What Keeps You Playing an MMO?

AlBQuirkyAlBQuirky Member EpicPosts: 7,432

Is it:
- The content?
- The people you meet?
- The updates and their frequency?
- The Combat?
- The non-combat activities?
- The Questing?
- The Story?
- The Challenge or Ease of it?
- The Freedom?
- A combination of any of the above?
- Something Else?

I realize it depends on the game and how it implements its elements or features, but generally speaking, what keeps you logging in night after night?

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

    generally speaking,

Story, huge worlds, freedom, variety of classes, replayability with different classes and races through different content, variety of content, freedom, combat.

Also, the community, but that has been one of the weakest points in the last few years of mmos since now everything is singleplayer with chatbox.

EDIT: i also like non combat activities, but i dont tend to spend much time doing them.

For me, I would say class versatility and various things to do/alternative ways to level. Rift fits this bill for me but at the same time, the game reminds me so much of wow that it just makes me want to play wow instead of invest my time fully into rift. I know the class system is a bit different than wow but everything else is the exact same minus the flying, which was one of the main reasons why I played wow anyway. If they honestly added flying, I wouldn't have a reason to play wow ever.

Anyway, I just bounce around a lot of free games to see what I haven't tried or havent played in a while, while debating on if I want to start paying a sub again or not. Probably will try out SWTOR tomorrow and/or firefall while waiting on archeage cbt.

Obviously there's a range of factors. Most however come into play earlier for me. If a game doesn't have what I want then I won't play it at all beyond eg. a free trial.

Looking at the games I subscribed for the longest, in each I was in a really good guild. So I think that's important.

They also had (for my tastes) better combat and less repetitive ongoing gameplay.

Good response and it shows my narrow mind. Fixing the OP the show a multiple of things :)

Speaking in broad terms, can the MMO entertain me for hours on end. I like a lot of things from story to atmosphere to exploring to gameplay to minigames to many, many things too numerous to list here. Can the game offer me a wide variety of activities to keep me chugging away? I am disabled and not very good at games. I do have more time on my hands than most people however. This probably results in my answer to the question being quite different from those of other posters. I require something to while away the time during which I can still listen to audio books and podcasts.

    The people i meet .

What keep a player playing a multiplayer game are other players who play with him .

Without other player to play with , multiplayer game become worst than singleplayer.

If you ask me what's wrong with nowadays MMORPG , my answer is they weren't good multiplayer game.

Too heavy on campaign and have bad multiplayer design .

I enjoy them as singleplayer game , but they are no good as multiplayer game .

Ironic , massively multiplayer game , but most of the game are singleplayer campaign.

Lately i give up on MMORPG ,

the old games bend they way too much to match the mass , new game wasn't good multiplayer .

There are some good games but not my taste .

I fall in stage that can't back to the old or move to the new.

Innovation (has something no other game has).  No lag.  No borked issues (broken quests or dungeons they never get around to fixing).  Not a WoW clone (except dwarves and elves will always be great).  Plays on my old crappy PC (I would buy a gaming computer if someone would make me one).  Fantasy immersion.  Individuality (complex char creation).  Bragging rights (goals only I and I alone can achieve then flaunt in everyone else's face and make them jealous).  No world pvp or forced arena pvp unless I can shapeshift or turn invisible and truly GET AWAY from my enemy (no spells that when you are hit get removed).  Good forums and customer relations (if I bitch or ask for new content I want my voice heard and I don't want some high and mighty moderator banning my account because I referenced another mmo's game play style).  Good market and dungeon rewards.  Crafting that is useful and NOT BORING.  Impressive housing that doesn't take more than a month to acquire and furnish.  Farmland, crops, pets, breeding, skinning, tanning.  No gold sellers in chat.

The game can be crap, it's the community and friends I make along the way that keep me playing it. Provided I can even play it.

    Community, immersion, exploration, game mechanics.

if i dont enjoy the combat i will defenitely not enjoy the game no matter how cool it looks..

other than that being able to customize my character as much as possible is very important aswell.. if i cant make it look "cool" i'll most likely have a hard time getting into the game.

I had fun once, it was terrible.

Community, friends playing, gear/achievements, levels/alternate advancement, good end game content NOT based on the standard 20 man raid nonsense from yesteryear.

    Currently Playing: ESO and FFXIV
    Have played: You name it
If you mention rose tinted glasses, you better be referring to Mitch Hedberg.

    - armor progression

    - story progression

    - area progression

ost games i quit once i reach max level and the gane falls stale

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

    The unknown.

Once I know everything (mechanics, spells, skills, locations, crafting recipes, quests, story) I leave out of boredom. I have yet to find an MMO which keeps me motivated due to its content or combat system.

    1. Good story(need to be immersed)
    2. Content (can't have a lack of content or things to do, gets boring pretty fast)
    3. Leveling Ease (need some challenge to get to the highest level, don't want to level in under a week)
    4. End game (at end game, have lots to do)
    5. Replayability (DO I want to replay the game with a different character, different story line and set of skills)

Good PvE until max level and then a variet of PvP options is what keeps me playing. If a game doesn't have PvP then I'm done when I hit max level. Best games for me are games like Guild Wars 2 where you have several PvP options + PvE content gets added every so often to go waste a little time and take a break from PvP.

The main thing that keeps me playing an MMO is when I have a long-term goal within the game.  Collecting, pet breeding, and crafting artistic things like a customized house or a sculpture are goals that will keep me going for a long time.  Achievements like soloing every dungeon once or saving up money to buy a particular mount or costume will keep me going for a moderate amount of time.  Quests keep me going at the beginning when I don't have any big goals yet and in between big goals.
I want to help design and develop a PvE-focused, solo-friendly, sandpark MMO which combines crafting, monster hunting, and story.  So PM me if you are starting one.

That's pretty much me, also. The games I have played for a long period (EQ1, CoH, WoW, and Wizard101 the first time) I did because of the other players I met and befriended. Without them, I am just some pixels running about, beating the game. Without other players (in a cooperative mode), making a connection with my avatar is much harder.

The other thing that keeps me is the investment I make with my character. If *my* skills take precedence, I am disconnected from my character. It is not him playing, but me.

my main criteria would be the community and the customer service.  Even though I played not so good looking games but if the community is great as well as the customer service, it would be worth staying in the game.
  • GruugGruug Member RarePosts: 1,794

For me (in no particular order):

    • content
    • story
    • non-repetitive things to do at "end game"
    • MEANINGFUL pvp (something I have not seen in any current/recent MMO's)
    • crafting that is worth doing (not just a time sink)
    • ability to play in a group OR alone

Let's party like it is 1863!

Atmosphere, immersion and gameplay/combat. I love theme park MMOs like Lotro and World of Warcraft. Both have great atmosphere and lore, and lots of interesting sights and vistas to see and exlore.
