Elder Scrolls Online: Console Version Delay Confirmed by Bethesda

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Bethesda has confirmed that the console version of Elder Scrolls Online will be delayed until sometime in late 2014. The delay was explained as a way to give the development team more time to adjust the title to the unique aspects of integrating systems to a console.

We've been grateful to our fans for the wonderful response to our recent launch of The Elder Scrolls Online for PC/Mac, but we know many of you are eagerly waiting to play the game on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

We continue to work on the console versions of ESO, and game development has been progressing steadily, but we are still working to solve a series of unique problems specific to those platforms. Integrating our systems with each console manufacturer’s networks—which are both different from the PC/Mac system as well as different from each other—has been a challenging process. It has become clear that our planned June release of the console versions isn’t going to be possible. Though we have made great progress, we have concluded that we’ll need about six months to ensure we deliver the experience our fans expect and deserve.

Via a special offer, anyone who purchases and plays the PC/Mac version of The Elder Scrolls Online by the end of June will have the opportunity to transfer their character(s) to either console version when they are released. The offer will allow you to begin playing immediately on the PC/Mac, and then add the PS4 or Xbox One version and transfer the character(s) you have created and developed. And, you don’t have to pay full price for the game twice. For $20, eligible PC and Mac players will have the option to add a full, digital version of ESO on either the PS4 or the Xbox One with your character transfer(s), and another 30 days of included game time.

Cool, sounds like a win for everyone. Players who pre-order early get a hefty discount and they get 6 months of patching to fix any of the issues left over from launch. This really is a win-win if you think about it.

This worked out great for Blizzard with D3, as the D3 release on PC was horrendous and by the time the console version released people were experiencing loot 2.0 before PC players even. Really a good idea imo.

    Currently Playing: ESO and FFXIV
    Have played: You name it
If you mention rose tinted glasses, you better be referring to Mitch Hedberg.

Great move. Fix the game first.

Yes six months more time in the cooker can do nothing but good for this game. Also I am not going to be unhappy to be able to get the PS4 digital version for $20 with the free 30 days and be able to play my PC characters. image

So not only did the first month of gameplay go by without any major changes or updates (which they claimed they would do), but now they are pushing back the console release to "give the development team more time"?  To me, that just says that they are ill prepared, didn't spend enough time doing what they need to do, and now will be making the consumers pay for their mistakes.

Yes, they gave 5 free days to players in response to the problems with the launch (which was nice and of course they didn't "need" to).  But the fact remains that they have done little or nothing to encourage people to continue paying a subscription for a game that isn't offering any updates.  They have all these lofty "plans" from their roadmap, but haven't said anything about when these things might actually be included in the game.

I've had a decent time playing the game, so I'm not upset about my purchase.  It feels more like a single-player game to me, so that's how I've tried to think about it when considering whether it was worth the money to play it.  I got my month's worth of gameplay out of the game (as a casual-ish player I've put in about 75 hours in a month).

But when I think about whether I will re-subscribe when my "bonus time" is up in a few days, I'm about 95% leaning toward cancelling.  Simply put, I don't feel like I would be getting any value for being required to pay every month to keep playing.  I don't get the feeling that Zenimax/Bethesda is working hard enough to fix or continue developing/evolving the game.  There are plenty of other MMO's out there to play, and ESO hasn't really drawn me in.

It's probably really good for the quality of the release, but I'm not so sure it will be good for sales. People may just move on by then. Even a lot of PC players that want to convert their characters over may just be done with the game in 6 months.

While I'm enjoying playing the PC version it does very much feel like a paid beta . I'm playing a second month because I want to get to max level after that I think I will leave it and take another look towards the end of the year .

Interesting... so the PC players are currently Beta Testing the game for Console users. Nice :)

ESO probably expects that in 6 months the PC game will be in a steep decline, and by releasing the console version then, their game will be "revived" for another 6 months.

I just want to thank the fanboys for beta testing this product and keeping Zenimax in the black. I'll be waiting this one out until they offer a complete multiplayer PvE experience.

    ...yes, I'm bitter.

You were so proud of yourself being a wise ass, you failed to read the release. It says...

"We continue to work on the console versions of ESO, the game development has been progressing steadily, but we are still working to solve a series of unique problems specific to those platforms."

