So Wildstar is another quest hub game? /acts shocked.

Luckily, i don't need you to like me to enjoy video games. -nariusseldon.
In F2P I think it's more a case of the game's trying to play the player's. -laserit

It sounds like Wildstar has all sorts of bells and whistles to go along with its quest hub design. Some of these are no doubt very entertaining; however, I wouldn't be surprised if most people playing the game are experiencing essentially the same thing that WoW offered ten years ago.

Well considering that's what the devs were aiming to do..

    rpg/mmorg history: Dun Darach>Bloodwych>Bards Tale 1-3>Eye of the beholder > Might and Magic 2,3,5 > FFVII> Baldur's Gate 1, 2 > Planescape Torment >Morrowind > WOW > oblivion > LOTR > Guild Wars (1900hrs elementalist) Vanguard. > GW2(1000 elementalist), Wildstar

Now playing GW2, AOW 3, ESO, LOTR, Elite D

Anyway advancing in any game is a movement in a direction whether you stand in one spot and grind mobs or complete quests you are moving in the direction of advancement of your character. You're fooling yourself if you think that there is a difference between killing random mobs that give you experience to advance over killing them for a quest.

I do not see that big draw to a world that leaves mobs that you run across and kill over ones that you search for a quest. They seem like an exercise in semantics . I am not disputing that while you progress you are ticking boxes but fantasy books that you read often have a goal and quests that you do along the way and you do them in order to achieve a goal. In games with quests the goal is often to reach the end game. How you reach there is what seems to be the difference between the games. I do not think that one way is better than the other they are just different. I also think that when you put down one method over the other you are disrespecting the player who chooses questing as an enjoyable venture.

Also I think the reason questing fails for people is because they do not read or enjoy reading and doing the quest. I enjoyed SWTOR immensely because I loved the story and yet others hated the on rails game. I think the fault of not enjoying lies with the player who does not recognize that that type of game is not to his liking. However there is nothing diminutive or less in that type of game as some here would like to have us believe .There is just different forms of playing an MMORPG.

Yes, but the mission itself was irrelevant. It was really just an excuse to make people group up and grind mobs inside the mission areas. That's not what I am talking about though. The actual quests in that game were completely different and not part of the mission system.

In any case, you write you that there is no difference between grinding mobs and grinding quests. I never really argued that there was, but rather that the older games with mob grinding progression had quests that were far more interesting than the quests found in games with a questing progression model. When everything you do has to be a quest there are going to be a lot of boring quests.

That said, I do think that in practice there is a huge difference between grinding mobs and grinding quests. The quest-based progression system is largely anti-social because the optimal way to clear out a large number of quests is usually to do it alone or with someone you already know. In games where grinding mobs for exp is optimal you'll usually find that grouping, even with strangers, is more effective than playing alone. Obviously it's not going to be a great social experience every time but it has a much better chance of being one.

As for reading the quests I find that pointless and extremely dull because I already know that the "quest" is just part of the progression system. I already know that the quest description is nothing but an excuse to make me kill 12 hyenas or deliver an item.

I read your post three times............

And still have no idea what in the hell your talking about.  Quests aren't content?  Open world is bad?  Open world is good?  Battlegrounds suck?  Your sick of something?

    I give up.

So seeing as how the open world offers absolutely nothing worthwhile to the game, it's another instance fest where you have 2 BGs total (amazing!) and some PVE stuff.

Warplots are apparently a massive zergfest. Hell, 10v10 feels like a massive zergfest. WTF devs? This trend is starting to piss me off.

You should complain about it on every forum you can find!  That'll show 'em you mean business! :)

Eh I am starting to feel that way. Open world is 80% quests. 20% events, gathering, pvp and exploring.

Its really just quest zones, there is no life to the zones at all, no action. They need to add some events, flood some enemies into a town and have us defend against a huge boss or something... there really is minimal public group activities aside from group quests that I usually solo and the occassional raid boss, that even at lvl 26 have not witnessed yet. I have so far done one public event in the corner of the first major zone and it was very anticlimactic.

