Xsyon now has a PVE server and even before that you were always safe within the boundaries of your own land.
I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.
And yet the PvP croud seems to be fishing for the idea that sandboxes and PvP are synonyms. But yet there's nothing in sand that says go kill your neighbour.
Second Life...Not only does it have no FFA PvP, it is also the most important sandbox game, from an intellectual standpoint.

Pvp will always go with sandbox because sandboxes are about player freedom. There are often consequences for a player's negative actions but they can do what they want.
Here's another challenge, name any AAA quality sandbox that has been released in the past 12 years... you can't because one does not exist.
Releasing a sandbox focused MMO without open world PVP is like releasing a themepark MMO without some form of PVP. You get that vocal minority that becomes obsessed with crapping all over your game in every channel they can find to do so, as if it is some violation of the laws of nature to leave such a feature out.

I walk by a real sandbox -- there's a childcare facility with an enclosed outdoor playground in this building -- several times a day and I've yet to see anyone get shanked there.
Hell, I don't even see kids destroying other kid's sand castles, at least not without the teacher telling the little snot in question that if he does it again he'll get a time out.
Odd... I wonder if they know they're doing it wrong?

SWG, while arguably a Sand box with various theme parks, was most definitely a Triple A MMO. It had consensual PvP and it did quite well until it was 'fixed' to death.
Up coming, Arche age, the Repopulation, I know you said released, but patience they are coming. Then what argument will you use? Because this one is weak and false any way, better head to the drawing board.
If you want a new idea, go read an old book.

PvP is a concept of a Player versus a Player. It can be a competition in a combat or crafting or any other activity that the game is focused on.
For instance World of Warcraft has GvG which stands for Guilds vs Guilds progression competition and so on. So embrace any game that allows freedom and tools for its players to compete.
Of course the current PvP with guilds in WOW is frowned upon since guilds that invest most times through the weeks usually are the most progressive, but that's not the discussion about.

Oh yeah! I forgot about that one. Definitely too expensive. If it was a $15 a month mmo, I'd probably still be playing it. Lots of fun and amazing housing.

A Tale in the desert was released 2003 first. So that one is out.
Wurm online was release 6/6/2006 accoring to wikipedia. Here you are right, but man, that was close.

Do we need another one of these threads?
Some will make the point that any sandbox needs pvp ...
Some will make the point that sandboxes don't ...
Sandboxes are just games where the tools are given for players to make their own choices
Whats left for discussion?
I can't name a single MMO that has FFA PvP, ever. Maybe UO?
Most have zones that prevent PvP, not to mention you can't attack your own faction.
You make me like charity

not the case, regrettably...

this is just hilarious.
Lots of people who are actually the EXACT target group of themepark MMOs (optional PvP)
debating sandbox MMOs and why sandbox MMOs should all become themeparks.
what's next? Should PvP have a need for actual Players or could bots pretend to be players?
