Why is the game so expensive to buy?

mark2123mark2123 Member UncommonPosts: 450

With all the negativity about the game and poor reviews, I'm turned off by the UK price of £49.99 to play it even without the subscription.

If they want people to come knocking, how about a standard price to buy an MMO?

Look around, and you'll find it much cheaper. For example, only £9.99 delivered here: http://www.base.com/buy/product/the-elder-scrolls-online-including-explorers-pack-pc/dgc-esonpc.htm

    £15.99 here for a digital copy: https://www.gamekeysnow.com/keys/The-Elder-Scrolls-Online

Don't believe everything you read on the internets. A small amount of people can make a bunch of noise.

Try Steam, I think they still have a sale going on.

They are selling a standard MMO at the standard price, whether that will be a good value will depend on what you are looking for.

To OP, look for a sale at a legitimate store if you want it cheaper.

Paid mmos dont really come with a free month. If you pay $50 for an mmo, the game actually costed $35 and you paid the first month in advance, making it $50. So its still not a bad deal (assuming ZoS fixed the game already)

Basically just look for a cd key .. the prices change often enough on all the various sites. Don't bother with the official site or Steam as you ca often get cheaper deals via a cd key site or if you see a cheap boxed copy if you prefer that.

You'd certainly get substantial value out of this game.  There are ~300 hours of voice-acted quests in the game, and if you enjoyed the single player ES games you are very likely to enjoy ESO.  (I've played the ES series since Daggerfall, and I find this to be very much an ES game.  I'm also not a literalist who started the series with Skyrim and thinks that everything in Skyrim has to be in a game to make it Elder Scrolls, and that the previous entries in the series didn't exist.)

At this point the game play is extremely smooth - glitches in the questing and the like are extremely rare; the megaserver technology means that you encounter a very busy world wherever you go.  They're actively patching and expanding the game, which is what things like the sub fee are paying for.  Approach it in the spirit that it's designed - listen to the voice acting, role play, and so on - and you'll have a lot of fun.  The PvP is also a blast, but that's not my primary thing in game.

Actually where I am, Elder Scrolls Online as compared to Wildstar and World of Warcraft is alot cheaper than the both of them (atleast in Australia). At all three at full price, however Final Fantasy 14 is cheaper than all three.

But they all sport a $15 sub fee.

I have always wondered why MMOs with monthly fees are as expansive as regular games though, their main incomes are the monthly fees and it would make more sense to just take 20 bucks to buy the game (the first months fee and a few bucks for the CD or download) since it would probably give them a lot more players.

But that isn't ESOs fault in particular, all P2P MMOs (or close) do the same.

Words mean things. You may like ESO or not, but 'cash grab' usually means spending little money on a quick disposable product. ESO was not cheap to make and a MMO relies on retention. Sometimes it seems as if people just use words without regard to their meaning....

Good point. ESO was in the making for like 5 years....

I think the game is worth every penny - but as most people don't really care about time and quality as much as money, I think it might have been better for the game if it had been cheaper.
