Some of the oldest MMORPGs are the best

The best MMORPGs are Asheron's Call and Ultima Online. The reason is simple, complexity. Newer games look better, but are simpler. If you never tried those two games, but find your current game too simple in design, try them.

Yeah Ultima Online is one of the best so much to do the content is excellent and the only game ive been playing for nearly 4 years now, people are put off by the graphics though moslty younger gamers. If they'd update the graphics id reckon they'd pull in more subs. Also dont forget Anarchy Online has been around a while now and still better than most of the "new" MMORPG's.

It's cause the newest games that are too easy and have overly informative tutorials (EQ2) are targeted at mainstream audiences, some of which have never played a MMORPG.  The hardcore and/or passionate rpg gamers are of a minority and are of least concern it would seem.  Just look at World of Warcraft.

I have to disagree.  Mainstream gamers are already used to difficult games.  Difficulty was never a baracade to entry.

Part of the problem is so many have complained about grinding, well if you take that away, many games are left with nothing.  lol  If you could get to 60 in EQ1 with just some casual gaming, it would get boring too.  Even EQ is not very diverse in its gameplay.

Another reason is that most of the revenue from a mmog product comes from the box, so I think companies just make games last about 3 months.  They don't make much from the subscriptions.  (I read that somewhere, but can't remember where - It was a long time ago)  Then the player will go buy yet another box.  More money for the companies.

Games like UO have a lot of diversity in their game play.  That's the main reason for staying power.  There are so many different things to do.  If you get bored of one, try another.  Rinse and repeat.  In these new games, if you get tired of the grind, there's nothing left to do.  Some say "what about the PvP?" to which I say "Once you've played SB pvp with all the politics and seiging, you'll understand why WoW and GW pvp is crap.  It's pointless.

Older games have ups and downs. I mean i agree that Ultima online is a great game, i played about 3 years ago but forced to quit because i was 2 addicted image  lol. but i would never start again now because its so developed that i would be the bottom of the ranks in the game and never get to the top of the game. Thats what i like about new games, if u start near beta stages you always stay on top and are one of the better players in the game.

I have more fun in a game when I'm not trying to run a rat race. I just want a game that has lots of details, choices, and complexity to keep me learning and doing all sorts of interesting things. Asheron's Call and Ultima Online still accomplish those goals best in my opinion.

Making friends and joining groups is sometimes fun, but the gameplay has to come first.

I think you have summed up exactly what is lacking in most MMORPGs.

I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.

Bah, come on now. It's not about being "the best", it's about having fun on the way there. image

Have you ever played Asheron's Call? I feel like Asheron's Call is a hair better. You can still buy a downloadable copy of AC if you are interested.
