Lost in the world of MMOs

Well I'm not quite sure what has inspired me to post this, but maybe it's because I am hoping to hear from others in the same boat and what they are doing to keep the MMO spark alive.

I have been playing mmos for a long time, getting my start in City of Heroes. I moved to many games with a gaming community that had it's glory days as well as struggled to survive many times but still managed to keep on going. I eventually left that community last fall after eight years and I have been wandering for quite some time. I have spent the last few years waiting for the next great mmo that wasn't WoW and could bring back the engaged mmo community. Star Wars the Old Republic and Guild Wars 2 were the greatest of disappointments when it came to the PvP experience for endgame. I watched several of my favorite mmos get shut down or die slow deaths as free to play models destroyed the player base but still managed to be justifiable by the publishers to keep on going.

With the trend of free to play, I have found myself in a weird state. There are so many mmos, seeming to offer everything yet completely lacking the satisfaction, sense of accomplishment, challenge and level of enjoyment I feel I got from games like Star Wars Galaxies and Lord of the Rings Online before it raised the level cap past 50. I fell in love with Dayz and Nether but still miss that rpg element.

I managed to wait it out for Elder Scrolls Online, but with the lack of time to actually try out the PvP in the beta and being spoiled with the free to play model held me back when I tried to justify buying the game and paying for a monthly subscription. I'm currently playing Landmark waiting for EverQuest Next to come out but I'm just so exhausted for waiting for games only to meet disappointment.

I have recently directed my attention to kick starters and as well as mmos that appear to actually be delivering a sandbox experience (I know a lot of games I have detailed thus far are not sandbox games but this is a particular interest I have always had. I have tried quite a large array of games that just wouldn’t fit very well in this post) such as ArchAge, Black Desert, City of Titans and Embers of Caerus. They all catch my attention but I can’t help but feel that the Korean developers will not care for the NA player base and that these games are going to be ages until we actually get some action.

Overall you have read my story thus far and I want to know what you guys are thinking, especially if you have felt the same. Is the mmo genre going to be so flooded, spread so thin, and continue to disappoint us or is there a game I’ve missed that doesn’t feel like a waste of time? I don’t want this thread to be completely negative so if you use to feel like this but are currently playing an mmo right now that you feel is worth the time or you believe in an upcoming mmo please let me know because I need an mmorpg-fix. I’m looking for a mmorpg that has that sense of accomplishment, provides a challenge, and with PvP that is more interesting than just battlegrounds.

Well, ever since SOE had decided to shut Vanguard down, I'm homeless in the MMORPG world. :(

No other MMO has such a great selection of classes, this well implemented.

I am also looking forward to other massive disappointments (EQN I'm looking at you).

    :P

Seriously look at ArcheAge - its not perfect but it has some solid sandpark elements, and actual depth and social systems.

There are other sandboxy games in the works - chances are one of them could turn out decent.

I agree with DMkano that you should try Archeage, it's massive pvp sandbox and you sound like you want something more then just your average themepark.

Thanks guys, I'll start looking into ArchAge more seriously. I'm going to keep on trying, guess that's all we can do.
