The limitations of the controller play are pretty fundamental, the device has a few buttons and that's it.

There are other games that have attempted to compromise between pc v console play.

FFXIV has two very different UI's, selected on initial set up. I've not heard many negatives on this. I played the keyboard option and found this to be very user friendly, didn't restrict game play.

Having this option in ESO would immediately throw up wails of protest from console players because of the perceived advantages in using a wider keyboard layout, particularly in pvp. Which only serves to highlight the limitations of the controller.

Neverwinter also has a console driven UI, but with a difference: The left and right mouse button skills (for pc) which are a standard given in ESO, are not in Neverwinter. You have the ability to slot different ones for these to suit your preferences.

But that's about it really. The controller is the limiting factor. The weapon swapping is an attempt to get around this, but I suggest pc players would prefer to have both sets of skills on-screen, particularly for a set up that uses the same weapon in 1 and 2.

I feel that ESO struggles more than other games to come to terms with the limited functions of the controller. The more the devs try to pack into a game in terms of class and weapon options just seems to highlight the increasing range of skills that you have to leave out.

There are intentional restrictions built into the game to stop players using a wide set of skills for one weapon - magicka usage as a prime example. Some would say that this promotes a wider variation in skill selections. (This seems to be a marketing driven slogan,  and a highly dubious one when the outcome is actually less available skills).

But others -  who are used to playing a class with a wide range and variety of class specific on-screen skills, will just see it as an impacting restriction brought on by a reduced input console device.

Right, so they settled for 5 buttons? Cause controllers can't handle more than 5 skills? Controllers are not the limiting factor here, it's Zenimax's decision to limit it to 5 skills.

IF you think that controllers can't handle more than 5 buttons, then you are just deluded.

Even on a keyboard how do you bind more than 20 skills? I mean you can of course but you just run out of buttons which are close to WASD. YOu can't really use the 0 or the / cause they are too far away. And please don't talk about 15 button mouses.

Mission in life: Vanquish all MMORPG.com trolls - especially TESO, WOW and GW2 trolls.

On most classes in Neverwinter, you only have 3 skills.  And I think Neverwinter has some of the best combat around.

Of course in a game like ESO with tab target and where pressing 1-5 in order is an effective way to attack, then it's going to seem pretty boring.

That's not because of the number of skills though.  Pressing 1-9 in order wouldn't make things any better.
