Thought I'd be playing ESO, enjoying myself in WS - never saw that coming

docminus2docminus2 Member UncommonPosts: 184
As an avid Elder Scrolls player (esp Skyrim) I really thought I would be busy with ESO for ages to come. But as it turned out it wasn't what I expected. WS on the other hand, I thought I wouldn't care for, seeing some of the videos that have been out.

But now, having tested it, I love it. Didn't think I would like a pure theme park MMO at this point (having just come from EVE), especially after ESO, but oh was I wrong!

Yes, it's not perfect, but as long as it's fun, even if it is just for a few months (long run?). Great job Carbine.

I was in the same boat... if I had just looked at the graphics and the fact that it's a theme park I would have stayed the hell away.

I tried it and haven't stopped having fun since. I'm pretty ok with that :)

I never was up for ESO, not because of the quality or anything else, but because it isnt of my taste.

When i first saw WS i thought it was an ok game close to my gaming style. Played a couple of months back in beta and i liked it a lot. Now with every lvl gained i love it even more.

I m playing it with my rl friends and guild m8's (mainly from wow but also from rift and swtor) and we are having great time. If Carbine keeps the promise about the fast paced & quality content updates, then WS will be our home for long.

    Time will tell :)

Haha, I felt similar. I thought I would be playing ESO for who knows how long, all the while laughing at Wildstar in extreme mockery and detesting everything about it. Yet here I am playing and enjoying Wildstar to an extent my cynical self had not quite known in some time.

I am having the same sentiments as the OP but not because of previous Skyrim play. I am a former DAoC player and I thought I would identify with ESO'S PvP system. Wildstar is simply more polished and more fun to play.

After the fourth zone and 40 levels in ESO I thought to myself how boring it really was. My favorite part of ES games were the delving, but 90% of dungeons in ESO are done in 3-5 minutes and are almost the same as the last one. The questing wasn't bad actually enjoyed them, I might return to get to VR 10 but right now giving WS a shot with the guest pass.

I'm in the same boat.  I thought ESO was going to be the next long-term game for me.  WildStar's cartoony graphics and theme-park design were things I didn't want, but could tolerate in my MMOs if done well.  ESO didn't resemble Elder Scrolls games enough.  It ended up being a quest grindfest with no real substance.

I'm only level 16 in WildStar and enjoying the questing and story.  There seems to be a lot more content than ESO had.  It also feels like I'm doing more than making an experience bar fill up.

I am just happy that I am enjoying Wildstar. After ESO I seriously began to doubt whether mmo's are for me anymore and why I keep spending money and hoping that they will be good.

I played a couple gw2 beta weekends, gave props for an extremely well made game but did not purchase because I didn't like the aesthetics.

Started the same way playing ws beta. But I decided not to miss out on something special (again). So I bit the bullet and dove in. Yeah there are more than a few obnoxious things about this game. But it is proving to be an expertley crafted mmo and I have zero regrets.

Now I'm in a difficult situation of splitting mmo time between two great games. Hehe, I love having problems like this.

I play and enjoy both. Wildstar has plenty to do and offers a more video game feel (it's just plain fun to play) whereas ESO provides me with an incredible world and decent immersion.

I actually really love ESO, but I didn't rush to VR levels. I played slowly and explored and rolled alts.  The only reason I stopped is because of the bot army and the broken skills and passives.  My favorite build didn't even work because Zenimax can't program for shit.

But I don't like Wildstar either. So... I'm SoL.

    Playing: Smite, Marvel Heroes
Played: Nexus:Kingdom of the Winds, Everquest, DAoC, Everquest 2, WoW, Matrix Online, Vangaurd, SWG, DDO, EVE, Fallen Earth, LoTRo, CoX, Champions Online, WAR, Darkfall, Mortal Online, Guild Wars, Rift, Tera, Aion, AoC, Gods and Heroes, DCUO, FF14, TSW, SWTOR, GW2, Wildstar, ESO, ArcheAge
Waiting On: Nothing. Mmorpg's are dead.

I am also one of the very surprised masses.

I tried Wildstar in beta, didn't like it much and thought ESO would be my game. I've commented on these forums several times about the things in Wildstar I didn't like.

A friend gave me a guest pass yesterday and urged me to play and guess what? I played all day long and had a blast! I really don't know why, and I'm not going to analyse it. The hours flew by, I had a smile on my face and genuinely laughed out loud a few times.

ESO has become dry and dull for me so cancelled my sub and now it looks like a Wildstar purchase is incoming. I would never have thought in a million years...

Except for the starter area, the game has infinitely  improved since my first beta experience,,...

in beta i tried to save up the lore stuff for release, which worked miracles, i am very much immersed in the world and the main stories, almost so much that i keep forgetting to do dungeons and adventures..  And PvP...

unless grouped, i try to play in chuncks of about 2 hours, with an hour of rest in between... Gives me two sessions on a weeknight, and still some fammily time....

I couldn't agree more with the OP, I absolutely didn't think I would be playing Wildstar, it just seemed so juvenile when I first tried it in beta. I actually uninstalled it and never thought to look back. I heard about how much the game improved gave it another look and decided to preorder.

