Hey well I'm still kind of new here but I'm not new to MMO's. I've had this idea for a original MMO in my head for awhile now. I've played EQ, CoH and now WoW. I've only played the first warcraft game in the series before. How about having players charged with building their own small cities? I know it sounds a little crazy but at least it would be different. The world would have to be huge to have enough space for players to build their own towns. They'd have to start questing to earn money so they could build them. Or perhaps even join up with other players/guilds and could start building large cities together. I know this would focus on putting alot of teamwork between strangers or friends but I still think it would be a neat idea. And yes the game would have to have huge vacant areas for players to build thier cities. Depending on how big the game limits the players cities of course.

Like in Star Wars Galaxies? That game has every feature you mentioned afaik. Even city politics type stuff, and city defense.
Anarchy Online also has a complex and varied city system built around their Alien Invasion expansion pack. I wasn't really high enough to participate, but at 150 or so I was able to at least mess around there a bit without dying, and the invasions were pretty fun even just as a spectator.

They'll be guilds own though, but if you're a single player guild, don't see why you cant own one also if you can make the maintaince fee and time
Shadowbane is like a medieval/fantasy setting with city building and politics.
