I don't like to be negative. But as a current player I see this as a step backwards. I'll wait until they reveal what patron status gives to pass judgment. But one of the perks of this game was not needing a sub to get the whole game experience. If I suddenly have to sub to feel like more than a shmuck I will be very disappointed.
I'm hoping the patron status just adds some exp boosts or something. If they make you become a patron to have the same experience I currently have, then that's just messed up.
This really is strange. $10 b2p game without sub goes to freemium with sub?
The *only* reason i can see for this was if Trion was offering something like SoE all access with Rift, AA, and Defiance shared patron status.
But then they say thats not going to be the case (at least for now).
Its baffling, especially considering how meaningless Rift patron status is, that that wasnt their first thought: to tie all 3 games (and Trove) into one package. Trion isnt the only company that has a themepark, an alpha sandbox/sandpark, an alpha voxel game, and a mmo shooter.
I think they needed a reason to add a subscription and probably a little more aggressive cash shop. I know I never felt much of any need to buy anything in the shop. Now that it's "free" they can offer some more premium stuff in the shop and justify it by not having a barrier to entry.
The only problem, is for all of us players who paid full retail at launch + the season pass etc. We are kinda getting the finger from Trion.

Thats why it seems odd. And its not like the b2p was a big barrier of entry. the game is routinely under 10 bucks and has a trial. Its not going to bring in much new blood and it will piss off loyal customers.

Well, I'm willing to bet they weren't making enough money as it was. So this might be their last attempt to bring it in the green. That, of course, is pure speculation. Like I said, until they reveal what the patron status gets you this might not matter. I know when TERA was F2P their optional sub was literally just stuff on top of what you got for the normal sub before F2P. So if you didn't sub you got the exact same experience you had when it was P2P.
Wow folks the game is already 5 bucks on steam. Now its going ftp, I give it till this time next year to be sunset. After reading how season 2 of the tv show going to have so much change. There is only so much bs you can dump on your customer base before they get mad and leave.

I kinda doubt that. This sounds like they want a sub from the serious players while getting in a bunch of bungee players that jump in and out of the game so it seems more populated at low levels.
With the current price of the game this just can't be a good thing for the players. If they just wanted to sell XP pots they could have added it to the game anyways with minimal complaints, other B2P games do it after all. With F2P and a "voluntary" sub they will sell useful stuff or access to part of the game.
I never could help but feel like the game needed something more to combat. Maybe a cover mechanic or something. It always felt like a demo of concepts rather than a complete product.
Originally posted by nolic1 This is great news for Trion and players who have wanted to really get into the game. I know a lot of people who will flame them for this but I really do not care. This game is so much better now with the new difficulty they put in with Arch Tech DLC that the Hellbugs are not so much run and gun some will even one shot you which makes it all the more fun. So if you have not played it in a while now is a great time to go check out the new difficulty they added and see how much more fun the game can be on a none easy mode play.
I wonder if SciFi had a word in this decision. In case Trion has to give them a percentage of whatever the game generates, it may have been too little.
So they thought they'd give it one more chance to make some money and if this move doesn't work, scrap it altogether soon after S2 ends.
Originally posted by Reizla Great. We bought the game as BUY2play, now it gets FREE2play and we gotta pay to enjoy the game to the fullest? Kinda feel screwed over there...
It was already like that from the start! With those stupid keys to unlock loot with roulette gambling scheme!
It was one of the main reasons I quit that turd of a game! Paying Premium price for a very mediocre game, get a tiny map to play on with very short story, have loot locked inside Lock boxes. Mehhh..... getting fed up With these kind of money grab practices.
I played this a lot on PS3 and briefly on the PC due to tech issues. Anyway it was fun & as usual most people seemed to buy a roller from the cashshop. This new format should get Trion some new sales come June 4th. I received an email outlining some new upcoming changes based on if you already own Defiance or will be a new recruit: Character slots 4 vs 2 Loadouts 5 vs 2 Ark Keycode Maximum 75 vs 50 Inventory Slots 70 vs 35 *Special Bonus for already owning DEFI 1,000 Arkforge to refine & upgrade weapons 30 day Paradise Patron Pass
Alright so you will already notice the microtransactions ticking in based on just the above info. If you really want to play find it for cheap now and you'll probably save a few bucks if you'll want a few veteran perks. Anyway I wish Trion well with f2p since this is probably the only way to keep the rollers moving in Paradise.

I doubt it's anything so complicated. Trion just appears to be migrating their portfolio over to a F2P selection. I think it's safe to assume that most of their new stuff will be F2P out the gate. I wouldn't be surprised to see them doing the ArcheAge thing, though, and charge for early access. It basically makes the games B2P for anyone who is impatient.
It was (and currently is) Buy to Play. Meaning you purchase the game, but there's no subscription. The upcoming change just eliminates the initial purchase price entirely.

Before F2P: Buy box game, play as much as you want.
After F2P: Play the demo for free. If you want to play the full game, buy the box AND pay a sub.

Yay, I want to play. Finally FREE!
Brenics ~ Just to point out I do believe Chris Roberts is going down as the man who cheated backers and took down crowdfunding for gaming.

Hey, if you don't like this you could always spend 150 and play ArcheAge before it too becomes f2p.
I can't help but feel someone at Trion is laughing right now.
