While I've played countless hours of JK2, SWB, BF1942 (ad naseum) online, I've never subscribed to a MMORPG. I saw that AO is free until 1/06, so I decided to give it a try.

After a 3hr download, I unzipped the file and tried Setup.exe. This told me to run Install.exe. This installed a new modem on my PC, but I was still unable to install the game. I'm not totally PC illiterate, but I couldn't figure this one out. Anyone have the answer? Thanks in advance.

btw try running install.exe then it will install it

As I said, running install.exe loads a new modem, it doesn't install the game. I downloaded the AO file twice (from 2 different sources) and got the same results.

it shouldnt install a new modem, a modem has nothing to do with ahte damn game jesus, a modem is fot the internet, run something else or run to the Anarchy online Forums, jesus!

Obviously not an physical modem, but it did install new software. When it ran it said 'removing old modems' and then 'installing new modem'. XP then notified me that 'new hardware' had been installed. I've already uninstalled the program. Not to make the baby Jesus weep again, but has anybody successfully downloaded and installed AO from the website recently?

It says the account is free for a year but on my account page it says I
am set up for a monthly billing cycle. Will I be charged?

No, all accounts created using this trial offer are free until January
of 2006. The billing cycle is what your account is set up for, once the
free period expires. If your account says you are on a monthly billing
cycle, which means you will be charged for a month of service,
beginning in January of 2006. If you have not entered any billing information
your account will simply be frozen at the end of the trial.

Can this offer be used with an older, cancelled account?

No, unfortunately not. The free AO promotion cannot be used with
pre-existing accounts. You must create a new account in order to take
advantage of the offer.

How do I cancel my account?

To cancel your account, simply click on the Account button on the Log
In page and then click Cancel at your account page. If you cancelled
successfully, you will receive a confirmation email. You can also access
the account page from https://register.funcom.com.

Note: Hotmail users cannot access the page properly through a Hotmail
window.

I received no game key upon set up.

When creating an account you do not receive a game key. The key is
automatically attached to the account for you. Upon completion of the
account set up, all you need to do is log into the game.

Can I upgrade the free account with the AO expansions?

Yes, you may upgrade the free account at any time. However, once you
upgrade your account with any of the three expansions, the free promotion
will end and your account will be charged as though it was a normal
account. The charges will immediately be applied to the account.

Please be careful when upgrading accounts. If you accidentally upgrade
a free account, we will NOT reimburse the charge or revert the account
back to free status.

When trying to create a character, it wont let me choose a name or
finish character creation. What is wrong?

This is most likely the result of having a firewall running. If you
currently have a firewall up you will need to either disable it, or make
sure the following ports are open:

80 7012 7013 7500-7504

You can open the ports from the firewall options menu.

I keep getting a Could not find valid dimension error when trying to
log in.

Possible firewall issue. Please refer to previous solution.

Am I able to access the forums with me free AO trial?

Yes, all new players have access to our forums and can read the posts.
However, access has been limited to read only. Only paid AO accounts
are given access for posting. If you need to post a question or comment,
we suggest visiting one of the fan sites. The links for these sites can

Whenever I try to create an account, the system kicks me back to
account creation.

There are a couple of reasons you may be experiencing this problem. The
most common is browser security. Check and make sure that your web
browser security is not set to HIGH and also make sure that you have
cookies enabled.

Also, it is not possible to create an account if you try doing so
through an open Hotmail window. You cannot access and change account
information through an open Hotmail email because of how they configure their
system. Please access the account directly from your browser or the log
in screen and then perform the action. It will work then. Sorry for the
confusion.

When I try to access the game, I get a log-in error.

If you are trying enter the game and the handler is giving you an error
message about processing your character log in, then more than likely
it is a traffic issue. Occasionally the log-in server will get
overwhelmed due to heavy traffic. If this happens, simply log out, wait a few
minutes, and then try and log in again.

The game never seems to stop patching.

If your game continues to patch even after your client has reached the
current version, what you need to do is delete the Patch Folder and
then run the aorepair.exe program (link below). After that, simply restart
patching.

'Please insert disk 1 that contains the file data2.cab.' Simply browse
to the folder where the downloaded files are located; for example, if
the game-files you downloaded are in a folder called
'AOInstall15.7.3_EP0_live_nointro', browse to that folder and select it when asked for
data2.cab.

If you run Install.exe and a window pops up containing command-line
parameters, OR if you get the setup for a program other than Anarchy
Online (e.g., video drivers), start the installation from a command prompt.
Go to Start > Run, type 'cmd' and click 'OK'. Use the 'cd' command to
change to the directory containing the Anarchy Online installation
files. Type the following and press 'Enter': setup.exe
install
