Why Factions?

JabasJabas Member UncommonPosts: 1,249

One thing i never like in mmorpgs is have to choose a faction when i create my char.

Since i quit L2 some years ago, most of the games i jump in there it was: "choose your faction", never understand why we need factions in games, 2, 3, 5 whatever, dont make diference.

Now about AA, really like this game but there we have again: pre made faction on char creating, why? why its need it? Special in a owpvp game?

Playing a little in last 2 months in ru and pre made factions dont make sense at all, game could be much better in my opinion if that feature was remove.

Let the players play the race they want without lock to a faction, let the players build their own factions using guilds system, choose whos the enemy and whos allys.

Is not a game breaker for me, but still.

For me it doesnt make sense at all having pre made factions in AA.

If you knew anything about lore in any game you've played that had factions, then you'd understand... Your ignorance isn't an excuse to remove something that many like. Besides, how would there be open world PvP unless everyone just killed everyone? In AA, the Nui and Harani were once a single group, but two groups arose that both wanted their person to become king. The people that won were the Nui, while the people that lost were the Harani. The Harani were either sent away by the Nui or left because they didn't want to live under that king, and that's how they ended up on the west continent and hating the Nui. Also, if you spend enough time, you can change factions to either the west or east continents, regardless of race. Player-made factions are also a feature, I feel like you literally only bothered to read the name of the game before you bought it. I haven't even played this game yet but I'm apparently much more knowledgeable on it.

Factions tend to establish a form of teamwork. However, with this game - you can still kill your own faction, and people do it all the time. There is also the case of lore - which I could care less about, but it serves a purpose for those who enjoy it. Personally, I prefer to make my own story.

Factions in this game are more for lore than anything else considering that you can become a pirate (no faction) as well as eventually create your own faction.

    So it really doesn't matter.

For me it doesnt make sense at all having pre made factions in AA.

Lets look at the biggest mmorpg on the planet for the last many years. World of Warcraft. They had 2 factions since the beginning. They had different starting areas. After a while of leveling you would eventually come into contested territory.

    Sound familiar?

If it works good in other games why change the mechanic.

If you didn't have any factions to start with then everyone could kill anyone and there would be no negative effects or benefits unless you added full looting to the game. That opens up a whole different can of worms and there are already games that do that anyways.

I really like the moral actions with jail time and Karma points adding until becoming a pirate which means you are killed on sight by your previous faction npc's and must then go to a pirate npc island to get things done in game. This is basically choosing a faction other than your starting one after some time.

This system feels a bit like mixing UO with World of Warcraft to me and that is a fine mix for faction play.

    edit

my favorite faction based game was EQ. Every race in that game was bound to certain factions which mostly could change a bit with alot of work from the player. Some quests in EQ even made it so you would have to work on making a faction like you enough to talk to you for a quest. Was always fun hitting the /con to find out what other factions thought of me.

Rift also followed World of Warcraft's system of 2 factions with different starting areas and was quite successful.

People who constantly PK their own faction aren't really considered part of the faction by other players which brings together people(teamwork + social) to fight those people(pirates). You can make your own story by creating your own faction or joining the other one.

They're just mixing lore with reality. People have become pirates and created their own factions IRL all throughout history, so that's an invalid point. Pirates are realistic in ancient and modern times. Many games have aspects of reality merged into their games everywhere: guns, boats, animals, etc. Nearly everything in a game comes from something we have in our universe.

But im not looking for a wow style mmorpg. Having nothing against wow but is not for me.

Just because wow have a huge success theres no need to copy all is features.

There are other game with a huge success too, L2 (the old one) and it didnt had factions, was based in clan wars and it work perfect imo.

I dont want the game x or y be like L2 or wow or any other game, only mentioned just as a example.

Ofc I know this change is not going to hapened because change alot other mechanism in game like the pk system, i just dont like pre made faction feature in games and made this post only to see others opinions about this.
