Housing/Farm Areas

I was wondering how house and farm placement is handled in this game. For instance, on the higher level island, are you able to place houses/farms anywhere in the world where terrain allows it? Or are there specific farm/house plots or areas?

They have specific areas. Some will allow for a few types of house/farms others allow for only one type.