"... STILL WORKING TO SOLVE A SERIES OF UNIQUE PROBLEMS SPECIFIC TO THOSE PLATFORMS."

How does that translate to PC/MAC players are beta testing for consoles??!

I hate to burst the haters' bubble, but the PC, XBone, and PS4 versions are going to be totally different clients.  They might have the same quest texts and such, but how they're written and things of that nature are going to be totally different.  They aren't interchangeable like people seem to think.  It's like trying to put diesel in your gasoline car...I've had to explain this before, even across consoles, they are written differently.  There are no emulators and such that you can just plug in to your game code and it works.

So did us PC gamers for AA, Rift, D3, WS, the list goes on and on. Paying to beta test is more common than just getting into a beta by itself these days. D3 was the worst about this, the PC client was nearly unplayable, I basically paid for it to beta test the game for conoles as I was quite happy with the console version.

This is a big delay, I hope they plan to reward the console users with some extra goodies, and makes me wonder what their schedule is for releasing expansions or if it's going to be just regular updates.

@Gravarg, it's really not as different as you think.  I imagine most of the issues are performance related rather than programming problems.

Hopefully D3 for ps4 will come out before ESO and can keep me busy.

Are you implying that AA, Rift and Wildstar are being ported to consoles?

D3 is the only one that is for consoles right now, dont know where you got all those other names there...

Or the total game will be F2P and there won't be any backlash over having to pay double subscription for the Console version.  Yes I know PS4 will let you skip PS+ but XBone still requires you to sub to gold.

Chris Roberts addressed this wild speculation in a new dev post, stating:
"Star Citizen IS a PC game. It will NEVER be dumbed down for a lesser platform. We will NOT limit the input options or supported peripherals to the lowest common denominator. We will NOT pass on features and technology just because they will only run on some hardware configurations."

Sandbox means open world, non-linear gaming PERIOD!

Subscription Gaming, especially MMO gaming is a Cash grab bigger then the most P2W cash shop!

Bring Back Exploration and lengthy progression times. RPG's have always been about the Journey not the destination!!!

Game will either be buy to play now or f2p, more than likely it will be f2p and about the same time pc will also convert to f2p. - I think there were very very low pre orders for both consoles, something like 50k-70k for ps4 and the same amount for xb1 - some of those may have refunded by now after all the backlash after the pc release as well.

I bet sony and microsoft both said - hey Zeni you aren't releasing that garbage on our consoles, take it back give it another 6 months work and bring it back as a buy to play or f2p before you stunt our unit sales.

Sooo i am just not seeing it maybe i need to re-read it more carefully.... but will the consoles be on the same servers along with PC ? or will they all be separate?

Nothing like having the PC players pay you to beta test.
  • SalmonManSalmonMan Member UncommonPosts: 192

So, let me get this straight. You are a console gamer (Playstation or Xbox) and want to play ESO on console - not PC. Presumably their is a huge segment of people that only play on console, and have zero interest in playing this game, or many others on PC.

And their "generous" offer, due to the console version being beta tested on PC, *cough* I mean further developed for consoles *cough*, basically involves paying full price for the PC version, and then charging you again to play on console - admittedly with a decent discount on the digital purchase.

They certainly have balls don't they - getting full price plus extra charge, plus sub. And Xbox users also get slugged the Microsoft console tax - I mean subscription.

It is five whole US dollars that you pay extra through this deal. . .

If five dollars is that important to you, you should probably spend less time playing video games and more time bettering your life. . .

    Whats $5
  • CrusadesCrusades Member Posts: 480
It's a load of bs who has an xb1 or a ps4 and doesn't have live or psn? Zenimax sub fee for consoles is bs. Console players pay the 5 bucks for online play, why is that so hard to understand? Yes 5 dollars on consoles gets you the ability to play online. If the game wants to charge more then go ahead - I and millions of other console gamers just won't play your game. We will just keep playing all the other great games and ignore your snooty game that you think deserves additional cost. It's been that way forever it's part of the console culture. If you don't want to follow the standard then we will just keep playing COD year in and year out.

This may be just me, but it smells of defensive posturing.  As in they want to see how sales are for the PC before spending anymore on console development.

They already know what sales are for the PC version, or do you meant subscriber retention?

By most accounts they were just going to be raking in the money when they released on console with "Elder Scrolls" name on the box regardless of the actual quality of the contents which is what makes this move so puzzling.
