All the action?

TyrytTyryt Member Posts: 36
So, for those who are just looking here, and not in the forum for those who have pledged, or the IRC, the question is "Where is all the action?"  Answer: it's in the pledgers board and the IRC.   So, pledge up and join us!

I'm still waiting for all the systems to come back online here before I hit IRC, but I've been trying to catch up here in the mean time and, unless I'm doing a particularly excellent job of missing something obvious,  I still don't have access to said pledgers board (I went beta nearly as soon as we finished the last mission). I tried giving our beloved puppet master a yell a little while back, but I imagine he's got his hands full.

Any chance someone could fix that, or should I just assume it'll let me in once I upgrade?

That would seem to be the obvious course of action, wouldn't it?

Great. If my brain's not working well enough to unlock forum access, I'm going to be in serious trouble once things kick off in ernest.

Also, if we aren't talking in the IRC, say hello! Kiwi client does not get notifications when people log in and out, only during mentions and when people talk, so if we happen to be on other pages at the time we may miss you and we don't want that :c

Alternatively, if you're up to it, you can easily set up an IRC client such as mIRC - shouldn't take longer than a few minutes to get into the channel. Personally, I find it's much less cumbersome to stay in touch with the community using an IRC client versus the browser-based kiwi client, as it means I can just minimize IRC, instead of accidentally closing the browser. ;)

*shameless semi-self-advertisement* If you're unfamiliar with mIRC, there's a quickguide found here, which also gives some advice on how to set up an IRC client on an Android device.

I know it's been a while and I should probably let old grudges die, but I still can't help seeing mIRC as "that awful thing that AOL users use to spew broken, non-standard color codes into my channels". *threateningly waves a cane at all the kids on his lawn*

I'll have to give AndChat a look later - I've never had the occasion to work very extensively with (read: never actually touched) android IRC clients, although I've been spending today working on getting BitchX running on it (command line ftw!). I started using BX back when it was just a script for ircii (back when I was living on IRC), so I'm something of a loyalist. Or maybe just a nostalgist - there was nothing quite like the feeling of omniscience that came from running channels in an amazing five separate panels on my mighty 80x25 (well, 24 after the terminal status row) monitor.

While we're (vaguely?) on the topic, I'm actually brand new to Android in general (just got a shiny new Tegra Note 7)... Able to recommend any good on-screen keyboards for irc-speed typing? Having to shift for numbers kills the stock version for me (long passwords with a number every couple characters are no fun at all), and, while I've got small fingers, Hacker's Keyboard still ends up too cramped for me to get anything approaching legibility if I go over about 5wpm.

Aye, I agree mIRC is brimming with bad memories, or at least disturbing ones, which is why I stick to the #Division66 channel only. There's none of the usual shennanigans in there, so it's not much of a worry. On top of that, I must admit I prefer the standard layout of mIRC, which I think translates well to introducing people who aren't too familiar with IRC.

As for on-screen keyboards for Android, I haven't really looked into it - never had a reason to - so I'm afraid I won't be of much use in that respect. :)

Beside mIRC ... have you tried g+ hangouts? Most Smartphones now require that you have some type of gmail account access ... so naturally why not try the hangouts.

There is a The Black Watchmen on google + here https://plus.google.com/u/0/110063947580563809333/about .

Actually that level of integration is the main reason I'd be inclined to avoid using hangouts. In a game like this, on this scale, there's a laundry list of reasons (from RP, to organizational, to paranoid, to just plain making life difficult for that rendition team HE sent after you) why people might want to isolate their player identity from their day-to-day identity... The fact that Google integrates their accounts so thoroughly and over so many different web sites/services and devices makes it difficult to swap accounts without logging out from everything (gmail, Google *, Picasa, Youtube, and probably all those "Sign in with Google!" sites, too) or running multiple browsers (I'm not at all sure how to accomplish it on mobile), and all too easy to accidentally fling one identity kicking and screaming into the other world - like stumbling into work one morning, hung over and bleary-eyed, without noticing that you're still wearing the makeup from last night's drag show. Err... which I have absolutely never ever done. Ever.

IRC's nice because it's entirely uncoupled from any other services/accounts (in fact, it's almost entirely free of accounts of any sort), and - at least within our context - can even be effectively anonymous if you use the web client. It also removes almost any chance that you'll leave behind any suspicious-looking-and-awkward-to-explain long-term detritus lying around on the net for your future-prospective-boss to link to you while checking your references. ("Did I do what? Oh... that? Err... did I forget to put "planned and carried out raids against the intelligence agencies of foreign superpowers while in the employ of secret extragovernmental paramilitary organization" on my resume? Oops. That would have been on the line between "barista" and "Walmart greeter", but it just didn't seem relevant)

Of course,  all the notes and spreadsheets we use on Google Docs share some of these problems, but I'm personally rather less concerned about those than I probably should be - maybe because it's the social venues where we always tend to expose more of ourselves - whichever selves those are - to begin with.

From time to time I still run across some of the things I always hated when I was a regular, but on the whole the ARG channels are a much nicer place than the rough and tumble wilds of EFNet ever were.

Oh, I agree. As much as it makes me cringe, it's usually still my first suggestion if I'm trying to break in someone new to IRC... mostly because it's simple, and has been around for something like a decade and a half (or two? it can't be two), so I usually feel pretty safe in assuming that it'll still be available, and still work about as well as it ever did.

And it doesn't terrify people half so much as something that runs in a console window.

Well, I seem to have just gotten an old iMac keyboard - bondi blue, specifically - to work with it  (although it doesn't look like it'll charge at the same time), so that's something... Of course, it does seem to defeat the point of a tablet.

Oh well... I suppose I can plug in these speakers, too... and I think I've got an adapter, might as well give it a 24" monitor...
