banning practice?

Do they ban you for no reason, or is my friend over reacting?
They apparently got banned today and were not given a reason.
He says he was not doing anything that he would not do in WOW.

Anybody know what the rules are for being banned?

Was he doing anything wrong (per the EULA)?  Not doing anything he wouldn't do in WoW is a very vague statement.  Who knows what he'd do in WoW?  Buy gold from a third-party, bot, use offensive language in general chat?

At the moment they are banning RMT, botters and those suspected all at once. A lot of innocent players are getting banned as a precaution if any suspitious activity has shown on their account until evidence is reviewed. I got banned 2 days ago but after speaking to CS they said my account was probably hacked and i probably didnt realise it and they then restored my account. The whole process took about 48h to clear up. While annoying its good to see them taking positive steps to fix the problem and they caused me trouble in restoring my account status.

It may have been for language!

it appears they think the account was compromized

    Reply from the company:

    "Hello #######,

I’m sorry to hear that you have experienced this unfortunate situation. I want to assure you that we are working to take care of you as quickly as possible.

A temporary block was placed on the account because the account was identified to have been compromised. The block was intended to prevent any additional damage to the account and also to restrict the account from being used for illicit activities without your consent/knowledge. Once we have confirmed that the account is secured, the temporary block will be lifted and access to the account will be restored.

My review indicates that the most likely reason attacker was able to gain access to the account is because the email account associated with the NC account appears to be compromised. Before unblocking the account, I would like to confirm that the email account is secured so the account is not compromised again in the future.

Please read and follow the directions below to secure the account."

Seems like a good thing to me. They were attempting to protect the account, probably due to a log in from a new or different IP address or something. Does he play in the same place or from the same computer? I've seen that happen sometimes.

It is good that they are doing something, but surely they could do it with out banning players

Glad I don't play, my IP address is not fixed and changes every time I turn the modem off, so I would be banned every other day!

IP addresses have a location, just like if your account is attempted to be logged into on Facebook, it then gives you a map of where the IP address that tried logging in to your account was from. WoW does a similar thing too, if your account is comprimised sometimes they'll block the account straight off, and then you have to unlock it, which can be a gruelling process from what I've heard from my guild mates.

Glad to see that Wildstar is looking out for the players

Honestly, anyone that is banned for being compromised is asking for it.  When you setup the account, they ask you to use the 2-step verification when you log in to the game.  If one day you go to log in and the 2 step is gone, then you have much more things to worry about. LOL

It's not a ban.  It's NCsoft policy to lock an account when the login shows a different IP address from the original.  I've had this happen to me a few times after moving from one place to another.  It can be annoying but it's better than having them do nothing and the account actually be compromised and an innocent person get banned; something I've had happen twice in the past with WoW because blizzard didn't lock my account after it was logged into from an IP address that wasn't associated with my account.

It's the equivilent of a credit card company putting a freeze on a card that gets used in a state or country that its never been used in before.  Something else I've had happen after my card registered a charge from California five minutes after I used it in Delaware.

That can be a number of things.

First there's the possibility of multi-boxing (running 4 account, 4 characters with a program that allows nearly full automation sync of the other 3 to the main controlling of a primary).  Although WoW allows it, that's not allowed in this game and will get you banned.

Second guess is cursing, swearing, and general distasteful language directed at other players.  Players in WoW are kind of used to that language and don't report as often.  It's no big deal to them.  This game has a flood of new people as well as others that just don't like that kind of stuff.  If you're calling everyone a "homosexual douchebag" just because they stole your resource node or killed you in PvP, you're going to get reported and suspended/banned.

Third guess is guild recruitment spam.   Spam is spam, don't care how you think it's not.  When you're spamming your guild recruitment in every /zone and /advice channel you can, every 3-5 minutes: that's spam.  You're getting reported.  After the initial wave of gold sellers who were doing their thing, I've not gotten those in 1.5-2 weeks now, but the guild recruitment spam is what's driving me nuts in-game.

There is also linking porn pics in chat.  That's a big no-no.   Peps were doing this in TBC (last major time I stepped into WoW) and it's detestable.  So, that's another thing your friend could be doing too.

Another is trade scamming.  That's where you're telling someone that you are going to give them X gold for an item they trade you, then you give them 0 while they give you the item.  It's bannable in most every game that I'm aware of except EVE (because EVE is weird like that), so I'm not sure it was allowed in WoW either.

Here's their Rules of Conduct for you to have your friend go over and see what s/he's done.
