I'm just curious. What DO people on this site think is the best?
I've gotta start off by saying Anarchy Online is my fave. The graphics are neither cartoony or cutting edge, but i think it makes up for it in sheer fun and things to do. I have been thinking of going over to WoW recently, but i'm pretty sure i'm sticking with AO. One thing i would like to see changed in AO especially is the combat system. Although at times it can be cool to whack "Q" and go have a drink while your character battles for his life, i would quite like something that involves a bit more skill, like being able to do different types of attacks by hitting different keys and doing combos.
A lot of you won't know what i'm on about, so just get on with it!

Looking forward (cautiously) to: Age of Conan, Dark Solstice, Armada Online.
Will soon try: Guild Wars
Overall: Amazed and bewhildered at the current sad state of the artform of gaming.
Ultima online is my favorite game of all time. None of the game i have played sence then have given me as much enjoyment from playing.
The game i play the most now is Joint Operation Typhonn Rising as i wait for new game to come out like Darkfall.
I gotta say my all time favorite.....
Is still SWG. Im a really big star wars fan and the game is actually quite dynamic. It has a lot of things to do that dont feel as "grindy" as most MMO's. I love the fact that the space game is kind of a departure from the ground based game in order to give you a break from each.
I have to say Imperator is looking like the next big sci fi game which is the genre I prefer. Until that time I will have to say SWG offers the most entertaining game play so far in an MMO.
Critical thinking is a desire to seek, patience to doubt, fondness to meditate, slowness to assert, readiness to consider, carefulness to dispose and set in order; and hatred for every kind of imposture.

Hmm, why you want to know THE (singular) best MMO but dump 9/10's of the games on the market today into "other" category, I'll never know. There is no best MMO, sorry. There's a best for each person but I'm sure that's not what you were looking for.
My vote goes to Asherons Call (1). Sad that it still has the best skill system and deepest game mechanics of all the newer, prettier mmos today. That's my opinion anyhow. I'll take AC: Darktide (PvP server) over any of the newer, prettier super streamlined crap today

Right this moment there is no real best. If your asking for my opinion for all time it would have to have been Original EQ. There is no question behind it it was the most successful Morg to date. Sure it was also one of the first but the fact remains SOE got damn fat off EQ.

The funny thing is, all the old games are better than the new ones. I choose UO, EQ, AC. The originals. All though some would say M59 is more of the original, but it wasn't in the golden age, so I just leave it out.
Personally, I feel UO is the best. It coveres all play styles, and quite well on each. EQ has better pvm, but pvp sucks, so I wouldn't say it's the best, but the pvm is awesome. Planetside is a great pvp game. It's also original.
All the second gen mmorpgs are too dilluted.

You left out games like EQ1,UO and DAoC which are regarded by very many long time players as the best ever.
Ultima Online.

its true. The old games are better than the new ones. mmorpgs might go in the right direction with dnl and vanguard though