I do still have an ESO sub, but I haven't even wanted to play it. Wildstar is just FUN. I've seen discussions about there being way too many quests and a thread about the screen just being too busy, which I completely disagree. I take the time to smell the roses in games now, and read everything, every quest, every lore book.

I have a Wildstar guest pass and I'm unable to play this game more than 15 minutes... I'm about to buy ESO, ESO beta was fun... or, maybe I should go back to FFXIV or WoW.

I really don't understand what's fun in Wildstar, there's no immersion at all, there's almost nobody too in low level zones. (And I'm playing on a HIGH pop server). I also prefer targeting (AOE is fun once a while, not all the time), and the story isnt good or fun at all to me. Quest look really repetitive, too easy , too short and boring...

With all those great comment I see about this game, maybe I missed something...

I would like to know if there's some Wildstar player over 30 years old? Maybe I'm too old for this game... maybe my generation dont like the same games.

That's how I feel.  I've been in love with the Elder Scrolls IP since the first time I played Morrowind back in 2002 and have played every expansion, DLC (except the horse armor), and sequel since.  However I told myself I wouldn't buy ESO because I knew,..I KNEW it wasn't anything like the IP.  Of course I bought it anyway and gave it a chance to hook me or show me something that I might have missed that explained all of the hype behind it.

Well, long story short I dropped that game in about a week and a half.  Now enter Wildstar.  I knew what this game was going to be too and I knew I liked most aspects of it though I admit I was apprehensive about playing another game with quest hub grinding since I did like ESO's more freedom and exploration tied in with it's questing system.  However, after having put in several hours, found the class I liked after a few tries (medic), and got into what entails the whole PVE aspects of the game.  I must say I'm impressed and glad I took another chance with an MMO considering my experience just before this one.

I am ashamed to say but.....

    Same happened to me :/

Tried WildStar in Beta....didn´t grab my attention... and bought TESO.

I´ve been playing TESO but suddenly lost interest... it´s too much like a solo experience, very unfriendly with grouping...and it ALL feels the same...no thrills...it all felt the same zone after zone while leveling... hard to explain but.... stopped loging in....

Bought WildStar to give it another try due to boredom and....now I´m loving it!

In Beta didn´t give the game a chance at all probably because of it´s art style since i prefer the ESO look... but gameplay did it for me. It´s ridiculously fun! And very polished and full of details.

I didn´t see this coming neither.... but I think i´m gonna be busy playing WS for a while^^

And i really hope to come back to TESO in a couple of months when they do some twiches to game that are needed.

welcome to the club I loved eso in beta hated wildstar, tried eso at launch and couldn't stand the linearity of it and frankly it wasn't fun.  Got wildstar convinved myself to get past level 10, once I got into the wilds of the game I was having alotof fun, frustrating colorful fun. I'm 2 levels from getting my house and crafting till I die....this is my theme park fix and archeage is my home !!!!! finally.

    so say we all

What is interesting is that there is not much negativity about WS. If someone doesn't like it, it's the graphics or theme park idea or other "general things". Where ESO is criticised on almost a nit-picking level - which isn't really fair, it is a great game, even if not for me; guess it's the comparison to the single player IP, whereas WS is new from scratch?

I thought I would be playing ESO too even though I like seeing people in an mmo but too many people doing the same solo quests in a linear game leads to a feeling that its overcrowded . The one thing I will say about ESO is I could play it on Ultra with about 40-50 fps in the open world when it comes to wildstar even if I play it on the lower settings I only get 20-30 fps in the open world . I agree with the OP it does seem the better game but I'm not willing to upgrade my computer to play it especially when every other game I want to play runs just fine on it .

I pretty much predicted this is what would happen.

ESO got hyped to hell and back. Then it went and flopped come launch as so many put it.

Us fans of WildStar were keeping it on the low down so people could be pleasantly surprised. Not that WildStar is clean of faults. It does have a few issues to work out. But gets my vote as current best MMO on the market.

i tryed beta 2 time and dident like WS now i love ! enjoying a lot
  • JDis25JDis25 Member RarePosts: 1,353

I am in the same exact situation. I loved ESO's attention to detail and quest system. There was abundant lore and the questing was a joy. However that is about the extent of ESO. Quests. There is no incentive to PvP, post 50 is pure quest grinding. Can't comment on Vet12 content in ESO as I couldn't make it, and I have a lot of endurance for these games....

Wildstar has my attention and though the questing isn't as fun or immersive as ESO, it has so many other activities that I enjoy a lot more, it is a group MMO, whereas ESO was a single player MMO.

Now Playing: Bless / Summoners War
Looking forward to: Crowfall / Lost Ark / Black Desert Mobile

Similar situation for me in a way.  Played ESO until level 17 but the boredom just became too much.  With lack of anything to play, I tried WoW again (never had gotten past about level 15 in that and I used to talk a lot of smack about it) and I am having an awesome time with it.  Go figure, the game I had blamed for the downfall of the genre, and now I actually really like it!
