The Cost of Playing Catch Up. Why Game companies will lose millions.

KnotwoodKnotwood Member CommonPosts: 1,103

So the other day, I was looking into rejoining a few games,  but I did not resubscribe, because the fact is that I would have to buy two expansions in order to play some of these games to max level for all of the content I have missed.   Gone is the days where if you buy the most recent expansion, you'll get all the previous ones before it.

Now I find myself facing having to buy every single expansion I missed, leaving me to have to pay Hundreds of dollars to resub to old games.   This has made me throw three games away, never to look back.   If they dont change thier practice and allow me to buy only the most recent expansion to catch up,  I will find myself missing three expansions or more, raising the cost to 150+ per a game to rejoin, I just don't see myself or others rejoining at those prices.   Which will probably lead to millions lost by game companies.

It's one of the reasons I've never gone back to wow. Once you miss a whole ex pack it's really not worth it to buy your way back into a game you might be bored of quickly.

The company sees them as having a value but outdated content has very little to someone coming back. They wont get the same experience as the people who were there when it launched. I tend to agree that more people would come back and buy the new one if it included all the old content. I think the numbers would probably even themselves out.

Other than the occasional group sale offer or when a publisher decides to make an expansion a part of the main game, expansions have always sold separately.

I always thought they should make it so that if you buy the latest expansion, they should just give you everything else.  That's what DAoC used to do with Gold, Platinum, etc. editions.  You paid $60 and got upto date. or maybe it was $40 back then...

What game is charging $50 for outdated expansions?  For some reason I thought old WoW expansions were only like $20ish.

And that's the reason why I stopped playing some of my games before, if you missed one expansion set, then VOILA! you should by sets that you haven't bought till the present release. That's the reason why now I'm only playing some f2p MMO's. And now, enjoying it even i could purchase points sometimes, at least not always as it is. =)

The old wow expansions are free, up to and including Cata.

If you already own WoW, buy MoP and you're current no matter what exp. you left.
