Are people generally this argumentative?

Never in my life have I witnessed so many people prepared to twist an innocent remark into something unintended so that they might feel momentarily superior.  It is the ultimate signature of weakness, having to bolster your own esteem via the detriment of others, but yet it is common here.  I am intrigued as to why this is, please explain?
