I played 1.0 and thought it was horrible, I decided to play again but this time on PS4, mainly though I'm back playing for an excuse to use the console that I haven't touched since the day I got it lol. I just don't get the hype over this new version of FF14...
The opening is exactly the same, they still haven't got round to doing voice acting for it and it just feels like they've turned it more into WoW. So far I'm doing the exact same quests I remember doing in MMOs 10+ years ago, I think MMOs have finally started to move on, but FF14 has stayed in the past when it comes to the quests. The combat is really slow and boring still, the UI for the PS4 version sucks, I find it hard to navigate it and working out where to go for a quest on the mini map is really difficult.
There is nothing Final Fantasy about it though, I got to level 9 and I'm bored, I don't want to continue. I don't understand what this has to do with FF? There is no story and everything feels so dated, it is literally like going back 10+ years and tbh I think even FF11 was doing more interesting things.
I hate the new world design as well, all they've done is added loads of loading screens. Why? They never existed in 1.0 to this extent, suddenly cities that never had loading screens in them, now they have 4 or 5. The world is so like a coridoor, there are barely any open areas, when you look at the actual playable area on a map, most of it is like straight lines. Most the stuff in the game has an invisible wall there and I just feel so packed in.
I just don't get it and it doesn't help that the world is dead and there is no easy way of talking as they forgot to build in voice chat for the console version. I bet most people were fans of FF11 and are on the legacy servers, I had a FF11 account but the process they made you go through to make an account for that game, I'll never remember any of the details for it lol. I thought TESO was bad, but that game feels light years ahead of this one...
I still have to question what makes FF11 and 14 feel like Final Fantasy to people? I've played them both and neither are anything like those game and they lack story, people keep saying they have amazing stories...... I've not come across any in either game but the short opening thing that has no story to it.
Comments
When going with the story, especially early on, the feeling, atmosphere, music, EVERYTHING is Final Fantasy. They even have character and boss throwbacks from earlier games throughout. There's a TON of story. It might not be the greatest story, but it's still awesome. You're entirely wrong about this point.
Other than that, the rest is entirely opinion that I can't argue. Either like it, get used to it, or get out, pretty much.
Darianle - This is the best reply I've ever read. So true.
On any case, I don't play FFXIV anymore as the combat is a bit too slow for me, but that's a matter of opinion obviously . I know others play it and enjoy the hell out of it, I'm glad they enjoy it! I have no reason to come in here and rain on their parade like the OP.
If anything the main story is one of the best I have played in.
Of course my opinion.
This ^^^^^
+1
Well, if you don't like it simply don't play it. Not everything in life is appealing to each individual. /shrug
All video games have their own personalities and it seems you don't fit this ones!
Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.
OP FFXIV is like Wow that has been Square's push even since 3 years ago in FFXI.They are aiming for the largest possible audience,NOT for each individual.
Of course you are going to get loading screens the graphics are the highest end of any mmorpg. If you want Wow graphics then you can get away with it but even then Square would choose zones over continuous loading .
Voice chat means NOTHING to games, unless you think we could not game in past years when there was no voice acting?I am pretty sure ALL of us did quite alright.BTW there is voice acting in what they considered the important scenes.
BTW their cut-scenes far surpass pretty much every game out there, you prefer GW2 2d static non animated cut-scenes?FFXIV's opening movie has more effort in it than most games put into their entire portfolio of cutscenes/movies.
None the less FFXIV is NOT a game breaker but then neither is ANY other game and that is why i am not playing any mmorpg's right now, they are all boring and bring nothing new to the table. The last great well constructed mmorpg for me was FFXI,best character/class design, real world Lore, great combat more in depth systems than any game.
I surely hope the OP does not think that if some game comes along and adds in voice acting that makes a game?Name ONE single game that does not have you chase around markers over npc heads, you won't find it ,that's right FFXI was the last of good game design.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
Where is this main story? I saw a crap intro which has no story and hasn't changed since 1.0 and that is it... been nothing since but a bunch of fetch and kill 10 rats quests.
More story in WoW...
Certainly doesn't touch the story in SWTOR and TESO, even if those are bad MMOs as well.
