The next World of Warcraft.

Lets be honest to ourselves. World of Warcraft, like it or not, was and is one of the biggest gaming undertakings ever. The scope of it is pretty huge, it may not be revolutionary, but what it does it does very well.

When can we expect the next WoW? to be or not to be that is the question.

Mmorpgs are becoming more and more common place as gaming is becoming less and less of a taboo hobby.

"NERDS!!!!"

"Why thank you."

I'm Hoping that the next World of Warcraft isn't just gonna be Stars of Starcraft.

Although I'd settle for that too.

:)

One of the biggest undertakings ever? How? World of Warcraft is a blantant clone with little content aside from getting gear and fighting. Call it bashing if you will but im not one whos going to be gushing over how great it is. Its fun for awhile, it has some good ideas (although most arent very original) and its overhyped.

If WoW is so great, why are you asking for a SEQUEL whens its only been out for 6 months?

i believe lineage was one of the largest and wow has nothing on that. also i played wow got pissed alot because the players were just so dumbfounded and never helped anyone else out. also getting ganked while level 20 by a level 60 doesnt improve at all either.

Mechwarrior states the truth, all of the community will never get along so we sure as hell better accept it. So the bottom line here is,Orcc and Bobbler, you like it or not, WoW WAS a big MMORPG, now we are NOT f**king asking for your opinion of the game, when it breaks the record of 500k accounts and such after the first while and WoW was deemed the most growing MMORPG of all time, that IS revolutionary. It was YOU who decided to be a smartass because you knew what he meant.

Mechwarrior, I wouldnt change a thing.

you should really keep your mouth closed unless you know of what you speak. lineage has 4,100,000 accounts WoW only has 1,500,00. also i dont think you should be tlaking here like that. WoW brought fanboys that are very annoying in to the world of mmorpgs they think they know everything about anything and they will always start ot flame and cuss when someones says WoW is not as good as X mmorpg. and it is NOT the fastest growing mmorpg lineage and RYL have avery large player database and are still increasing.

the only reason why WOW has sold so much is because it has the blizzard name on it. If it was made by mythic or some other company it wouldn't even have half the people it has now.

  • lonelyrobotlonelyrobot Member Posts: 194

World of Warcraft is revolutionary. Perhaps it's nothing new in terms of design, but it can be considered revolutionary when it brought that many new players to what was previously considered a "niche genre" here in the states. Things are never going to be the same again when there's that much money to be made.

Baseless arguement.  I could be wrong here but I think Star Wars and Sony are pretty big names... yet SWG hasn't done squat compared to WoW.  Try again.

WoW's success is due from Blizzard's name recignition, and building up 17+ million fans worldwide. WoW was created and intended first for Blizzard fans.

When can we expect the next WoW? to be or not to be that is the question.

What other company, or brand name do you know that already has name recignition?

Only in America are gamers called names. And gaming is "taboo". In Asia it is as natural as riding a bycycle - for males and females. 30% or more players of Diablo II are female gamers! And they are just as good, and many times better, than male players - including American players! I have met some of them in American PC Bangs. For some reason American culture continues to make it "uncool" to be smart, be into books, study, and to be a computer gamer. Even right now in the popular US press, almost every review of Star Wars talks about the fans beeing geeks, nerds, etc... "Revenge of the Nerds" was in one big bold headline. image

It is very possible Blizzard might make a Starcraft MMORPG. But not anytime soon. Maybe the earliest 4 years from now. WoW is taking up all of Blizzards attention right now.

Some other potiential name brands that could explode just as big, or bigger than WoW, and SWG:

      1. STO - Star Trek Online

      2. DO - Dune Online

      3. UO2 - Ultima 2

      4. BTO - Bard's Tale Online (The next best selling computer RPG game series after Ultima.)

      5. PO - Phantasie Online (The 3rd best selling computer game RPG series after Ultima, and Bard's Tale.)

      6. B5O - Babylon 5 Online

      7. BSGO - Battlestar Galactica Online

These are the only brand names left that already have incredible name recignition. And already have hordes of fans waiting for a MMORPG version to be made.

Out of all the upcoming mmo's I can only think of 3 that will probably be a big hit:

Dark and Light- For the sheer size and amount of gameplay unmatched by anything current or on the horizon.

Heroes Journey- Since it looks beautiful and much of the environment will be made using the aide of very skilled players, and old school Dungeon Masters.

Ragnarok Online 2-  Despite Ragnarok's unpopularity in the states, it literally has had the largest player base in the world with servers on 6 continents and 37 different countries.  Gravities world wide appeal mixed with the incredibly beautiful revamped graphics of Ragnarok Online 2 should make it popular.

Most of the other upcoming games are just reallying on a gimmick to sell them, and as any player can tell you a gimmick game isnt all that inspiring.  Although a few mmo's do look OK, like the one where you can control 3 characters at the same time.

The fact the the devs have postponed the launch, it s a good sign.

They realised how much potential the game has, and how much interest there is for this game.
They didn't want to make another Mourning.

The only problem for D&L would be to keep all its promises, I hope the devs will be able to deliver a good game.

Call me a selfish, unfair, self centered NA but...

EQ at it prime was 80% of the MMORPG online players in NA.

WoW never break 50% of the NA market and is fast on the decline.

Raw numbers are as unfair as this.

Thank you for actually answering the question that this topic was asking!
Number 2 looks pretty cool too. Hmm, All the others dont really catch my eye.
I think Diablo will come before Starcraft, World of Diablo or something, that would be pretty cool.
    Ultima 2, intresting.

and we RESPECT Blizzard for games like: Diablo, Warcraft, Starcraft

  • shaeshae Member Posts: 2,509

Certainly DnL "looks" like it may have the potential to be something, all be it what that thing is, who knows, even in my short time playing MMO's and now wanting to get into the actual gaming industry, I've seen many upon many great ideas come and go and never pan out. "cough" SWG *cough* EQ2 cough *. So I'm hesitant to think it will be the next Lineage or WoW.

I think if you're looking for anything revolutionary in the MMO world your going to be waiting untill the 2007/08 season.

STO (star trek online) will be chalk filled with viciously crazed fans but it might be a departure from the cookie cutter type MMO we seem to have so much of today.

DO (dune online) I know this game is way way way pre-production, but I think for story value and potential, this is the one I'm excited about hearing more of.

I think we're going to see alot of franchise MMO's being released, as someone mentioned, since already have a fan base to work with, it's a better sell to production companys.

Vanguard took a hit when it came out that most of its features are lifted from EQ 2.. i know it broke my heart.

The next WoW won't come for another four years or so.

First we would need other developers to innovate and offer new features, but that are sort of buggy or not quite right on the first or second or third try. Then Blizzard would have to come along again and polish them all up and slap them into one solid package.

I doubt they would shoot for as un-revolutionary and un-groundbreaking a game as they put out this time. I got bored quickly as did many of my friends. They need work on end game motivation I think. Best first game by a company new to MMOs by leaps and bounds though. Respect.

I don't want a "Next" World of warcraft, I want them to continue adding to this one till its got more features than UO!

Also Starcraft:Ghost is a FPS/stealth not an rpg.
