The developers obviously don't know the exact numbers themselves as yet if you read what was said they are making an assumption that the numbers posted on reddit are wrong . To me its obvious that they are just covering themselves in case the numbers don't stack up to those being reported all over the internet . That is very different from debunking.
At the moment we dont have a clue what the numbers are and I suspect neither does the person who made that tweet or he would have hinted at what he thought the sales were in China . I think the time for threads such as this is after they are official sales numbes are released to the public . Then we have hard facts to go on .
As I have pointed out there is a thread in the main news section covering this . Why did foom not post there ?
Are you really trying to argue that the company itself doesnt know how many copies it's sold?
The company is the ONLY one who knows how much it has sold.
come on, man.
They may know direct download sales but they probably wouldn't know boxed sales as yet . That kind of information would take a while to get through to them .
If whoever posted this tweet had knowledge of the number of accounts created in China in the last few months why wouldn't he explain why he thinks the figures are lower and by what approximate amount . I suspect he thinks they will be lower but doesn't know by how much . He may have very good reason to think they are lower than forecast but then again can any of you be a hundred percent certain this is not just a bit of damage limitation from someone who isn't sure of the exact figures as yet ?
My point is the OP could not wait to start this thread he could have posted in the news story that covers this subject but he did not. For whatever reason he jumped in as a soon as he could with what he saw as bad news for GW2 . I don't like people like that . Too much negativity from many too many gamers on this website who want to see games they don't like to play do badly .
I will be interested in seeing what the official numbers are when they come out and if they are close to the 3.8 million estimated sales posted on reddit .
So basically you think Arenanet are lying when they say they haven't sold 3.8 million in china, interesting that you would rather believe some random poster on reddit with no accountability and a rather dodgy source to boot, than the one source that you would think, actually knows what they are talking about.
If they don't have the numbers as yet its not exactly lying is it . Lowering expectations is not lying . I also didn't say I believe the reddit numbers . I'll believe the official numbers when they come out . If you ask me I would think the sales probably are between 2-3 million but I'm not going to come on here and make a big deal about it being lower than the 3.8 million just because of a tweet .
I may have commented about it in the new section under the story about GW2 sales but I certainly wouldn't have started a thread about it just because I wasn't keen on a game myself .
I have no doubt that the game has done well in China, and will continue to do well outside of China too, its just a shame that some random guy on Reddit is playing it a little fast and loose with the facts and causing arguments because of it, though i suspect that is probably situation normal for Reddit

My only real beef is with the journalistic integrity of this site. Most people who are familiar with my posts know I think mmorpg.com needs a managing editor (a real one). Because most of their articles go unchecked and typically incite needless fighting among the community.

For clarification.
ArenaNet did not say they haven't sold 3.8 million in China yet or at all.
They explained the news report is inaccurate and the souce does not even make reliable measures to gauge sales. They did not make any statement about the very number it self.
The Chinese sales are still open to range anywhere from 0.5 Million to anything higher.
So basically anyone saying "ArenaNet debunked the 3.8 Million sales in China" number now and crying or starting a feigned act about objectivity and accuracy of other news is quite hypocritical because ANet debunked the report and source, not any figure.
Wow you are having a hard time dealing with this. They stated that it is inaccurate. Inaccurate means that it is not correct. When you state that a report is "inaccurate," it means that the figures provided were not right. They also stated that "they could be estimating characters." Common sense dictates that the number of characters made is greater than the number of accounts. Since they assumed that the site used this logic, this means that the number reported is higher than the actual number of accounts. The only people that know how many accounts is ArenaNet, and the only thing they confirmed is that it is lower than 3.8 million. Nobody is claiming that they are being disingenuous.
It is sad that so many news organizations jumped on this like they did. Anybody using reddit as source for their information outside of official posts on the site from the developers is not good journalism. Journalism is not about simply asserting something is true (or not). It is about following particular methods to verify the truth (or falsity) of information. These methods are the core of "objectivity" in journalism. Again, it's not about the journalist (an unavoidably subjective human being, as we all are). It is about the ways in which the journalist goes about gathering, organizing and disseminating information.

Its a troll you deal with.
Iselin: And the next person who says "but it's a business, they need to make money" can just go fuck yourself.
A lot of pseudo-journalistic/ glorified blog sites posted some nonsense based on a poor translation from a Chinese fan site. None of these 'journalists' verified the source or advised their loyal readers that they had not verified the source.
The developer of the game confirmed that the 3.8m figure was "inaccurate, from a Chinese fansite, and they could be estimating characters"
A few GW2 fans continued to argue over the validity of the figure.
The mind boggles sometimes. What a mess from start to finish.

How convenient of you to miss the parts where the poster didn't actually mistranslate but missunderstood the correct translation from a Chinese fansite repoting the figures as player instead of tracked character, while GW2 hater mistranslated into "created characters" which is still a lie even when the much later exposed original source of the figures clearly meant character.
How convenient to paraphrase what the developer of the game actually said. Like the fact they they said report is innaccurate and never confirmed anything about any number other than impyling the method to gauge the numbers was not sufficient.
Its almost like you want to fabricate a dishonest twisted narrative of actual events.