They are the quests with the meteor icon rather than the shield icon (the ones with the cutscenes involved. The ones with the cutscenes. Probably the most coherant FF story since 9 possibly.
LOL
About what was going through my head after the first paragraph.
The reason there are load screens is because now in 2.0 the game plays 300 times better and smoother. Sometimes you sacrifice a few seconds to make something function better.
I will agree I was let down by the laziness to not at least have all of the main quest line voice acted, but it is not a big deal. The story is still there and is great, if you like the lore... if you don't then.... wtf are you doing playing a Final Fantasy game in the first place?!
Some of the game feels too much like WoW, but as you play and get into the larger group fights and dungeons it loses that feel and becomes more like a FF game (imo). I do feel the combat is still a little slow, but a huge improvement over 1.0 and FFXI.... Being able to move and not be animation locked is very nice.
All in all the game is not the pile of horse manure that the OP seems to think it is.
The main story icon looks different than regular quest icons. You are probably focusing on the filler quests. The main story quests are packed with story. Plus, I have to wonder if you played 1.0 at all. The intro is entirely different. I actually preferred the intro in 1.0
The game has plenty of story, your main story quest chain is non stop all the way up to 47 where it takes a brief break, and then blossoms out again at 50. Plus you have the class story quests which progresses every 5 levels, and every single mechanic in the game has some sort of context to the world. You have to watch a cutscene to unlock almost every little feature of the game...so there is definitely plenty of story and context to your actions. If anything there is too much in this game.
Anyways, it looks like you are just looking for the negatives and can't seem to find any of the positives so it's probably a moot point to convince you. I haven't played an MMO like this since EQ or WoW, and I think this is coming very close to surpassing WoW in terms of hours played by myself. It just has a lot of everything I'm looking for in an MMO in one nice polished package. I wouldn't be surprised if I'm near the several hundred hour mark with this one so far.
Lastly, this game freaken oozes final fantasy left and right. That comment is so far off base I don't even know how you came to that conclusion. There are just so many damn iconic FF themes in this game it's just crazy.
Then you have only gotten to maybe level 4. Once you get above level 5 you start getting the story quest. Play more than 5 minutes and you will enjoy it.
These people have to play something I guess.
I had fun once, it was terrible.
I can't understand for the life of me how this game doesn't feel like Final Fantasy to people who appreciate the series. I've been playing FF games since the first on the NES as a kid, and the amount of throwbacks in the game, the music, and atmosphere just scream FF to me. The nostalgia component of Biggs and Wedge, and Magitek armor alone was enough to get me crazy excited. lol
This isn't to bash what you said or anything, it's just baffling to me.
I tried to get into the game. Played during beta. Pretty game, but it left me flat. The text bubbles are a throw back to games a decade ago. The maps felt convoluted. The quests were the typical "kill x number of these" and so many people just ignoring all of it to zerg to the the mini events.
I have no doubt the FF devotees will find a reason to love the game and pay the fees. It did not appeal to me in the least. At this point I much prefer a game like The Secret World and ESO.
Its a good game, it just needs about two expansions. Once Yoshi and Co. break the Japanese audience out of their mmo training wheels this game will be fantastic. Trust me, two expansions and this game will be worth returning to and will probably be the best themepark on the market. Yoshi is already adding small sandboxish things to the game slowly. By the time the second expansion drops you should see this game almost turning into a "sandpark".
Until then just wait for something else. And if you don't like FF or are biased towards anime styled games just leave it alone. One thing I will say with absolute confidence. The text dialogue is better than anything save for TSW. Its really good and does not pull any punches, its actually also leagues more mature than many give it credit for. The translation team has done an excellent job and there are plenty of adult terms in there. Much much more than you would expect for a game that looks the way it does, and much much more adult dialogue than any FF that has come out in the West.
Wait for the expansions. Then it will be worth it trust me.
Any mmo worth its salt should be like a good prostitute when it comes to its game world- One hell of a faker, and a damn good shaker!
At some point, you need to decide when to stop fretting over things you don't understand. You don't understand why people like me love this game then bash every answer explaining why. You're obviously not on a quest for knowledge. Perhaps its time to stop worrying about it and move on.
