A small glimpse into the mind of an MMORPG developer

You know, you gotta love the internet.  It's like having this big ole simulated brain that holds all of this crazy assed information in a very similar way that your real brain holds it, only way more accurately and, depending on the information, way longer.

All of this to say that the way I came about the thing that I am about to link happened exactly the way that many conversations between my wife and I end up going south.  One person says one thing and that thing fires off another thing which , in turn, leads to another train of thought and the next thing you know you are so far off of the original point that what you are now thinking, or talking about, it almost completely unrelated to what was originally said.

Such was the case when coming to the boards (the MMORPG website) today.  The first thing I was met with was Mark Kern's blog about storytelling in MMORPG's (See the front page).  Not a bad article actually and I said so in the comments section.

That article however, and in particular the comments that I had to make about it, got me thinking about the Rhythm of MMORPG's.  So I popped over to my own blog and opened up an entry with just that title.  Wanting to give credit to Mr. Kern then for the inspiration for what was going to promise to be a fairly good entry for the week I popped open another browser tab and typed his name in, hoping to come up with his MMORPG blog within the first couple of responses.

Instead I came up with this....

http://www.reddit.com/r/Games/comments/1tuf3c/this_is_why_mark_kern_was_removed_as_ceo_by_red_5/

Now this thing is about 4 months old so I am sure that to those of you who are in the know, all up in Reddit and all up on your industry news and whatnot, this is old news.  Me though, I've been playing video games for the last 4 months and so I often miss this kind of stuff when it happens.

Of course this article totally derailed my plans for the night as I found myself quickly drawn into the debauchery of what it is to be the CEO of a video game development company LOL.  So instead of writing that blog that I intended to write, I instead present this to you all in this form (meaning in the forums) so that it can A. be discussed and B. eventually dissolve into the world of old forum posts instead of remain preserved on my blog page as the day I intentionally threw someone under the bus by propagating bad things that were said about them.

That is really not my intention here.  My intention here is more so to give you all a little glimpse at the size and scope of the ideas coming out of some of these guys heads and at the money being spent, the concepts being developed, and most importantly the perspective of those who stand looking as it all goes down.

Whether the guy who wrote this was correct in his assessment I reserve judgement.  It is however, even if you don't want to get in the middle of all of that, a deeply fascinating read and I would suggest that you all take a minute out to sit down and really read it, in full, and click on all the links.

Hell, that was a pretty good time for me.

Peace

Jesad

In the sense of fairness (and understanding), this was Mr. Kern's response.

    Response

And in all honesty, when I read this the first time, out of context, I had no freaking idea what he was talking about hehehe.

    Now you know.
