A fun experiment to revive a classic!

Years ago I started playing MMO's by trying out some MUDs . I stuck with one for a few years before UO came out and then made the switch to the graphic-MMO world.  I just found out that the MUD I started on is still up and running, although, it's empty.

This is perfect for this experiment!

I want to see if we can get people from here and other places to repopulate the MUD once again and basically start the world from scratch. Everything is live, everything is running, there's just no one connected.

The address for the Web is http://arcadia.net/MUD/ if anyone cares to check it out.

If you don't know what a MUD is, or want details on this one in general, here you go:

MUD stands for Multi User Dungeon/Domain. They are text-based, persistent RPG's that save your character's progress and lets you interact is very detailed ways with the environment.

Everything is command-based, meaning you have to type each command in manually. Although there are GUI clients that make this easier by using macros and buttons you can click instead.

It is truly an open-world: MOBs drop items, characters equip items; you die, your corpse lies helpless where you were killed; someone finds your corpse, they take what they want. Yes, this means it's full-loot and PvP is also allowed, though restricted based on level differences. (a level 50 can't attack a level 10 for instance.

Levels are based on exp, as normal. Although, the exp per level is determined by the skills you choose. You can make a character quick to level but with only a few skills at their disposal, or you can make a character that takes ages to level and has almost every skill available.

Skills advance through usage, so it's a cross between standard levels and skill advancement.

Although crafting isn't implemented, enchantments are, which could permanently modify gear in the game until it breaks or gets destroyed.

And just s slew of other details... for instance -

  • If you get attacked by a player wielding a burning sword, there's a very good chance any flammable items in your inventory will go up in smoke and be destroyed.
  • Players can cast "charm person" and control the actions of other players if they're lucky/unlucky.
  • Flaming weapons can also blind people, meaning every text-based description tuns into "Something is to the west" or "Someone hits you" instead of giving useful details.
  • Nearly any creature can be "charmed" and follow it's master... any creature form a giant to a palace guard.
  • Character need food and water for hunger and thirst
  • Hundreds of emotes and actions to choose from, some are beneficial like "sleep"
  • Diseases can weaken characters and spread to other players unless cured by magic
And it's 100% free... so if you're a fan of games like Nethack or Dwarf Fortress, you should give this one a try. This also isn't a commercial MUD like some out there, so there are no money-pits involved or monthly fees to pay. The game also hasn't advanced to the point of being impossible to start up in like some older games are (EVE, WoW, or even some other populated MUDs)
