So they are further postponing the Beta start date to some "future time". They have to translate 70k words. How &*%(* long can it possibly take to translate 70 thousand words. Seriously. I'm asking. And who cares about the translation? It's a beta for god's sake.
In the meantime the 150 dollar alpha rolls on and on. I was pretty interested in trying this out but as they drag this on and on I get a bad feeling.

"You're either with us or against us"
This is what I'm talking about. From all reports it's fine. I really have a hard time believing that the 70k words are mission critical.
Archeage seems to have a really loose definition of alpha test. I almost shelled out the 150 but I was like "*&%( that. Why reward this behaviour? I get that it pays for the game and you are reimbursed with currency and what not. But come on... By the time they "launch" this thing the mystery and hype will be mined out.
Seeing as how Wildstar just launched my guess is that they're waiting for a sweet spot in the market to open up. Again maybe I'm just cynical.
How is Trion losing money? They are charging money to test the game. Seriously. I'm curious.
I concede. This being the case my question is why drag out the alpha?
People complain when games are released too early and people complain when they arent. /shrug.
Maybe wait one thought might be fun if longer had developed. but whats 70k words in the scheme of things. Its not like its rocket science to make translations make sense.......
They should just outsource it to Amazon mturk. That baby'll be ready by morning!
I just fail to see how a game that's been out in Korea and other places for so long can be in an "alpha" stage. They say they need to translate the language and there are references to making it more Western friendly. Just wish I knew what that entailed. Truly.
Sry DMKano, normally i agree with most of ur posts (specially about AA), but this is getting ridiculous about the way Trion is manage the release of AA in the west.
Just because they decide with xlgames about release the game with 1.2, wich i think maybe its a good think, means too that they change they inicial plans, after putting the founder pack for sale (after recive some money), i cant see this an honest move from a compnay.
Game could be release with a previous patch, and then add this one.
All this is a market decision, nothing more then that. They dont care (as all other compamny in the market) about players, they just start thinking that maybe with 1.2 patch the make a little more money then 1.0 or whatever the version was inicially planned to be release.
I didnt buy the alpha access pack, but if i would i still feel cheated about all this. Not saying Trion is cheating, they never lie to us as far as i know, but the fact is they change plans AFTER people spend money. Im sure even alpha players want a release version, and ended with test ones.
Imagine that meanwhile they decide that afterall is better release with 1.7 verson, that is soon in Korea?
At this point we could be playing a lower version of AA, and the test server been testing the 1.2 and then implemented in live servers.
Love this game, will be there as soon is possible, but Trion is starting to be annoying about all this process.
Just my 2cents.
self edit - posted while drunk - sorry folks
Fair enouph.
Man, i just want to play so bad this dam game without thinking on "wipes"...
Holy crap... somebody call Dr. Buddy Rydell!
What are your other Hobbies?
Gaming is Dirt Cheap compared to this...
Just a thought but might consider switching to decaf...?
I think the main gripe here is that "one day" may come but they are leaving a bad taste in the mouth with their current shenanigans.
IF indeed there are shenanigans afoot.
I bought into the $150 alpha. I played for a few weeks and I enjoyed it enough. I stopped playing around 3/4 of the way to max level as I didn't want to over-play/burn-out or whatever on alpha. I still watched a few streams after stopping and I feel like I've already seen enough end game to know what it's like. Perhaps I shouldn't have watched streams as now I'm not even looking forward to launch. Not because I believe end game is bad but because I feel like I've seen most everything or have a good idea about everything the game has to offer.
It sort of hit me about a month ago, I think my time playing traditional mmo's is coming to an end. I've been playing them very regular since about the year 2000 and have many great memories. It kind of sucks loosing enthusiasm about a hobby that one once completely enjoyed.
Come on man, they know people are on the fence whether or not to pay $150 for alpha now or wait for beta. They just hoped to cash in on some more alpha $$$$$. It is pretty clear as day.
Commendable? You act as though they are releasing this game as some form of good will. They are milking would be fans of this game for all they are worth, $150 access to alpha for a FREE to play game is absurd as it is, delaying beta for this lame excuse is even worse. No we do not have to buy it, and those of us complaining have already exercised that right so I don't think we really need you to tell us that.
Losing money?
They just stole 2.4 million banning 16k accounts @$150 each not exactly losing money the way I see it.
None of those accounts were paid for. They were fraudulent ones but you probably already knew that.
I wish people would stop fooking complaining about this game not being released yet. They are working with a game thats been out for a while in Korea and Russia, we all know this. Can we not just wait it out and get a polished game. Trion has to sift through numerous XL updates and decide which to keep, so they don't lose players like XL did. I think the biggest dilemma facing Trion is how to make this game work with the attitude of today's western gamers.
I would get a bad feeling if they decided to rush the game, just to get the cash shop going and start making money. Trion seems more than willing to converse with their fans and answer questions. The point of beta is to test the finished product. Rift is a decent game and I have no doubt Trion can make this work.
Let's say you are in school.
You want to be a Doctor...
You just finished High School and are now in College to study Medical.
Should we give you a Doctors Degree after Day one (Insert your impatience here) or wait until you are actually ready to become a Doctor after you learn everything you need to pass the exams 4-8 yrs later? (Insert Game polish here)

The language translation is just one small part of the delay. The rest is related to a massive update and conversion to core gameplay for the western market. The Trion people have recently spent a week in Korea thrashing out the changes needed and XL Games and Trion between them are now implementing the first stages, which will be coming to alpha next week. Further changes will be coming in another patch soon after and everything has to be tested on the alpha server before being ready to advance to the beta testing stage. That's probably going to delay the start of beta by a month or so, that's all.
People who say it's not a true alpha because the game is already released in Korea are just talking out of their backsides. The language has had to be translated not just to one language but three. That's English, French and German. That's not all though, many aspects of the game as released in Korea wouldn't appeal to a western audience so many core features have had to be adjusted and tested. The whole thing has also had to be integrated with Trion's account system, the Glyph launcher, which itself is in beta and of course their in-game cash shop, which will not be identical to the Asian one.
The latest thing that Trion has had to work into the game is a way to battle the massive recent onslaught of botters and gold sellers too. New game management tools are being introduced to testing next week.
I paid my $150 and I'm very happy with the way things have been progressing. I'd prefer they take their time and make sure the game is running as optimised as possible rather than rush it onto the market, incomplete and buggy like so many other games have been.
Posters yesterday: "Why do games always release unfinished!!!!????"
Posters today: "WHY HAVEN'T THEY ALLOWED US TO PLAY THIS ALREADY!?!!??!?"
Posters tomorrow: "WTF, this game is trash...it's unfinished and I should have never dumped my money on it...."
This is NOT a game in development. This game has already been released in other parts of the world. Simple translation and gaming tweaks do not take this long for most companies. Just confirms even more my concerns with the team (or not so much a team) over at Trion now.
I played this on the Russian server for a good bit of time. I was not impressed by it. Even now when I watch Alpha footage the game performance looks bad. I guess time will tell.
If you are that worried, buy alpha problem solved.
Call me cynical.
Which kind of explains why it's being changed for the western version doesn't it?
