and FFXIV Have played: You name it If you mention rose tinted glasses, you better be referring to Mitch Hedberg.
Anyway, ignoring WoW, interest in MMORPGs, including these new games that supposedly don't hold interest, is increasing over time.
Well that is the MMO trend. Big launches and massive flops a month later. It is a shame and doesn't bode well for the future of the genre. Eve and WoW are the only two games that saw increases after launch, the rest saw declines including massive declines in (GW2/SWTOR).
Meanwhile games like LoL and Minecraft show growth. There is definitely issue here. I wonder which MMO will break that mold.
PS: Google doesn't track data before 2004 so the UO and EQ comparison is invalid.
