I have never understood the bad combat argument. It is just fine. You want bad combat? Did any of you play the ArcheAge beta last weekend? Now that is an example of bad....
The combat is fine and complex If you get to the end game raid and stuff... Animations could be better though. IMO this is the only themepark MMO worth playing nowadays because you have all good things in 1 package. Best dungeons, story, quests, immersion, community. The combat that so many people claim to be clunky, is so much better than the big WoW, for exemple, and nobody complain about WoW combat of just spamming the same button during all leveling process. It could be better, yes, like GW2 and Tera, but how many MMOs out there have good combat AND animations? And honestly, I prefer TSW with its "clunky" (in the eyes of some) combat and great in everything else than GW2 perfect combat/animations and lacking in all the other aspects.
I think TSW biggest problem is not only the combat, but the real life feel of the game since a lot of people say that they prefer Fantasy MMOs. Its a matter of taste and the devs knew the game wouldnt be for everyone. I am fed up of Orcs, Elfs and Dwarfs...
Back to the topic, I RP myself in the game too, and since my cabal has a lot of RP events I think its easier for me not to try to be something different. I always carry my sword and big demonic hammer in the back and I wouldnt chicken If I was to leave in TSW world. I would propably be an investigator and try to solve all mysteries and get lores (like my character now). The thing I would love is an Aghata system to travel the world. So great!

You gain skills and points by fighting and not roll play alone. So fighting is a major point of the game.

I'm not sure I can really play anything BUT myself. In TSW, MXO, COH, etc. I always end up making a toon that has powers I could see having and acting as I would in the game. TSW and MXO were easier since I didn't have to have a bunch of alts to feed how I felt that day because of the ability to switch everything out. The one HUGE difference between my pixels and me is in the looks department -- there is no way in hell I am going to work out enough to look like that! As a matter of fact I'm pretty sure it's a physical impossibility....
I once roleplayed a character in CoH similar to myself. After obtaining his powers he actually went to the superhero outfitter shop and his best friend helped him design his costume and pick a name etc. It was kinda neat to roleplay being one of the many superheroes in that city and the hero registration costuming all that fun stuff rather than something a little more outside the actual in game mechanics.
My characters in rp settings end up being weak, broken things who have been dropped into the strange story of the world. TSW being my first real attempt on playing a MMO RP doesn't seem to be different.
Maybe I do this because godlike Mr. Universe types just do not create the tension for proper drama, where as a weak, timid boy with unnatural powers seems to cut the part more easily. And if that is not enough, add a mental or physical problem or two and you have enough material to RP even by yourself... (he said, jokingly)
What comes to TSW combat being clunky: IMO TSW is not about combat as much as the setting, stories and great atmosphere. The storytelling in the game is unseen in any other MMO and the great part of it is that it works both solo and in groups.
I played through closed and open Beta, and quit then. Now I started again, only cursing myself for not sticking with the game! The reason I was kind of put off was actually the strange, open character development system with no guidance how to proceed. There were no suggested builds, you had to come up with the combinations by yourself. But the stories... They haunted me ever since the first weekend.
So to the original question: I wouldn't want to play myself. I'm too 'normal' and boring. Broken, yes, but not in a way a hero in a tragedy should be. But of course, each and every character (written or played) contains bits and pieces of yourself in them, so who's to say?
easily the best MMO open now.. like someone said its not going to make me take days off like DaOC did -GOD DaOC was great-but the settings the story/mission stories are the best in an MMO today nothing comes close. I DO agree the combat is clunky most if not all MMO's have similar combat
I think it's funny how a thread about people being themselves in the game and then asking if people do ended up being a discussion on how much people don't like the game. If you don't like it, DON'T PLAY! and definitely DON'T post on a page talking about the game that you don't like.
Now to the point, yes I do in a way play myself in the game. My character has a back story and personality similar to mine and even uses the weapons that I would given the situation. My character even looks and dresses similar to me. I think MMOs where people can choose human, tend to either make avatars that look like them or how they WISHED that they looked.
Originally posted by strawhat0981 For me it is the animations, they just look kind of weird. I can not really put my finger on it. Why do you think we want shooter or "action combat" just because we feel the combat is not very good? It is not like we are the first people to say this, a lot of people have the same feelings about the combat.
Well, I can't speak for anyone else, but to me, I've come to feel that saying "the combat sucks" in TSW seems to be the "go-to" complaint for anyone who doesn't like the game (or they just say "it's Funcom, so it's fail automatically" - which is even worse; they haven't even played the game, but yet feel qualified to give an opinion? Please.). If I've seen 100 people use that specific reason for "not liking the game", only 5 at most, have ever elaborated on exactly what they didn't like about it.
When asked what specifically they don't like about it, many become defensive and start throwing strawmen around, indignantly asking "why do I have to explain that? I just don't like it, okay?", or "are you saying the combat is awesome?". They respond to the question without ever answering it.
If I (or others) ask them specific questions, about their build, what synergies were they working with, what weapons, etc. etc. they continue to become irate and defensive.
It just seems to me that saying "combat sucks" in TSW, is in the same category as saying "the graphics are too cartoony" in WoW, or "it's just spreadsheets in space" is the standard complaint about Eve Online. They aren't really saying anything. They're just regurgitating what others say, and tend to sound more like drones repeating what they've heard, than individuals with actual informed opinions.
It's like a bunch of people eating at a restaurant, and just complaining "their burgers suck". Okay, well, what sucks about them? Is it the meat? Do they over/undercook them? Are their ingredients not fresh? The rolls too hard or not hard enough? How did it fail to meet your expectations/satisfaction?
It sucks" is not really a very helpful response. It's a passive, "me-too" type response.
That's my issue with people repeating "canned arguments" like that. There's nowhere to go with that, conversation-wise, especially when people refuse to elaborate even when asked.
Some time back, a guy was complaining about TSW, saying how it sucked. I asked him, out of curiosity, and want of conversation, specifically what he didn't like. He immediately became this hostile, obnoxious person, attacking me personally, throwing strawmen and ad hominems around at a breakneck rate... simply because I was asking him to elaborate and give examples of his issues with the game. It got to the point that I believe his account was banned; suddenly his name showed up as "deleted".
He's the most extreme one I've ever dealt with, but certainly not the only one to ever become defensive when asked to elaborate.
Taking it in-game, I've seen people complaining about how much the combat sucks, meanwhile, I'm watching them fight stuff, and they're literally doing nothing but spamming their builder.. literally pressing 1,1,1,1,1,1,1... I attempted to help one of them by explaining the reason they were having difficulty is because they weren't taking full advantage of the game's system, and attempted to explain at least the basics of the whole synergy/builder-finisher thing. They gave me an attitude, called me a fanboy and said I was being bitchy because someone didn't like my game... Then they continued to complain out loud about how much it sucked. I mean, really? The combat didn't suck in that situation. They sucked at combat.
I'd seen many more people doing the same thing, maybe throwing in a finisher once in a while. Their keypresses looked more like 1,1,1,1,1,2,1,1,1,1,2,1,1,1. Again, that's not the combat sucking. It's the player. After being berated for trying to help someone the first time, I just kept my mouth shut.
So, yeah.. when I see people say "TSW's combat sucks", I take it with an extreme pinch of salt, because they're not really telling me anything useful or informative. They're just repeating the "go-to" complaint for this particular game.
Originally posted by aliven I think it is because they want combat from GW2 or Tera, or some arcade game.
TSW wishes it had combat as good as Tera and Tera wishes it had as good a storyline as TSW. When I was in the beta for TSW I constantly said to myself this is one of these peanut butter // chocolate things. If only they could get the two together, they would have something.
TSW did have a somewhat better feel in beta actually. The mistake they made there was in reducing the jump height of characters. Combat in TSW always felt weak, but at least then things were so much less linear. A lot of the singular openings to areas instead had jumpable fences so you could get in anywhere along a line. This reduced a lot of the tedium, and gave your character a bit more heroic feeling.