Now Playing: Bless / Summoners War
Looking forward to: Crowfall / Lost Ark / Black Desert Mobile

The only thing this proves is that even when repeatedly facedesking on the pointy corner of my desk after reading the original post, I still did not get to the apparently extensive brain damage of the original poster.

This is about as useful as saying a car is useless because it drives on a road.

That's not even close to what the OP was saying. With your analogy, he was saying Wildstar is the same car as World of Warcraft but with a MP3 driven radio instead of a multi CD changer. It's new and slightly more useful, but ultimately achieves the same outcome.

OP is complaining about open world quests in a theme park MMORPG. It's very much like complaining that a car drives on a road.

As you say Wildstar isn't the same 'car' but the core thing the OP is complaining about is, as the title of this post says, questing in an open world. Which is what a themepark MMO does.

If the OP wants an MMO but doesn't do open world questing I'd advise him to play EVE.

    ...

Khm, what you say makes sense like "I'm sick of cars that need driving". Questing IS ESSENTIAL part od gaming. ESSENTIAL. Unless you want just pure pvp but not a lot of choices there.

  • prognarprognar Member Posts: 12

It's kind of ironic as this thread looks like it was made out of spite from the OP, who spent money on a game that didn't live up to their expectations.

NCSOFT was pretty clear on what the game was from the get go, they even stated that the grind was pretty much all preperation for end game.

I like how people compaire this game to stuff from the stone age, btw the people who keep saying vanilla wow 2k4 like they may have actually played it, would know vanilla wow was BROKEN, it didn't even have battle grounds on release it was slapped on like a bandaid and had no purpose for like a year, and the questing... you could clear 2 zones and maybe get a level, you GRINDED instances to level up BTW, or mobs in a zone your level.

Practically none of the mmos that have released have any point in going back to the starting zones, in all mmos you pointlessly grind stuff, if it's not a grind you enjoy, why have a phat cry about it. there are plenty of other games out there.

MMO's have pretty much degenerated to a bunch, of crybabies who seem like their only existance/ egos are fueld by stat sheets and horribly bad looking drops, to go on about their DPS, and how long their sad EPEEN is.

Has anyone noticed how game developers seem to be putting less and less effort into what end game gear looks like ?

End of the day if you don't enjoy it maybe look into finding a different more enjoyable hobbie, because the genre isn't going to change just because it doesnt cater exactly for YOU.

haha ok point taken. I wish game companies would launch alternate severs. One server with quest hubs; another server without them. They would attract a much broader base of players. A lot of people hate quest hubs.

I don't think a server with no quest hubs would attract as many people as you think. lol what would these people do? Just grind mobs or do dungeons to level instead?

Removing quest hubs in a game that relies on quest hubs...yeah, where do people get these genius ideas (you basically get worse version of EQ which was very bad to start with)

Welcome to MMOs. You quest, you level, you run dungeons/raids. That's the game. It's pretty asinine to bitch about a game's fundamental content. And yes, quests are content. They are something you do. That's what content is. You use your skills and you interact with the game.

    You bought the wrong game.

lol, I think it fits pretty good. Apparently the OP thought this themepark, over-the-top, sci-fi animated,  mmorpg would be completely different.

Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.

Worthless for what? There's a crap ton of value in the open world in WildStar.
  • DeddmeatDeddmeat Member UncommonPosts: 387

I loved UO, probably my favourite mmo, also AO, EVE

And Wildstar .. which i like because it's just a ball of FUN, I play Exile faction and the voice over when you level cracks me up, it's also a bit more social than some of the other mmo's out there.

whether that's todo with it being new or just the fun factor i don't know

And it's not as if i'm without mmo's to play, i have 2 subbed (1 runs out soon tho) & 2 lifetime subs, so whilst the Path system in WS i find a pita, the actual game i have for a 'lighter' side of gaming so to speak.

I'd recommend the Dominion if you liked the idea of depression ;-)
