ArchAge or Swordsman, good or bad whats the difference ?

Well, one is good and the other is bad?

    Seriously, this reeeeeaaaaaalllllly bothers you.

That you can't play in "Alpha".

You can play when the game gets released and pay a sub if you want property.

Nothing is going to be taken away from you.

Please go look up the cost of the software to make a game, if you feel this way, please research the cost of making a game. If you need to pay good programmers expect to pay 70k - 150k, each person for a good one.  that's FOR one programmer. Imagine when you have about 50 of them...

And that's not the total cost. There is the company's contribution to retirement, the company's contribution to health benefits, figuring in training, figuring in recruitment costs, etc.

I get the feeling that some people on this site don't have jobs, are self employed or think that video games are still made in people's basements on their own time and dime.

I personally have no problem paying $150 for a new 'epic' game if that money prooves to make a better game. For me the jury is still out on that for ArcheAge but to be fair it does contain every feature a major MMO has AND THEN MORE...so one can make a good case that what you are really getting is a base game plus major expansions.

Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

Please do not respond to me

  • Oh, I understand the premise here. People are realizing that they can't pony up so they feel bad.

I didn't understand the context of this whole thing until people in this thread starting making it personal.

Heh its whatever. If they don't deserve the quality entertainment they won't get it...their goose is already cooked and they trying to splash the water and make us all wet.

Its still amusing to read that people think its a free to play mmo.
Damn are you guys in for a rough ass whooping come launch :)
Its a subscription based mmo with a free to play restricted acces.

And the 150 alpha is totaly worth it, the Alpha / Omega servers become the test servers for future builds to be tested.
    No character wipes either !
So you just bought a life time early acces to new patches also !!

    Kinda neat from Trion !

    But haters gonne hate o/

And that's the thing, this "$150" is for people who know that this is the game for them, they want to get in at the start to stress the servers, submit bug reports, etc, and will reap the benefits of having pre-paid for several months of subscription and "credits".

For everyone else they can start the game when it launches and play without paying a dime if they think that works for them.

OP the thing is that 150$ for you could be a lot but for others not. Also if you pay 150$ for something and have lots of fun with it then it is a good investment.

Those people i am sure they had tested it on the russian version or even had a sea account to test it before it was release over here. So they knew in what they where getting into.

Now the software, lets start 3DS Max, or Maya, or both 5k each... Photoshop, we will be cheap and use the cloud 20 bucks per month , per user, yes I know there is a team license .  A little cheaper, I have one.    The game engine, per seat. Server costs. Each program, you need to use, or have someone make.. They nickel and dime you.. Terrain sculpting tools, Zbrush 800 bucks per user, Mudbox 800 per user...   Over head and rent for a building...  These are some basic needs to run a company to make a game...  You have to license your company... You have taxes to pay, so again, were do you think they are pocketing money here???

I went from a big company to now, running my own game development company, I can tell you the costs rack up... Some games, you don't get your return, I already had that happen with one of our games... We lost money.... So please research before you assume this./

    /cheers.

you are right up to a point, your case is highly dependent on what kind of game you are making, how the market is for that kind of game, whether your game is different enough from the herd.   i don't think you can compare trion to say a small developer just starting out though, trion shouldn't be taking hits from software costs.

depending on where you live you can also make up for those costs, i don't know where you live but in the US most of those costs can be written off as business expenses and depending on where you are in the USthose taxes can be written off entirely such as where i live, kansas.  if you are an LLC in kansas, you don't have to pay state taxes.   there are so many ways for companies to reduce costs, its almost absurd, i'd say absurd to the point of hurting the state and country.

of course that takes a lot of work to figure out, at least in the US, with the maze of messed up tax code we have, but if you know it or have someone who does, it's not as dire as it seems.

guess that is why game designers don't run game companies anymore, because you need to know these things.  also those who get degrees in business accept the social darwinism inherent in running a business, while those who don't, well struggle with it.

this alpha sale thing is social darwinism at it's finest, companies look for anything to keep them going, even exploitative ways to make more money.  i consider this an awful idea, mostly because it's just feeding off the enthusiasm of a player base you want to buy the game, for a few more bucks in the short term while possibly harming you and the player base in the long term.  then again if this crap fails that is social darwinism as well,  and trion just got filtered out.

Do they talk about the other 200 Asian games not charging $150 ?

and what's your point? Leaving aside that most Asian games are garbage; who is forcing you to pay 250$ for an alpha access. Wait for release.

Thats funny.  I kind of do the same mental checklist for american games.

Like if there was a new game with a big IP named say, Old Scroll Online coming out i'd be like.

Old Scroll Online is a game made by western developers.

Old Scroll Online is in the US

Old Scroll Online is a western game

Old Scroll Online is a generic cashgrab MMO

    Old Scroll Online is garbage

I'm not trying to bash any game in particular.  But if someone doesn't notice how stale the western market has become with all the "me too" games, they haven't been paying attention the past decade.  The only innovative games we get are by super low budget developers that don't really have the funds or skill to build their vision properly.

At least games from eastern developers are doing new and different things.  The asian market has its issues and asian developers do tend to do things that drive me crazy.  But I can't pretend for a second that we've been doing things any better here in the west.