I was going to ask if you were new here, but either you are really new here, or you're posting on an alt account. Just in case you really are new here, talking about why we don't like games is one of the main reasons these forums are as busy as they are. "Everything wrong with MMORPGs" sums it up nicely.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
guys guys guys. so all you do is stand and party online. In TSW. the game for the next 5 years to come. I know now why I cant find groups to do lairs. did you know how much time the spent to give you quality experience. which means for me gustav okpu, I had to beat the gatekeeper 3 times. clean and uncut. solo. hmm. the community indeed. 2 fist heals and transfuse and abuse oh and dont forget to HF. busy smoking 3 joints a day, 3 flasks of wine, kebaps in my face and some hardcore underworld. they said germany in 1900, 1930 they called it NEO TOKYO which in my heart it still is. Anyway I loooove canada. And oh now I have another secret ...
I play a guy that looks just like me. Goes by one of my better known aliases, and is a preacher for the Templars. Pretty much I play myself. I walk around with a sword in one hand and a bible strapped across my back. I generally dress in Dark Colors unless I am at the base where I always wear my Templar uniform.
What's nice, also, about being a preacher is that my daughter also plays. She's a Dragon. But when she refers to me as "Padre" no one really understands that its what she really calls me in real life. So that's about as real as it gets.

lifetime sub (buyin/membership, not sub, sub means recurring payments) is the stupidest thing ever
might as well put up a sign that says 'dead game here'
what further incentive do they have to keep you interested?
