My generic recommendation for people who like MMORPGs and haven't tried it is The Secret World.
TSW is one of the few MMORPGs to venture outside of pure fantasy and have it not feel crappy, IMO. It has the best solo questing of any MMORPG by far (on par with good single player games even). Far more diversity and depth in the questing. Quests often link together for stories with some being very long or chapters but it's less about one big story and more about a lot of related stories, so you don't feel as locked in and have more flexibility. Excellent atmosphere.
Environmental graphics are really good, animations are fine, character creation and appearance is somewhat on the hideous side but it's not entirely terrible. The graphics are a far cry from cartoony but aren't system crushing.
TSW has trinity but it also has an entirely skill based development system. It also doesn't have fixed levels or the concept of leveling, but you still earn xp and buy skills as you gain xp (still feels like leveling to me). It's a flexible system where if you want to put in the time you can get ALL skills and do all roles on one character, or you can play less and focus on one role, or you can do whatever you want (it's a good idea to focus and if you're totally new it's a better idea to use some build guides).
TSW has somewhat active style combat such that you can move around and avoid things but it's not quite the same as a TERA or WildStar - similar, but not the same, and it's not exactly tab target whack either. It's a solid setup. You make up a build of 7 active skills and 7 passives from your potentially scores of skills, and you can swap builds and gear out of combat without limit (as in, you can have as many builds as you want, with minimal restriction (have to buy more build slots fo in-game cash eventually)).
TSW doesn't quite hold your hand the way many idiot-friendly MMORPGs pamper children. It will kick your butt if you don't give it due respect. But at the same time it's fair and rewarding. And it's not like the game is brutally difficult - it's still an MMORPG with a lot of solo idiot mode. It's just that it's a bit LESS idiot mode than say, FFXIV or WildStar, where you'd have to be a complete failure at life to not succeed.
It has possibly the most enjoyable instances of any MMORPG (boss focused, little to no trash, tons of fun leveling, nicely challenging in endgame mode), it has a slick endgame gear progression system where you build up and customize your gear rather than continually replace it.
TSW is grossly underrated and if MMORPGs *must* include solo idiot content at least theirs is a little less idiotic and is often challenging, and has WAY more diversity in quest mechanics and diversity. The instances are absolutely excellent.
Where TSW is weak is that the crafting isn't much to write home about and Funcom is completely inept. Funcom laid the foundation for an excellent game but the fact that the solo content is so very distinct and that ONE character can be EVERYTHING means there's a bit less replay value than in many MMORPGs (no reason to ever make an alt) and Funcom is fundamentally confused on why MMORPGs exist (grouping and progressive PvE). They've focused on adding more solo content to the game rather than expanding and extending endgame, which is moronic, since spending 2 months making 2 hours worth of solo content is just stupid. People revisit the game, maybe, to play that kind of content, then they flit away to other games, and eventually they just never return. Core players get done with endgame and there's nothing else to do, and they're gone.
So I guess another aspect of TSW is that, there's only so much of it to play. This could be good if you want a game you won't sink years into or have suck up your life. But if you're more of an MMORPG lifer looking for the next big thing to spend years playing, I don't see how that could ever be TSW. Dedicated players should be all wrapped up with everything TSW has to offer including endgame in a couple months (which is where Funcom dropped the ball on this otherwise excellent game).
Premium MMORPGs do not feature built-in cheating via cash for gold pay 2 win. PLAY to win or don't play.
I'm looking for a new MMORPG too but right now there's no hope. The industry keeps churning out idiot-oriented trash, or worse, F2P idiot-oriented trash, and ever since WoW ruined the genre nobody has produced a "real" MMORPG in the original/classic style.
I'm hoping for an eventual return to the genre more niche and focused on what it does best (grouping, challenge, danger, quality) and getting away from the generic wider/casual appeal attempts that have yielded nothing but failed garbage games.
Maybe some day developers with balls will once again make MMORPGs of quality instead of bowing down to corporate money grubbers who only care about flashy numbers and profit margins.
