Can I ask a very important question ?

For now I'm playing Elders Scrolls Online, so I'm not really in the market yet to do much studying of any other mmo.

However, I'm catching wind of this new mmo called ArcheAge.  It seems to be getting good hype, so I watched a few Youtubes and is seems great, like a long awaited Old School mmo ( Thank God, finally ).

Now my major problem :  ITS GONNA BE " FREE-TO-PLAY "...... Are you guys ok with that ?....If this is to be a long awaited mmo that is meant to be played for years, building characters, belonging to Guilds, making a name for your self, You know Old School stuff.  How do you expect to be nickel and dimed with a cash shop.  How are you expecting to be playing along side others that are gimped because they did not buy the same stuff or even pay for anything ?.....F2P killed the community for EQ1,EQ2,LOTRO,D&D Online and many others.....For the making of an Old School MMO, this action could be a major problem and can easily destroy any chances of long term game play....A developer can make the ultimate mmo, and a marketing company could come in and wipe it out with greed......Is everyone OK with this ?.....Am I missing something ?

I literally despise f2p for the same reasons you do.  I think its always a p2w cash shop BS, HOWEVER archeage has proven so far to be the only exception to this.  The only thing subscribers really get is the ability to own land (houses castles etc), which literally provides no battlefield advantage in the game.  It's a really good game, I'm hoping though they are ready for the hordes of goldselling spammers that will be there on launch day because if its happens in every p2p game, its going to be rampant in a f2p one.

    Remember :

    - Neverwinter, very hyped, fan's couldn't wait.  Yet the game went underground in a matter of weeks because of a cash shop.

    - Allods Online, was to be a mirror image of World of Warcraft, fans couldn't wait. Yet the Cash Shop was soooo bad that it was an instant failure

Cash Shop marketers can kill any game !........N one will know what lurks behind the minds of a marketer, BE CAREFULL !!!

Agreed, yet don't forget all games are made to be profitable, so lets not kid ourselves.

Free to play or pay to play either way you can be tricked out of your money.

Look at WoW, not real update in a year, yet people are still shelling out 15 bucks a month to play it, why?  For what are they paying that money for?  What content are they getting?

Idk what you're talking about.  I was never once ever hyped for a perfect world affiliated game, or allods.  But yes the cash shops can kill games and we don't know what will be in Archeages as of now. However we do know that the subscription option is actually good.

So their will be a subscription option ?
  • hockeyplayrhockeyplayr Member UncommonPosts: 604
Keep in mind it is being done by Trion.  Rift's cash shop is the least intrusive I have ever seen and there will also be a subscription option to help carry the weight of the f2pers.

Yes, there will be a "Patron Status" for ArcheAge that basically translates to a subscription model.  It unlocks more of the game's features for you such as buying a plot of land, building a house, and farming.  You've probably seen 'Patron Status' mentioned in the various Founder Packs currently being sold on the official Trion/ArcheAge website.

Very true.  Despite my personal burnout period for RIFT, I give TRION a lot of credit in the areas of high quality content, thoroughly examined and fairly based monetization models, and continuous effort.  I'm sure whatever deal they've worked out between XL Games and themselves, it's NOT going to be a GPotato/Allods debacle.

TRION has managed to establish a good name with a decent reputation among a virtual sea of game developers/publishers trying to get a piece of the MMO pie.

If they can make the cash shops no more invasive than Rifts, this game should be the standard for all game business models.

    - I don't mind that games that have an expensive alpha, I'm not into playing broken games anyhow, alphas should be $500 to join and betas should be at least $100 in all f2p games. Alpha/beta non character wipes should be an additional $1000

Considering what AA has available now, they could be making more money.

    - they will have an official launch with alpha and beta wipes though

    - this game will launch as f2p, games head in that direction anyhow, at least right from the get go players can be acclimated with the business model and know what to expect going forward.

F2p with non pay to win, non invasive cash shop - I used to hate f2p, but there is no way around it. So now I've jumped ship and I won't play a game unless it's f2p.

Well only 1% of players have beaten the last boss on heroic. So I suppose that 99% of the people are still trying to clear content. You make the content hard enough and people will strive to beat it. Not many games can actually say they have hard content.

If cash malls don't kill an MMO's economy then gold sellers will.

Wow still has a dedicated community - the older games have that, the newer games do not.

The community is player content, my friends are there so I am there, my friends are the player content. My friends are an asset that games like WoW enjoy and survive off of.

New games want player content, but to get that they have to be free to play, it doesn't make for great community, but at least community has a chance to form and there is also player content generated that is not community oriented.

Player content is different than player created content commonly found in sandbox games. - Player content is my friend who texts me and wants to do a heroic dungeon I've done a million times already, but I still want to chill with my buds and help them out too so I join in.

This is true but you can't exactly consider archeage a brand new game among all those others.  Archeage already has fans here and fans in other areas because they know of it since its been out in KR and open beta in RU.