When you create a site that is more about the public forums than it is about actual news, there is no need for a managing editor because it is the visitors that are making all the news. You can get any piece of information posted in the "official" news portion on this site from one of a hundred other places... some that do nothing but post news and DON'T make it a point to have forum posters on the front page. This site hides nothing about their true motives... to sell advertising and to give you a place to talk about basically whatever with a side sprinkling of gaming news here and there to help spark a new discussion about whatever.

They stated that the report is inaccurate. Not "it" by which you try to suggest he figure of sales. How dare I put the facts straight? I know bashing GW2 is not as easy without the convenient twist and a lie here and there and you "have hard time" dealing with anyone exposing it.
The thing that's inaccurate is the sales news...the sales news is the 3.8 mil number....the number is inaccurate....the mention of their "method" (estimting charecters) is ANet issuing a probable justification as to why the fansite gave an inaccurate number.........implying anything else is just 100% dishonesty on your part.
I know you argued with quite a few people who were debunking this from the begining (myself included), but you are fighting a losing battle, and one that ANeet doesn't even have your back on.

ANet: "Recent news of GW2 China sales" =/= GW2 hater: "The GW2 sales figure are less than the figure stated"
I know you want to twist you embarrasing act into a "won argument" against something I never argued against.
Why no heed you own words and let it ..oh wait wasting words onm ignorance again.
I have never said enything other than 3.8 mil was inaccurate, I never said it was lower, or higher.....with that said though now....Anet saying the number is innacurate because the fansite possibly estimated charecters (something that would only inflate the number), is def proof that their sales could be higher than 3.8 mil according to you......and I'm the ignorant one?....:/
In any event, its evident that you are grasping at anything you could possibly think of at this point to save face. I think it would do us all good to just ignore your crazy replies from now on.

Thats cool because I never said that you just said it (this keeps repeating) because I was talking with a different person until you quoted me (unless you are all the same person on multiple account, then pardon my missunderstandings) and you pretend I incorrectly presented the actual original argument because of your opinions and stretch on the actual comments aka "grasping for straws".
You realise that Anet saying the number was inaccurate because 17131.com possibly estimated charecters, something that would only inflate the number, flies in the face of everything, every attack, every insult you have hurled at everyone thus far, right?
Well those who said: "Let's wait for official and confirmed numbers rather than trusting some Chinese site." were absolutely right then.
At least Anet is making official stands like this, unlike some other companies.
Actually the chinese site isn't the one to blame here, all it listed was character numbers for each server. It was on reddit that it suddenly became 3.8M sales.
Its not like it makes any real difference. Reprinting random things from dubious sources as news is bad regardless.
I never go to Reddit, bunch of hipsters... /shrug

Just so we are both on the same page.
You are wasting your time. I think that perhaps English is not Sukiyaki's first language. Logic dictates the point you just made: there have been less than 3.8 million sales. The only way that it could be more than 3.8 million would be if there were a whole lot of Chinese people who bought the game and did not yet make a character. Not really something someone would rationally consider as plausible.

You realize Anet was saying this and I am only argueing about this, not just the conclusions from your or anyones paraphrased variants:
"We’d like to clarify recent news of GW2 China sales: it’s inaccurate, from a Chinese fansite, and they could be estimating characters."
The thing you just quoted earlier. You don't seem to be on the same page from one post to the other.
The way you try to argue and weasel around the hard facts while pretending to rely on them, is just a repetition of the whole "the article said its characters" argument. Making up BS to prove a point. It doesn't matter if the point is true its still BS. Still waiting for that line in the Chinese article where it said "created characters" or anything alike that has been "mistranslated". And I said article not the stats for character you found later.
"they could be estimating characters." Anet said that.....the ONLY reason Anet would have stated that, is if the reported number (3.8 million) is higher than the actual. No sane person would conclude that possibly estimating charecters would result in a lower number than copies sold.
Are you saying that my conclusion is wrong, biased, and because I am a hater?
I should have taken my own advice and stopped responding, but the hole you dug for yourself over the course of 3 threads now is so big, that I am actually having fun debating you with Anet on my side...

If they bought the game and haven't made a charecter yet, that would mean that they are not yet attached to a server, therefore would not appear in a server breakdown census (the source of all of this).....but we are just desperate haters tho, right? lol.

This site hides nothing about their true motives... to sell advertising and to give you a place to talk about basically whatever with a side sprinkling of gaming news here and there to help spark a new discussion about whatever.
Their EXACT wording is:
"We’d like to clarify recent news of GW2 China sales: it’s inaccurate, from a Chinese fansite, and they could be estimating characters."
Do yourself a favor an just let it go.
You realise that Anet saying the number was inaccurate because 17131.com possibly estimated charecters, something that would only inflate the number, flies in the face of everything, every attack, every insult you have hurled at everyone thus far, right?
Just so we are both on the same page.
I never go to Reddit, bunch of hipsters... /shrug

If they bought the game and haven't made a charecter yet, that would mean that they are not yet attached to a server, therefore would not appear in a server breakdown census (the source of all of this).....but we are just desperate haters tho, right? lol.
Maybe they made a character and then deleted it. You did not take that into account. You have to cover all bases you know......lol
